WARNING: This video contains scenes of vomiting. This video is NOT for the faint of heart. The Fortress is a sandstone tower I have been yearning to summit. I spent years studying maps, researching, closely looking at google earth, and gazing at the butte from nearby summits. Well, the day is finally here. Watch as Michael and I yet again embark on an almost impossible mission traversing the entirety of Bear Mountain, reaching The Fortress, and then the climb to the summit. Not to mention the downclimb and the atrocious descent of Blight Canyon to Hartwell Canyon and safety, but not before heat exhaustion catches up with me...
Side note: This is the hardest thing Michael and I have ever done in Sedona... so far...

Awesome peak bagging. That vomit shot should increase the views. lol. I know the feeling. What do you guys drink on these hikes? Back in the day, I switched to Gatorade which helped me a lot and I did that thing that you do with the ice so that I'd have something cold to drink for most of the way. But, I started doing this thing that some old timers in the Sierra Club mentioned with the wet bandana around the neck and, for some hikes where I knew it would be pretty hot, I'd pack a wet cotton shirt in a gallon ziplock. Even in hot temps like Death Valley or Mojave in the summer), putting on that wet shirt really made us shiver but brought down the body temp a lot temporarily.

Thank you! Thats a great idea with the shirt. I might have to try that. We both drink Sedona spring water. I take electrolyte powder with me as well.

@@codiacstudios Hell yeah man, good stuff. And it's a trip seeing those old classico jars, damn did I eat a lot of spaghetti in those days ;). Nowadays they're mostly going up in the Reef. Far as the other ones in Sedona go I don't have my records right now, but I'd think they'd be up on the hard ones, like Toroweap, 6510, the Lost mountains, etc... what are you headed for next?

@@codiacstudios So you've done South Lost already? Did you come up between the two Lost Mountains? I did North by climbing the NE face, but I really wouldn't recommend that way... a lot of loose, low 5th class over several hundred feet of nothing. Toroweap I came up that gully on the W face.

Great Video! I thought for certain that you guys would descend down the spine on the west side of the Fortress as it appears to be a little less severe, but the more I look at, the more I'm doubting that it would have been easier. Awesome job guys!

Badass you made it! Years ago i ended up in hospital after training in 115f. I now carry pedalite and or live iv. I make sure it has sugar in the pouch. I also carry a small cowboy scarf. Then dunk it in puddles and tie it around your kneck. Works awesome! And you're out of shape? What the heck i am out of shape! You guys kicked some serious butt there!

Really excellent documentary of your ascent and the cinematography was superb. It’s usually the epic scenery on your climbs that’s so captivating, but on this one it was equally yours and Michael’s surmounting your exhaustion and the monumental obstacles of the climb that was engrossing and personally involving. Thank you for taking us along with you and showing you two overcoming your limits and experiencing the joy of reaching the summit. Amazing all around!

You haven't made a video for a while. Hope you're doing well. I just got back from a peak bag yesterday. Trigged a small avalanche I narrowly escaped. It was a mere mortal peak though... anybody could really do it. Not like "The Fortress"! Hopefully you're still getting some hiking in. Looking forward to your next video!

I know I haven't made a video in a while and I apologize for this. I have just been so busy with unfortunate obligations. I am disappointed that I haven't had the chance to get out. I have some big summer adventures planned so new videos will be out soon! Thank you so much for checking up on me. It is hard to do anything big in the Arizona summers. I hope to never have a gap this big between videos. Thanks for your patience!

@@codiacstudios no worries, just making sure you didn't go "splat" out there on a hike! Yeah, it's a oven out there for sure. Plus soooooo hard to produce the videos.
