Interesting, one thing is forgotten however. Gain staging after eq and compression to keep the same volume before and after, otherwise you are often led to believe it sounds better simply because it gets louder.

I made the same mistake of buying shitloads of plugins. It was fun messing around with new toys all the time but I've spent literally thousands of dollars on plugins and anymore my project template is all stock plugins, especially when they threw in the Vintage EQ bundle in a recent update. Yeah the most discerning ear might be able to tell the difference between one of the stock Vintage plugins and a UAD equivalent, but the stock stuff is still good enough and within the context of a full mix it just doesn't make much of a difference (to my ear). Also, I like using all the stock stuff because I collaborate via Splice and it's just easier when we're all using the same plugins.

The last two.... just shows how you get it. 3) The human ear, the way we percieve sounds and mentally compare. 4) The easily forgotten thing about endless variations of ways the sound travels to you and others and of the epic quest to achieve true feedback. 4.1) You could do a video about human ears - how they age and how different people have different scars / damages to the ears and how you could EQ back those forever lost frequencies after seeing someone with the equipment to meter when you hear a sine wave. ;)

@WhyLogicProRules
@WhyLogicProRules 5 жыл бұрын
Good catch Dr Voodoo! When you group a set of tracks and enable "Editing (Selection)" and "Quantize-Locked (Audio)" in the Group Settings, you'll see the Q button. The Q stands for "Q Reference." With it, you're able to choose which tracks in a Group Logic focus on when analyzing Transients for Flex Time. For example, in a multimic drum scenario I will use my Kick and Snare tracks as the Q-Reference tracks.

I'm new to Logic Pro X and there a lot of things I don't know about balance, EQs, Mastering and Mix. Looking at the plugins for what you are demonstrating seems to be a little easier to use. But I know others still use the plugins in Logic for what you are showing here. Should I not learn what is in Logic or just buy these plugins that you are talking about that makes your workflow easier? Hope my questions are not dumb.
@WhyLogicProRules
@WhyLogicProRules 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kenneth, not dumb at all! Learning what you have in Logic is well worth the effort. And honestly, more worth the effort than spending a bunch of money on 3rd party stuff. However, subscribers do ask often what 3rd party stuff I do rely on. So I created the video to appease that question. The metering plugins from Mastering the Mix (Levels, Bassroom, Reference) and Reference from Sonarworks, to me, are must-haves. Because they help guide the mix process and improve what you're hearing. But stick with the plugins in Logic and learn those the best you can.

In connection with reference tracks: (Aren’t) reference tracks already mastered, not just mixed. Therefore isn’t using a reference track - that’s already mixed AND mastered - with a track that’s only at the mix stage potentially misleading? Please set me straight on this if you can, thanks.

On a general note, I think it's a shame that too many people are seduced into spending money on the "latest, greatest, essential" plug-in that some producer of the month has declared to be the thing that your mixes/production will suck, if you don't install it. Most of the time from what I've seen people complain about is something along the lies of..."My mixes sound bad compared to XXXX yyyyyyy's mixes, but all I need to do is buy those plugins they talk about, and it will fix the problem. What, it would seem, at any rate is that many people expect a "magic bullet" that will improve things instantly. I have often tried to use only Logic's tools, because most of the time they are more than up to the task, and any shortcomings in the final mixed project, are NOT because of lack of plugins, but because I didn't do things properly myself. And I'm sure the same would be true if I used Cubase/Reaper/Ableton etc. etc. Most of the third party plugs I have are to cover something that isn't really there in Logic. Superior Drummer 3, because whilst I HAVE used Logic's kits, SD3 simply does a bigger better job for certain things. I also bought U-He's Pro one and five synths, partially because I still have and love my Sequential Pro-One, but I always liked the sound, and the U-He plugin captures that sound incredibly well. With no messing about with CV/Midi conversions, and saveable patch edits. Just different from , say, the ES2 I also bought a couple of cheap reverbs, mainly Audiority Xenoverb, because it's so different to Logics built in. Just an occasional sweetener that no native 'verb can get. Basically, when people have asked what plugins they should get to "get THAT sound" it's usually good advice to get to learn what is already there, to good effect. THEN go and buy something that you CAN'T do already. Ditto for Guitarists, bassists, keyboard players, drummers.....! Master what you already have, and then go after something new to extend what you can do already.

So what's wrong with Arc 2? That's what I have. I've heard so much about Sonarworks, and nothing about Arc 2, and now I'm not sure if I'm helping or hurting myself by using Arc 2.
@MelodicDreamers
@MelodicDreamers 4 жыл бұрын
I think Arc 2.5 is good. The major difference is Sonar has the headphone adjuster which Arc doesn't, and Sonar adapts to your system. So even when your listening to music or watching youtube it offers correction. Arc basically works in your DAW. If you don't need to mix/master in headphones or listen to music in a corrected environment then Arc is perfectly fine for helping clear your room up when mixing/tracking. Hope that helps.
@cbrooks0905
@cbrooks0905 4 жыл бұрын
MelodicDreamers, what’s funny is I’ve gotten so used to my room and it’s quirks from listening to as much music as I can in there that the Arc 2 correction actually throws me off. So I don’t even use it. It was a waste of money for me, but I can see how it would be useful if reference tracks were corrected as well, but trying to match my room corrected mix up to an un-corrected, professional mix is basically impossible.

Chris. Could you make a video about how to mix for cell phones? There really isn't much info out there compared to other topics. Though I can always get good mixes on my monitors, the mixes always "always" sound distorted on cell phones. I try to keep an eye on True Peak readings but still just can't seem to get it right. Heeeeelp! lol
@WhyLogicProRules
@WhyLogicProRules 5 жыл бұрын
I'll add it to the list! Let me ask you some seemingly silly questions: is there a brickwall limiter like the Adaptive Limiter on your Stereo Output when you Bounce out your track? What is the Output Ceiling set to?
@newguy6935
@newguy6935 5 жыл бұрын
I used Mastering the Mix's "Levels" to make sure my mix is meeting technical specs. It suggests a "True Peak" limit of -3 though it actually recommends -6. I'm usually at -4.5. My peak meter reading never gets above -6 on the Stereo Out, trying to allow for the usual headroom, etc. I really don't use any plug-ins on my Stereo Out though I have tried an EQ which helped. I also highpass on most instruments, except Bass and Kick of course. Mid tones seem to cause the most problem though they are balanced on the iZotope's Tonal Balance Curve. Other than just slamming the Stereo Out with a monster high pass or shelf, I just can't seem to get the energies down to the point where they don't distort on the cell phone. A bit dazed and confused at the moment. Thanks.
@WhyLogicProRules
@WhyLogicProRules 5 жыл бұрын
My suggestion would be to definitely place a brickwall limiter as the last plugin in your chain. *Just* to be safe. You don't have to drive up the gain if you don't want to. But the brickwall limiter will make sure nothing is clipping. Second, I wonder if you're adding Dither when you bounce your tracks? Dither is used to mask the negative effects caused by truncating your mix by Bouncing out. Logic's Bounce dialogue offers many different options for Dither. Beyond that, I wonder if there's some distortion present in your tracks that aren't noticeable until it's bounced out. Feel free to email me if you need more help: whylogicprorules.com/contact/

@TheFrankiejay 5 жыл бұрын
Raymond Castile For sure, mixes don’t sound good when listening on an iPhone as it is not a good monitoring speaker device. Mixes don’t translate well on these tiny speakers. You have to playback your song on various devices if possible. Why would you want to mix for iPhone anyway?

@goddim2006
@goddim2006 4 жыл бұрын
That is exactly it. You use the reference and compare it with your mix to find inconsistencies. If you don't have a reference point you are basically mixing in the blind. I use it a lot to check how the vocals sit in the mix, and to get an idea for EQ'ing instruments. Obviously, the purpose of it is not exactly copying everything, that is why is just a reference! Also, I tend to use 3 reference tracks.

gersonsalcedo even though i am a logic user i will admit, pro tools is the fastest daw for audio editing. However, once u get the hang of logic you’ll see that its efficient and user friendly like most apple products and softwares. for consolidating a single track: try duplicating the track. with the duplicated track, throw a sample delay on it and push the delay to about 800. then play with the volume till it sounds good. For cutting transients the fade tool is a must. get ur chops as close as possible and mess around with the fade tool on the front end of the audio file. theirs multiple layers to to this obviously so lemme kno if u have any other questions.

Logic Pro is made for apple. Sorry but good DAWs are for Linux, Windows and apple. I've research the crap out of this and while Logic is great there is something I think it missing. At least I have not seen it mentioned. I was use Ableton live 10 lite. I needed a new DAW and after my research decided on Ableton over pro tools, Reaper, FL Studio, Cubase and studio one. Then I discovered something. Ableton is leaning more and more toward DJing rather than music creation while at the same time I saw that people were talking about Presonous and how they keep adding new features that other DAWs have because they listen to their community. That made my buying decision. I love it. Studio One rules. everyone though has their fav so there you are.

Hey John, thanks for sharing your perspective and journey! I agree, everyone has their fav. I had a friend who has been using Ableton for years and was wondering if he should switch to Logic. I said, "dude, you know Ableton inside and out. Skip learning a new DAW and keep making music!" This channel is definitely for existing Logic users, and those who want to learn Logic. It's not a channel to shame other DAW users.

No offense, but Logic (notator) and Cubase date back to the Atari, and eMagic being bought by apple meant their engineering team designed the Core Audio system for MacOS, and Logic did suffer somewhat from neglect for a few years, but at this point the level of reliability and smoothness makes it a very reliable and efficient piece of software, and there are two accepted industry standard recording tools in the mainstream audio industry - Logic and ProTools. Reaper is gaining some traction. Cubase/Nuendo is dead. If you want an oddball windows DAW that nobody can read the files of, I would recommend sequoia. Pyramix, CEDAR, RADAR... they all have their place. Fairlight xynergi... blackmagic bought 'em so it's "complicated".
