First time I ever saw this helmet, was in the 2001 movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’; there is a jousting scene where you see an opponent wearing one, that whole movie has a mixed bag of great and bad armour.

In terms of articulation - I think, Michael Keaton Batman cowl for a person wearing a Frog helmet. Yes, the Batman cowl has an open face, etc - I just mean the articulation. Watching Michael Keaton move around, or arguably not be able to move around, that's probably about what it was like trying to move around in a Frog Helm.

The expression "There's more than one way to skin a cat." refers to Catfish, which have a smooth, grey skin, rather than scales which can be tricky to remove. As a result, folks came up with many different solutions. Hence, "more than one way to skin a Cat(fish)". Cheers!

Hey @Metatron you probably won't see this, but I am wondering knowing what you know now what armour sets or combination would you wear if you had to build your perfect knights armour. All rules off the table you can wear samurai helmet and chainmail shirt whatever combination you wish. It may not have been so calculated as that. What is the likelihood that the medieval artist was actually present at any particular battle? Probably about 9%. So they would be working from written specifications and/or guesswork when executing the painting/engraving. Likely they would only have ever seen the king or knight in his finest ceremonial armor (typically a jousting set) whereas the typical knight might only have a single set of all-purpose armor which would likely be biased in favor of combat protection and flexibility.

Somewhat related, I really appreciate how much work this channel has done to dispel the myth of the "dark ages". I remember one of my teachers growing up, showing how London didn't have plumbing until far later than Rome as an example for Rome being more advanced, in a lot of ways, than the Medievals. What she forgot was both that London didn't have a large enough population to need plumbing until much later, and not all Roman cities had plumbing. This is evidenced by the fact of London, which was originally a Roman colony, did not have plumbing. Bit of a ramble there, but thought you or some people in the community might find the story humorous. Anyway, keep up the good work!

@@walangchahangyelingden8252 No, as the video states, it's designed for the joust specifically. My guess why frog helm was depicted in iconography in battle: Whoever drew that may or may not have seen a battle and has seen knights with frog helm during joust or on parade and just assumed they would be used in battle. Other less likely option: fg is 3. generation hand-me-down and the poor knight didn't have another type of helmet. (doesn't really fit timeline wise) Last option: maybe the knight in question wanted a helmet likely to stop bullets and didn't trust any other design (knowing full well of the disadvantages)

@@chuckschillingvideos By the time of the frog helmet, peasant levies were replaced by mercenary groups (who got their equipment "leased" by a quartermaster, so those didn't rely on pre-solider income), so that's not a suitable comparison/metric. the only thing I'd add would be glass for safety goggles to the eye slit. I was going to ask about why we sometimes see it in depicted in art about battles haha. My guess is that it's either a case of the artists being familiar with the joust and not with warfare, and deciding to depict jousting helmets within a war context; or there were forms of frogmouth made for battle, that presumably cast aside the most fundamentally restrictive elements like bolting to the chest defence, and would also quite possibly be removed once the wearer believes he is no longer at risk of receiving lance impacts. I think Matt Easton's made some reasonable suggestions about some helmets probably being removed, or visors shed once the man is going to enter the melee so that breathing and vision is optimised

Great point calling out people that point out the gaps in armor. It is interesting because the same could be said about modern armor. You don't see the average solider walking around in a bomb suit, because they would have no mobility. Just watch The Hurt Locker. That is very specific armor used for a specific task. Much like the Frog Mouth. Also, Spec Ops will often use a helmet, that doesn't cover the ears to fit Comms which sacrifices protection. Although I believe more modern helmets have Comms worked in.

actually an NFL helmet wouldn't be too out of place on a battlefield. remember NFL players still need to be aware of their surroundings, where are my team mates, where are the opponents, where is the "ball" so it allows for (in my opinion too much) articulation of the neck and good visibility, they are design to handle repeated abuse as well. design wise it's not too much different from the helmets you see a soldier wearing maybe a few decades ago. a better comparison would be to compare a motorcycle helmet to one used on a battlefield, the modern motorcycle helmet is made to protect you from ONE serious impact (because it is designed to break crack and deform as a way to absorb energy) and it does that perfectly well, but it would be awful on a battlefield because you don't get a lot of air in there, the screen gets dirty, you can't see and you want a battlefield helmet to not be destroyed in one use.

2:22 Ah, I wondered when our Italian friend would discover that one! I have always preferred "Not enough room to swing a dead cat around," but that one is pretty rare and is, to my knowledge, only used in the American South, and I am not even going to let the cat out of the bag on any of English's other cat-abuse metaphors!

Oh, how did you learn french ? Yes we also have a weird (and filthy) expression that we say instead of "bonne chance"... it's literally "merde" ^^ In the 19th century, when a theater piece was sucessful, it means that a lot of ppl were coming with horse-drown carriage and that the horses would have to stop in front of the theater for a bit, so the actors wished themselves "une grosse merde"... and it stayed. Feel free to use this classy french expression in your daily life : a job interview, a romantic date, a big announcement 😅😆 I guess it will paired perfectly with "pardon my french" 😉

My 6x Great Grandfather was a French Armorer in France and in the French Louisiana Colony. He received a Land Grant from the Government for his Service to the Revolutionary Army against The Brits and after his Military Career was over he became a wine Merchant in New Orleans. During the War of 1812 he put his uniform back on and commanded a Regiment of French Creoles under General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans against Gen Packingham’s British Army. Packingham went back to England packed in brine. 😮🤔

@@cjmunnee3356 oh wait….. here is THE best story of my ancestors on Colonial Louisiana….. my 6x Great grandfather’s daughter married and had two boys with her husband but due to complications in childbirth she went blind and not long after her husband died. She saw several medical “experts” and traveled to France with her Father and uncle to seek an “advanced” second opinion on treatment. These French experts decided that since she lost her eyesight in childbirth it was decided that she could regain her eyesight by another childbirth. However, she is a young blind, wealthy widow. So she decided she would marry Her Uncle! Yep her Father’s Brother but she needed permission from the Catholic Church in Rome. That process (likely along with a most generous monetary donation of course) took many months before the official document granting a medical dispensation from the Roman Curia based upon the French Doctor’s medical opinions arrived from Rome. In the meantime she got pregnant and went through childbirth and delivered a baby boy, she married her Father’s Brother, and never regained her eyesight so the French Physicians were wrong. Now that’s a really good story!

I think the reason that the frogmouth appears in medieval illustrations is that since kings wore it, it became a symbol of royalty, making the king recognisable. I'm looking forward to the next video to see if I'm making any sense here!

My guesses for why the frog mouth was shown in iconography are that either they were during the times of piece and the painters were used to it or they were associated with status. Like you said this is popular with the kings and the nobility so if you would give it to someone heroic.

The fact it's not as humane and fully metal i feel is what contributes to its reputation of being both so intimadating and silly, even its "fashion value"... It fits on some outfits very well and very terribly on others, no in-between, hence also why most people tend to have such divisive ideas about even among tbe individual(people saying they love it one moment and hate it the other)

The shape of later period frogmouth great helmets is also designed to deflect lances to the side reduceing the amount of force applied to the torso, neck and head. The shape is also designed to deflect splinters of a lance away from the eye slits with the top part of the helmet recessed from the leading edges of the lower part. The engineering of these is very well done for absorbing and redirecting the force of impacts. Is it still possible to put a lance through the eye slit? Maybe, bit the angles involved make it very unlikely to happen accidentally, and very hard to do deliberately as well.
