I have seen these Super Caps in action here in the southern suburbs in Cape Town South Africa. Friends of mine at Green Energy SA are installing them in homes. Quick, clean and space efficient installation. They work very well, better than anything I have EVER seen. I will be purchasing a 3.5 KW. Super cap for our sailing yacht and will charge it with 2x 270W solar panels and a wind gen. They do exist, work well and are cost effective. (7KW also available)

Capacitors (super or otherwwise) are not ready for market use in the way they are described here. They are for right now strictly a laboratory item. They don't work as effectively as a battery that's why batteries are used instead of capacitor banks as a storage medium. Capacitor research is a hot area right now and much is being done to bring the tech up to speed, in the mean time Lithium based batteries are the best most advanced storage medium we have for now, on the horizon are things based on carbon nano-tubes.

WOW!!!! I have always wondered why cap discharge couldn't be tightly regulated. I worked with some fairly large cans before my quest for. energy storage that didn't require a chemical catalyst. gave up after frying several hundred dollars worth of electrical regulating devices. This video really floats my boat. No grid tie inverter needed is extremely cool.

A bank of 25 cent each capacitors connected in series, with a little bit of plastic holding them together. A 3 cent data cable. And $5,000 worth of software. Priceless. (I have a feeling this product will be on the market at a very high price but less than a bank of batteries for your home or car.

One problem with capacitors for energy storage is that while the voltage in a storage battery only drops slightly from fully charged to fully discharged, the full discharged voltage of a capacitor is zero. So while more energy may be stored in a given volume or weight than a chemical battery, only a small percentage of it may be usable.

For those that are asking about availability, or doubting the capability of supercap storage, products are available. Look up Maxwell for one, but there are others. There are many YT vids about those that have built supercap storage banks to replace car batteries and they work well. Even if they do discharge over an unexpected long standing time, they can be charged in seconds, so a charge of another vehicle or a mains power source and you are good to go in seconds. Supercaps are all over the place now in electronics, many backup power sources in computers and standby applications are by supercaps. They are even available on ebay. The next gen supercaps are in the pipeline, probably using a material derived from hemp. These will have a storage capacity greater by a factor of at least 10 and upto 100 times greater than existing supercaps.

We used generators backup by lead acid batteries, same as used for submarines, to back up relay stations on mountains. Depending on costs this could be a great option. As far as electric vehicles, our original power still comes from coal or gas.

I can remember when completing my electrical apprenticeship at college we were studing all about capacitors and the materials they were made from. The lecturer was firmly old and took a lot of time explaining this to us which to be honest bored the complete class. He then went off sick and we had a young lecturer replace him. He asked the class what the subject was that we were upto. We answered the materials that capacitors are made from. Well that just a complete waste of time, all you need to know is the specification of any capacitor you may need to replace when a fault appears. You just select the correct capacitor and fit it you dont need to know what materials it is made from. Well that was over 30 years ago, if the old lecturer was alive today then he would able to say i told you so. Its important to know about the materials that are used in a capacitor.

@@BXJ-mi9mm If you use the battery in combination with ultracapacitors, you can have the energy from the brakes fill the ultracapacitors and then the vehicle can use that power generated in starts and stops in cities. The ultracapacitors get connected to the brakes for the fast regen, from the brakes and excess then can be put into the batteries when the ultracapaciters are full. Such as when you start off breaking does not work the same when the battery is full, so if you have the ultracapaciters in front of the battery for charging would allow for energy capture from the brakes. This would extend the length of the battery in the city with the constant starts and stops.

Firstly, I congratulate the company for the technical achievements you have made. This is a field where it is needed. I should point out though that some of the points presented here are either quite hard to believe, or very misleading if the listener knows something about engineering. 1) I find it hard to believe that the energy density has reached that of batteries. Are you speaking of lithium or lead acid batteries? Specific numbers would be nice. If true, this would be great news. 2)About the safety concerns: All energy storage devices are inherently dangerous. If there is energy stored in a way that can be easily extracted, it can escape. The fact that a supercapacitor can be discharged in a second does not really help, as any engineer or scientifically literate person understands. Batteries can do that too, it's called exploding. If all the energy is dumped to immediate surroundings in one second, that will look like an explosion regardless of methods used. This is not to say it is a flaw in supercapacitors; it is not. Rather we should dismiss the idea that we should expect any sort of dense energy storage medium to be very safe and stable.

The comment about the capacitor discharge comment reminds me of high school and the jerk who would charge a capacitor and then throw it to you, yelling, "catch". In the context of the above comment, I think the intent was that the supercapacitors could be transported uncharged.

There is a little hybrid car that uses super caps to store enough energy for one launch and recover energy for the next launch with regen. This lets you use a 25 HP ICE and a 100 HP motor and get peppy driving when you need it and good gas mileage on the highway. But supercaps are not suitable for a battery electric vehicle because you would need to fill the back of a 20' uhaul truck with super caps to get a 100 kWh energy storage, and there are several other issues.

Because these capacitors are able to charge and discharge very quickly, they can be used in regenerative btreaking. The energy of breaking can be stored in capacitors, because breaking duration is usually 5 seconds. And then car can use this energy for accilaration which requires high power in short time. So capacitors can be added to bettery powered cars but they cannot replace bettery entirely because capacitors cannot store large quantity of energy for longer duration. So bettery is merathon runner and Capacitors are sprint runners

Interesting view. I bought 6x 2.5v ones to 'play with' - I don't know where they are right now, but I've been testing them every year or so - they keep their charge pretty well and unlike LiPo, I'm not worried about remembering where I put them for the next test, because even if they are empty, they will be fine. The energy density is not as high as LiPo, or lead-acid, but they are a great supplement for high spike loads if used in parallel.

I have 3x Maxwell 50V 178F (2000F in series) ultracapacitor banks. I was going to use them for regen on a 144V EV car. you need a good controller to utilise them. Them can charge/discharge at around 2000A

(8:10) i completely agree that the main hindrance of buying an electric vehicles is the time it takes to charge the battery. that said, if supercapacitors could at least cut that time in half, far more people would actually consider buying one; however, if they actually can reduce the charging time to 30 seconds like he said, electric vehicles would _very_ quickly become the norm.

Thanks for the many comments on this video. Whether or not this specific company will be the leader in moving Supercapacitors to market, it looks like super capacitors could be on the verge of changing energy storage, according to a new report from IDTechEx www.idtechex.com/research/reports/supercapacitor-materials-2017-2027-000534.asp

Super capacitor looks much better than lead acid battery in performance, service life, and safety. Quick charging but slow discharging will be the key attribute. What technology is involved there?

He could probably pitch then as having more capacity by virtue of it being able to fully discharge without degradation. That is a problem with lith batteries in that their "capacity" really isn't their capacity if you don't want to ruin your expensive investment by draining it repeatedly. Lot of phony range numbers with electric cars currently because of that.

Can you charge them with solar panels and hook them up to a grid-tie inverter and use the them for the evening? My solar make to much energy during the day but looking to store the power for few hours during the evening before bedtime, they sound better than traditional battery storage. I would love to buy some if this would work

What is their self-discharge rate? Typically capacitors have a much higher self-discharge rate than any battery. That is where by just sitting around a for while, it looses its charge.

Nice video. Told me something that I never knew. Now the million dollar question. How much for a capacitor that will replace my car battery and how much for a unit that will power a car for at least two hundred miles. Lastly, when will it debut in the market? Please make another video to answer these.

it's a private held company so you can't buy stock in them yet. There are similar companies that have been around a while and have products you can buy like Maxwell and Sirius . Many have stocks you can buy like I have. I've read the Mazda iLoop hybrid uses ultra caps instead of batteries in their hybrid but I've never seen one yet. Bollore uses then in their bluecar electric car.

Super caps are interesting but have minuscule energy storage. They are very low voltage and are useful for a few micro-amps at most. Short them out and the large ones can be dangerous. Ten thousand farad at 48v in a small package, now we are talking.

I really doubt about it can match the power density as lithium ion but I will be very intrested to know more and Super capacitor too are risky to handle, It's true it can discharge quickly but where will the discharge energy go? It must given a thought!! But over all the product is futuristic.

how long do you think supercaps would be available worldwide specially AsIa it sucks because asian always left to be the last to benefit, and does it come in smaller size for mobile application? since you mention it is also applicable on car battery , question' does the alternator motor would be fast enough to charge it ? in that case ,the theory of perpetual charge and discharge of EV application is possible ,yes or no?
