David Janssen IS the Fugitive! I'm so old, I didn't even have to google that.

People HAD to see if Richard Kimble would finally catch 'The One Armed Man'.

Granted I do greatly enjoy oldies TV to begin with but it's a *fantastic* show. Janssen's Richard Kimble is so unsentimental yet very compassionate towards the issues of the people he runs across, it's such a unique combination that's rarely seen anywhere else.

My sisters and I used to watch reruns of The Fugitive on PBS when I was a kid. I even recorded the series finale when they promoted and aired it. So when I was in high school and saw the trailer for this, I knew I had to go see it. And holy crap, what an amazing take on the original story. So well-paced and acted, this movie was a big freaking deal when it came out.

The Fugitive was to the series to have a finale episode. The ratings for that episode is why all successful series have a finale.

And there was also Robert Downey Jr.

Yes. People loved the Marshals in this movie so much - just like you guys did - the filmmakers built a “semi-sequel” around them. Pretty good flick, and of course, Tommy Lee Jones.

Strongly second the recommendation of Justified! Timothy Olyphant is perfection in his role as Raylan Givens, U.S. Marshall sent back to his home state of Kentucky. Justified is amazing, and has two of the best TV characters ever. U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens and Outlaw Boyd Crowder.

I served on a Federal Jury once. Between the time we began deliberations and the reading of the verdict, we were under guard by a Marshal - though as it wasn’t a criminal case, only during the time we were in the courthouse.

They are in charge of courthouse security (and can employ other security forces and contractors for things like metal detection, courthouse night watchmen, etc). They act as jailers for individuals held in custody during a trial. They inspect vehicles and packages coming in and out of federal courthouses. They coordinate operations with the Department of Corrections officers. They safeguard and transport dangerous, important, or illicit evidence. They have full emergency task force and response forces (for example if someone were to make an assault on Federal courthouse directly or using biological or chemical agents). They coordinate national and international protection and emergency evacuation services for Federal Judges (i.e. An Article III Judge gets into a bad security situation while on vacation internationally). And as mentioned above witness protection and fugitive recovery. And yes witness and jurior security is also a big thing. They are specifically an arm of the Department of Justice (Executive Branch) but they a large part of their services is structured around protecting the US Courts (Judicial Branch). And of course, are a liaison to DHS, FBI, ATF, State Department, and the hundreds of other Federal Police branches that exist. I worked for multiple Federal Courts districts as a creator of official policy and security advisor as for the Administrative Office of the US Courts on a national level. Several times in that job I had to both work with the US Marshals as well as coordinate emergency action procedures and plans between court staff, Judges, and the USMS.

As sequels go, it's pretty good. But it was basically thrown together in demand for more Tommy Lee Jones, at the time. As a result, while it is a good movie on its' own, it is still a clear step down from "The Fugitive."

Jones won the Oscar for this role so a sequal was mandatory.

@Sean H Correct. The initial idea with her character was that she'd join Kimble and go on the run with him. Eventually, the writers felt that it probably wasn't a great idea, considering Kimble's wife was murdered, and him falling in love with another woman while trying to solve the murder case was very likely the last thing on his mind. Julianne Moore still kept her high-level billing, but she only worked on the film for a day or two.

Yes, this was before Boogie Nights, so it was a surprise seeing her pop up in the movie! Also Joe Pantoliano the guy who played Cypher in The Matrix is Tommy Lee Jones’ Deputy!

She did have a bigger role in 'The Hand That Rocks The Cradle', which is also an awesome movie.

Moore's role was supposed to be bigger in this movie, but her later scenes got cut (they were shot and were supposed to be on the special edition DVD but were pulled). And I think Jane Lynch's character was added to fill in those plot turns that Moore's character originally did, but I'm not sure. Much of the movie was rewritten on the fly--Lynch remembers working out dialog with Harrison Ford in their scenes right before they filmed it.

Some romantic scenes between Kimball and Julianne's character were also shot, but they were cut after test audiences didn't like them.

LOL I think they realized nobody would believe someone was falling in love with Julianne Moore. XD

@@Deined a romance between them would be stupid since he was still mourning his wife's death and arguably would dampen gerard's interest in pursuing the theory that kimble was innocent if he became aware has messing around with a nurse while on the run.

Also, Sela Ward was asked back to film a few more flashback scenes; to show them as a loving couple prior to her murder.

Chicago really does become a character in this movie, I remember watching this as a kid and wanting almost immediately to visit Chicago.

Andrew Davis (the director) is actually from Chicago, and knows the city in and out. He also made the Chuck Norris movie Code of Silence, which also used its Chicago locations to good effect.

Having grown up in the Chicago suburbs and then lived in the city proper in my 20s and early 30s, this movie was just wonderful to watch just to recognize all the locations that were used. Another bit of cool info is that many of the reporters and cops in the movie were actual Chicago news reporters and cops. I recognized several of reporters who had cameos throughout the movie.

The idea that there's ONE "best performance" of the year is kinda dumb to begin with, especially considering the different weight different types of roles have. You're more likely to win an award by playing a neurodivergent character, an iconic real-life figure, a soldier in a war film(bonus points if it's a war the US fought in) etc, hence the term "Oscar-bait". I think it's a good sign when the academy decides to award a man who can say that "henhouse, doghouse, outhouse" line without sounding silly. :D

Tommy Lee Jones & John Malkovich from both movies were competing for Best Supporting Actor that year.

I recently rewatched that for the first time in a long while, and it still as fantastic as I remembered! Peter Weir is such an incredible director, and Witness is one of his best films.

Witness is great. (Pretty much any Peter Weir movie is good, underrated director). "The Mosquito Coast", another Harrison Ford/Peter Weir collaboration is also great, but much darker with Ford maybe playing his first anti-hero.

That’s a great way to look at it. It’s also part of why I, personally, enjoy Apollo 13 and The Martian so much. It’s fun to watch thoroughly competent people solving complicated problems in movies.

Another great TV show made by Quinn Martin who produced The Fugitive TV show was "The Invaders" which had a similar "Man on the run" format. Never been made into a movie which may be a good thing given the current state of movies.

And he shows a lot of these realizations through facial expressions. The movie respects the audience enough to let them see his character developing and not spell it out in dialogue.

If they didn't take Kimble into custody, Kimble's corpse would have been taken into custody.

Correct, when it involves recapturing fugitives their authority supersedes all other jurisdictions.

An antagonist is defined as a character responsible for/ forcing the protagonist to evolve/change. It is a misconception that an antagonist is a bad guy. Can be. But it has nothing to do with being good or bad.

I agree that 1993 was a great year for films. My favorites from the year include "Short Cuts", "Falling Down", "Twenty Bucks", "Benny & Joon" & "This Boy's Life".

Also pretty accurate take of US police work , for last 50 years cops have used Reid technique questioning method , use of claustrophobic room , repeated accusations of guilt , presentation of evidence ... real or invented wont matter ... slowly build-up of pressure that makes admitting a crime seem like the easiest way out.

Not to mention 'Short Cuts.'

I make this point in a lot of reaction videos' comments, but the '90s were truly an embarrassment of cinematic riches. We didn't know how good we had it back then.
