For this video I take a couple of steps back from motorcycles and address something that has created a mini discussion on MCrider. Many of you have asked what is wrong with my left eye. In this video I answer the question and tell you a little of the story about me.
It was kind of weird opening up so much on camera and kind of long winded...but you are the ones who asked the question, so it's not my fault.
Grab some popcorn and sit back as I tell you the story of my freaky eye.

Being taught how to ride from the other side of the world by a Texan baseball playing combat priest...This is why the internet is great! Dude I love the eye, it locks you into a cowboy stare and helps with your natural ability to hold peoples attention. I have learned so much from this channel. You may not be saving lives in the army but you sure are here with educating us all on how to stay safe. Amazing work man. Once I pay off a bit of my new bike I will drop some cash on supporting the show. Keep staring em down Tex. Coming at you all the way from New Zealand.

I, too, returned to motorcycling after a long time off a bike. I immediately appreciated both your delivery and your innate humility. You’re a kind man, and it comes through. I’ve learned a LOT about safety on my bike from you.- so yes, you’re making a difference, Kevin. That’s not an exaggeration. Thanks for modeling your humility and comfort with yourself with your story. I’ll continue to recommend your channel to to others.

You know, there is something else that you excel at, and that is story telling. The way that you told that story, had me drown to it as if I was watching an exciting movie. The details and the connections between different parts as well as the build, the a pax, till the satisfyingly end. It was amazing listening to you tell your story. Write it in a book it will become best seller. Maybe even a movie. Trust me, it is worth it.

I must admit, as an atheist, I almost stopped watching when God's name cropped up. But I've watched a few of your videos and consider you an articulate and intelligent guy, so I watched to the end, out of respect for the great job you're doing. As it happens, I found your story very interesting. I commend you for your bravery in sharing both your story and your beliefs and share your happiness that you discovered another path to a fulfilling life. I've been riding bikes for over 40 yrs, here in the UK, but I'm still picking up useful tips watching your videos. So, good luck for the future, and keep them coming. Respect.

Hey David, thanks for watching to the end. I'm glad you did. Not because I want to try to convince you of anything but because it is refreshing for someone to listen these days even when they don't agree. Thank you for not following the norms these days and only listening to what you agree with. I believe it is only by listening to each other that we can see the heart of the other person. Even if we don't agree with how they got to where they are we can at least respect their motivation for getting there. You are a good man! Glad to have you as a subscriber.

Dear Sir/MCrider, Thank you so much for this video. It is truly a great story full of life's milestones: heartbreak, love, fulfillment, goals, struggle, etc. I am so glad I found out about your channel. I love your calm demeanor. I, like David Green, am an atheist. Growing up, I wasn't really raise to believe a religious doctrine. Then I became a very strong Christian for 10 years or so (~15-25 y.o.?). But now, on a scale of 1-7, would say that I tend towards 6.75 as an atheist). Anyhow, both your two comments are great examples of conversation without demeaning the other. Anyhow, my real question is, I have been riding for around 3.75 months now. I had the idea when I first started motorcycling those few months ago, that I would get the very basics of motorcycle control (balance, clutch, braking, etc.), and then I would take an MSF course. My thinking was that I didn't want to be distracted by the super basic things, and miss the real great tips I could learn from the course. Now that I am quite comfortable with riding, I'm starting to doubt a need for taking a course (at least the Basic course). Maybe I should take a more advanced course? But you have thrown a "wrench" into that idea, too. My thinking is that I should be able to get all I need to know from online resources, and channels such as yours. What is your opinion on this? Thank you, huyked
@bmfilmnut
@bmfilmnut 7 жыл бұрын
I almost stopped watching his videos for the same reason. I don't like people preaching their religion to me either. But, unlike you, I didn't find his story interesting at all. In fact, I found it bizarre and a bit creepy. I watched it because it was so weird that I had to see where it was going. When he sticks to motorcycle technique, his videos are good but I'm not sure I can watch them anymore after seeing this. David: I suggest that you keep your religion to yourself and stick to motorcycle technique. You are good at that. The fact that you feel that you must spill your guts to total strangers and post your life story under the guise of a video about an eye condition is very odd. It's misleading too. It says something a bit disturbing about you.

Exactly the same here. I don't know if it's unusual for an antheist but I have quite a few religious friends, so I know most Christians aren't sience denying, pious, self righteous dicks, but it's always nice to meet someone who lives the "Word" even if I don't believe in it. Respect man

I would recommend taking the course anyway. I took it, although I had slightly less time on the bike than you. It was an awesome experience. Some of the info was stuff I already knew, but there were great tips, hands on exercises done with experienced riders to critique and improve your skills, and it gave me a definite increase in confidence. Totally worth the money, even if I had to scrimp for it.

I am a 57-year-old woman and I have been riding exclusively for the last 6 years. I have no car, just the bike. And even though it is my sole transportation for all the mundane things in life, like grocery shopping, I still get so excited everytime I get to ride! It is a passion. I, too, am a Christian and I, too, have a freaky eye. Three years ago I inexplicably lost sight in my right eye. I went through brain surgery (I don't recommend it!) and am still blind (i see a little of my periphery) and that eye is not the same as my left either. I love your videos. I am always looking for ways to improve as a rider, so thanks for the tips!

The lack of humility in our world is at times overwhelming and this video gives me some comfort that there are humble folks "online". Due to a birth defect in my heart we did not know I had, two heart operations and another severe line of duty injury I am no longer in the fire department and I am very much like you looking for my next calling. I have problems with fears and anxieties after my experiences as a fire department but I love to ride and ride most of the time even on the winter. Kevin. I'm not sure how I happened across your channel; maybe a passion for motorcycling introduced me. I was thoroughly engrossed in your story, and as a now retired British Royal Marine Commando, entirely empathise with your unfortunate accident that cut short such a promising and passionate career. In terms of where you are now, I'm a firm believer that we have to make the most of the cards that we are dealt, and that if that can involve paying back through helping and developing others, it is not only credible but also a calling and personal reward. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel, you clearly hold all of the virtues, ethos and values of your time serving your country and now as a veteran and also demonstrate a shining example of not giving up. Keep doing what you do, and I wish you the greatest of success and happiness. Lee

Dear Kevin, thank you for sharing your story with us. It is sad to hear how your military carrier came to an end. There must be a reason for that which we don't understand. Your McRider youtube is so interesting can't wait for the next one. I am not a Motorbike rider but I enjoy them very much. I am 70 now and will most probably never ride a bike. It makes a lot of sense the way you explain things. Please keep it coming. Thank you. Regards Jurg

MC, I'm about your age, 52, I bought my first bike 3 weeks ago on Sept. 9, I've always longed for motorcycles but knew better that in my reckless 20's and 30's, I would not be safe, so I bought a Honda CB300r, a great starter naked bike, easy to ride and have watch as many of your videos as possible, as I know I am mature enough now to drive defensively and safely while enjoying this awesome "sport" as I call it... another thing that touched me was now watching this eye video, we have a lot in common, bikes our age but now the eye... I too was struck by a baseball, I was playing baseball for my High School team, at that time the players took turns base coaching 3rd base, while the head coach was in the dugout. One of our best hitters was up to plate, and a runner at 2nd, I was down the line more than I should and he ripped a line drive at me, I saw it the entire way but my legs wouldn't move it was so fast, it struck my left cheek, shattering the socket, luckily for me, no eye damage and I too now have a plastic implant to support the eye. Well my friend, keep doing what you're doing, and I'll keep watching trying to learn and stay safe. Be well, Jon from Cherry Hill, NJ

I too have an left eye injury. Happened when i was a toddler(4 yrs old) I am now 46 and my eye is in almost the exact state as yours( legally blind) My whole life has been dictated by it in a sense.. I wanted a military career in he worst way especially when friends were serving in Desert Storm. I haven’t let it define me though. I did everything law would allow including baseball,soccer and most of all motorcycles of all flavors. My wife and now enjoy long day trips on our Harley Ultra. You are correct we have a bigger blind spot but with vigilance we over come. Kind of cool to know you are in my boat. The lord works in mysterious ways. God bless brother.

Hi Kevin, Thanks for sharing your story, brother. I've been riding street bikes since I was 16, I'll be 66 this year. I am legally blind in my left eye as well, the eye is fine but the optic nerve is damaged. Two weeks ago I bought a HD Road King Classic, after 20 odd years riding a Honda vfr800. I owned a Sportster before that, so this is my second Harley. It sure is a big difference from the Vfr. Its like learning to ride all over again, especially getting used to the location of the shift lever and the brake pedal. So I have been watching a lot of your videos to brush up on the basic fundamentals. Thank you for everything you have done to build up MCRider, it is a very good channel and I must say I have learned a lot of good information. So take care Kevin, and heres to 5 more years of MCRider, Paul

That was 30 minutes of my life........ that was really well spent!! :) Yes, in the beginning I was wondering why so long, but it all came together, it all made sense. It was in many ways a beautiful story, but in the end it also became a story about riding. We all ride for different reasons. Some just because it is "oool". Some because it is practical. But many of us have - for different reasons - love, soul and stories invested in it, and sometimes it is difficult to put your finger on why it actually matters so much. Your story made me love riding even more, made me love my motorcycle a little more, and life a little more :) Thank you!!

Thank you Kevin for sharing your story and letting all of us get to know you as a person and what makes you tic! I’ve watched some of your other video’s prior to this one, and they have helped me become a better, safer rider. Trying to keep things brief I simply commented on them “Thank you”. Little did I know that watching this video would also impact my life. You have greatly inspired me today. But not because you are overcoming a tragic accident, defying your handicap, and accomplishing goals you have set. It’s because you exemplify a characteristic that you never mention in this video, as you humbly told your story. Yet you have displayed this characteristic throughout your high school days to present day. “Courage”! You have tremendous courage, to never give in to your fears, whether it be schooling, physical challenges at boot camp, serving our country in the Army, or not giving up on yourself after a serious injury. When you felt weak, you dug deep within yourself and became stronger! I’m not saying you did all of this alone, you know faith, family, and friends play an important role. But without having tremendous courage you would not be the person you have became today! Again, thank you! I look forward to your continued educational videos.

Thank you Kevin for sharing your story, it's been a journey for you, with a surprisingly good outcome. I'm 57 and haven't been on a bike in 24 years, after happening upon a beautiful Pearl Ivory Cream and Black 1997 Honda Shadow 1100 ACE in immaculate condition, my WIFE! suggested I buy it! I instantly fell back in love with riding! I had a CT 70 at 9, an ST 90 a little later, a CB 350 when I was sixteen gapping from there to a V65 Magna at 32 which I had for a couple years until now with the Shadow. Being, Ahem, "A little rusty", I thought I would see what I could find to brush up on my skills and, while watching KZfaq videos of Shadows once the weather turned cold up here in Canada, I found mcrider… in the first video I learned something I hadn't thought of before and I've been learning ever since! I want to Thank You for what your doing and, to be truthful was just going to keep watching the videos without buying in, but now I feel compelled to pony up some cash and help you and "the pretty blonde" after hearing this story (even tho I'm pretty leary of buying things on line) So once I figure out a way to do this I'm comfortable with I will, and I plan to spend this winter watching every one of your videos while I patiently wait for spring, change all the fluids, filters, and plugs in my bike, & add as much tasteful lighting to the front and rear as possible. I have a friend who has a lazy eye and unusually he can see equally well out of both and he makes a game out of switching which eye he looks at you with during a conversation, both my wife and I now know to follow whatever one he's using at the time... awesome guy and so are you! Many Thanks and...God Bless! Hopefully sometime we'll "See you on the Road"
