Hey mate, I'm a Jehovah's Witness, so I can answer this question for you. The 144,000 is a literal number. They are certain Christians who have been anointed and chosen through Holy Spirit by Jehovah God himself to rule with Jesus Christ in Heaven as Kings and Priests. These 'Anointed Christians' are not from the literal 12 tribes of Israel on Earth, they are from the symbolic spiritual tribes of Israel that make up the many congregations of Christian Witnesses that worship Jehovah God today. God began choosing the 144,000 at the start of Pentecost 33CE mentioned in Acts Chapter 2. The last remaining ones will be chosen shortly before Judgement day. None of the 144,000 will be on Earth during the 1000 year millennial reign. They will all be in heaven with Christ by that point, helping the resurrected humans on Earth restore Earth into a Paradise like it was in the Garden of Eden. Hope this helps :)
