When I finished the quest, I turned jake into a guard. His punishment for almost becoming a raider is to protect his family with his life. Gave him the proper means to do it too

When Slag starts his little countdown, I in turn have myself a quick lunch of Yao Guai ribs, a Nuka Cherry, and take some Orange Mentats. Then, by the time he gets to 2, I'm already shooting. My philosophy in this situation is...Never mess with a pissed off, pre-war housewife, carrying a fully-auto Combat Rifle, loaded with explosive .45 rounds. Especially when matters of family are involved.

I took on Saugus at level 11 on survival mode... god I hated that.

When I did this quest, I decided to take the poetic route. I had the Pain Train skill maxed out and had X-01 Power Armor when I faced the boss. I sprinted up the stairs and sprinted into him, sending him straight into The Forge. He didn't die right away, even got a few swipes in at me, but I shot at him a couple times and made sure that The Forge's fire was what finally killed him. Poetic justice at it's finest. If they had gravestones, I would've put on it, "He died as he lived, by the hand of The Forge."

The personalities of these NPCs is very lifelike. In one of my playthroughs I came back to Finch farm later after saving abe's son, only to find his wife captured by the same guys. Revenge? I knew I had to save her, or I'd get an earful from her if I didn't. lol

well the truth is the Minutemen used to be a lot stronger they even saved Diamond City from supermutans so it's possible he was talking about a time when the Minutemen help clear out the Commonwealth

I love how he calls lower-level players "younger" players. "Did ya think I'll ever be as strong as you Ma?" "One day, son if you make sure to to work hard and eat your buff-out"

I brought that boy back home, gave him a good job as a provisioner to County Crossing. Then the first attack on the farm, which was from Gunners, he up and disappears on me. Though I guess he could have gotten killed and I never found the body.

Honestly I do the same thing with Jake. I make him a provisioner, or I send him to the castle and dress him up as a Minuteman. I figure that time in the Minutemen fighting raiders and seeing the type of evil that can happen out in the Commonwealth would mature him up.

I actually got this quest from Preston in a low level. Well that was traumatic

With each new playthrough, I become more convinced that Slag originally came from The Pitt. I could be wrong but it explains his origins outside of the commonwealth, the brutal nature of the pit explains his obsession with strength and toughness, and it also explains his desire and ability to take over and use the Ironworks.

I remember doing this quest, meeting Slag and thinking "Yes, yes, YES! I want to join! I want to be evil." But, nooooooo -_-

Oh man, my first play through I screwed the Finchs in every way possible, and none of it was intentional. First, I killed Jake during the fight at the Ironworks while wildly throwing grenades, and then to make matters worse, during an invasion I blew Abigail's head off when I mistook her for a raider. Awful. And as if that wasn't bad enough, before I even noticed that I'd killed her, I looted her. (I like to loot the Invaders and equip the armor and weapons on my settlers.) OMG. Horrible! I didn't know what to do, so I just put her body on her bed. I came back later to check on the farm, and Abraham and Daniel were just standing there looking at her. I felt so rotten. Probably the worst I've ever felt about a gaming experience. Empathy can be a real bitch. I waited for night to fall, then dragged her body out of the cabin and threw her in the river while her family was sleeping. I avoided Finch's Farm for quite a while after that, but finally went back when they were invaded again. After we kicked the snot out of the Forged, Abraham and Daniel were so effusive in their thanks. They were saying how terrible their lives would have been if not for me. If they only knew!!! On the one hand, I was pleased that they didn't hold it against me, OR at least not KNOW that I killed half the family, but on the other hand, I still feel pretty badly about how the whole thing went down. So, um, yeah. I always go out of my way to make sure the Finch family gets a happy ending now. Except my latest character went straight from the vault to Nuka World for a raider play through. I gotta figure out a way to let the Finch familyhave their peace. Maybe I can just avoid them altogether? Thanks for reading!

As far as where Slag is from I would say he is probably from the Pitt. Possibly raiding to get slaves for the Pitt. After all Jake does mention prisoners. Depending on if the mutations that plague the Pitt have been cured or not at this point in time the Pitt would still need slaves. Marie from the Pitt would have only been around 10 or 11 years old by the time Fallout 4 happens so the amount of time that they could have actively been looking for the the cure wouldn't have been long. The Mutations from the Pitt might also explain Slag's insanity.

Level 11 on very hard......... Worst decision of my life even with power armor. Gods bless never ending Double Barrel Shotguns.

Okay, I made a post on your recent video about this; however, I wanted to say thank you again. I cleared the Forge, saved Jake, didn't save the settler, and completely missed the Dampening Coil, bobblehead, and book. Also, I was using a Super Sledge when fighting Slag, and when I killed him in VATS I literally knocked him out of his Armor. He was laying on the ground and his armor was standing there marked as owned, but accessible. I have no Mods, and couldn't find anything about this in a brief search. Preston was my companion, and Slags armor showed as owned so I was planning to return anyway. I'll pick those missed items up when I do. Thank you for the videos, and the lore.

I actually came across this quest by complete accident while doing the Yangtze quest. I walked in, got super confused as to what Slag and Jake were doing, and then got even more confused when Jake started talking to me as if I'd already started a quest for him or something.

"...It'd put a smile on Granddad's face to know it was being used to help people." Yeah.. helping them by harming others xD

I completely forgot I did this and kept asking myself, "Why can't I removed this item from my inventory?" This video reminded me why.

I actually have a theory about the Forged I would like to run past you all. Since Slag comes from outside the Commonwealth, set up shop in the old Iron works, and actually seems to know something about how to process metal, it makes me think he is a Raider from The Pitt. All the signs are there. I am guessing he moved from The Pitt to the capital Wasteland after the Vault Dweller finished with the Pitt. He heard about the Commonwealth and thought it would be a good place to start his own Raider Clan. It would even explain his Power armor, since the Brotherhood of Steel had left a few suit behind in the Pitt after the Scourge.

Reg. your question, Oxhorn: in my first play through I visited Saugus Ironworks much to early. I was burned to a crisp mostly even before reaching the entrance doors. And , finally, in the end fight against , ehm, you- know-who, I ran around like a rabbit in panic at the bottom of that room, desperately trying to hide somewhere. Only with the help of enormous amounts of Jet, Psycho and other good stuff I made it, barely. It was terribly hard. The second time I went in a level 50 character and was done early enough for some sun bathing at the Finch Farm afterwards.

my level was like 8 so it was challenging as hell. i couldnt get passed the front gate. however, now im lever 19, have better weapons, armor, and Dance as my companion, the Forge is good as mine on monday.

in my main save right after the corvega quest presto sent me to finch farm...a**hole [I was lv 11]

I didn't even find this place because of the quest, I just stumbled across it at level 14 while I was looking around doing one of the Minutemen settlement quests. I kept getting killed by the Forged and their Flamers, till one time I ran to the Pool that Wiseman ran and they followed me. Luckily one of the trade caravans was there too and the combined firepower of me, the Caravan boss and the 2 guards killed the Outer guards. I swiped the Cage armor and their weapons and made it in. Got killed a few times INSIDE too but me and Cogsworth slaughtered our way all through to Slagg and Jakes' initiation. Headache inducing...and I loved it when I won.

Oxhorn, do a video on a theory of what happened to all of the sea life, like the dolphins and stuff please. It would be a cool video to watch :)

Slag probably came from a town where parents feed kids raw meat and beat them with sticks. Honestly, if Slag if used the Saugus Ironworks forges to make iron products, a possible theory is that Slag may use the forged iron as a way to make caps, because steel and iron are valuable materials. He would possibly sell the metals to the highest buyer who will pay the most caps and to make himself look tough be immediately killing the buyer afterwards to just get the money and keep the metal as well as grab the loot the buyer has, another theory is that he could use the metal for construction and repairs on the Ironworks, he can also use the metal to make defenses, armor, weapons, and even ammunition. It's a shame that you couldn't find a peaceful way out, but it was a good try anyway, Slag and his gang of Forged may be ruthless but their overconfidence led to their downfall...

Bruh, fighting the forge is one thing, getting there is just as CRAZY. The gunners are savage, and that damn assaultron dammit!

Regarding Slag's place of origin, there's one possibility that immediately comes to mind: The Pitt.

One of the things I love most about your videos is that it shows how thoughtful you are with the characters. Turning Jake into a provisioner, giving him time to mature (and probably some much needed separation from his family), then after some time, returning him home shows a large amount of kindness and concern. You're a good settlement leader to be so invested in the lives of those in your 'care'.

Yancey was the firstborns name in frys family, oxhorn if you havnt already look into Futurama all deep like, it explores some deep morality, and even has its very own language and alphabet, very cool

I installed a zombie mod that turns feral ghouls and other creatures into TWD type zombies. I saved the kid and met him by the overpass, but then suddenly I failed the mission. A bunch of ghouls stormed the settlement and killed everyone.

Slag might be from the Pitt. Remember the raiders there were also using the place as a steel manufacturing powerhouse. Which could explain Slag’s name, the ruthlessness of his recruitment, and the fact that him and his men are holed up in an old steel processing facility.

Great job on including the real life ironworks, Oxhorn. I, too, set Jake up as a provisioner, and let him get some adventuring in. Shishkebab sits back hanging up at the farm after doing some good with it for Gramps.

I walked up to behind Slag when he was threatening Jake, shot out his fusion core, stole his power armor, gave the chest piece a "flames" paint job, and it now resides at Finch Farm as a trophy or for usage during the next settlement attack.

I had a tremendous amount of fun building on the Finch Farm, because the build area is tall enough to reach the overpass. I put a town on the overpass with an observation deck at the highest point providing some of the best views in the game. Pretty well-defended piece of real estate considering its proximity to both Raiders and Gunners.

Daniel Finch is one of the named settlers that has a separate cap account, hence if you make him a trader by assigning it to a stall he will have his own inventory, including caps. The other two are Connie Abernathy and June Warwick at the eponymous farms. Most settlers that can be assigned to stalls do not have their own inventory, meaning when you drain the caps from one, it will also drain the caps from every other settler assigned to a similar stall type. Named recruitable settlers can also have the same issue: Vault-Tec Representative and Tina deLuca most preeminently.

I just redid this quest. I skipped a lore terminal and thought to my self "if I were here for lore, I'd watch an oxhorn video." I said nothing out loud and this is on my recommended the next time I open KZfaq. It literally read my mind and I'm actually scared

I say he comes from the Pitt - Pittsburgh from that Fallout 3 DLC (which was the coolest in my opinion!). It's a perfect match. It was an incredibly cruel and ruthless place and it was all about metal, industry and flames.

I didn't get this quest at the farm but ran across the map and found Saagus when I went in there I got a Searing Shishekebab without knowing how much history it had.

Well I did this quest for the minutemen and watching your video made me realize I missed the bobblehead and the magazine.

It wouldn't surprise me if Slag was from Pittsburgh, The Pitt in the Fallout universe. His obsession with strength as well as the general factory and fire theme seems to go well with that, as in FO3 The Lone Wanderer cleared out the raiders in The Pitt (I'm assuming that's the Canon ending) and cured the sickness. Slag is probably one of those that survived after Asher died and left. The entire quest with the Finch farm as well as how Slag behaves and how the forged behave really seem to fit with The Pit from FO3. Either way, great vid Ox, As always :)

5:29 I think the Minutemen existed at that time, only just before the Sole Survivor woke up did they cease to exist, that's why you may meet them at Concord. As it was a recent event.
