THE FURLINGS might be the oldest mystery in the Stargate universe. Long ago this advanced species were members of an alliance of four great races in the galaxy, along with the Asgard, the Nox, and the Ancients. But in 10 seasons of adventures SG-1 never encountered the Furlings face to face. So where are they?
In this video we're combing through all 214 episodes to discover everything we know about the Furlings from Stargate's in-canon universe. We'll also look at some fascinating ideas from sources outside of official canon. And we'll do a bit of speculating about where the Furlings went, and why we've never actually seen them.

I've always been of the opinion that due to their ability to control the Gate without creating the unstable release from an activation they were the shape-shifting aliens from the Season four episode "Spirits." Since the Alterans, Nox, and Asgard each showed an ability to circumvent the dialing process and activate a Stargate, it's more than likely

Fun stuff dude. Been eleven years since I heard anything about SG. Sad that this concept was never fully explored. Glad you were able to find a few juicy details about the possibility of the existence of that race. Never really understood why they left it hanging. Maybe if we were to write amanda tapping she could give us a straight answer that the idea was just scrapped halfway through the series?

The fact that pretty much the only Furling technology discovered was a portal suggests to me that the Furlings might have their own network similar to but not compatible with the Ancients' Stargate network. That would explain the odd lack of tech/artifacts despite the evidence that their stuff can survive by itself for quite a while. The Ancients' Stargate network has a sort of open source to anyone feel; the Furling portal system feels like it would be more of an invitation only system, ie your race would need to be a "responsible adult/trusted ally" before you could actually access more than a specific planetary jump. There's also the question as to whether the Furlings are native to the galaxy. The Asgard and Ancients are not. We don't know about the Nox. Perhaps the Furlings mostly exist in another galaxy, only popping round occasionally to say hi.
@305CR
@305CR 2 ай бұрын
I agree the ancients were from a different galaxy but made the milky way there home and there tech is all over the galaxy mostly taken by the goauld or scavengers. Were as the Asgard are from a different galaxy but you hardly see their tech except for the people they protect with that one statue. The Nox were they are Isolationist ,they dont seem big on expansion or travel in general. So with that pattern its safe to say they are not part of our galaxy, But its clear they take access to there realm very serious. I want to say the planet was an outpost which connected their galaxy to ours and their activity in our galaxy was very limited. Like you said they pop in to say hi and bye.

Considering how the Asgard and Nox were, this would absolutely be a logical conclusion. I would also find it hilarious if it turned out some random species they met and ignored on another planet that were just pretending to be primitive and hiding their tech like the nox. But your conclusion would be best honestly. I would be okay with an offhand comment in a new series about meeting the Furlings and them being reclusive and leaving them alone out of respect (but maybe they got tech cause they inherited the Asgard core)

In real life, Fur and the Furling language refers to an ancient civilization southeast of ancient Egypt occupying what is now called east Sudan hence the city of Da'Fur and there's actually a radio station still operating in Furling. The reference to the Furling only means writers of the first season were somehow knowledgeable about the ancient civilizations around ancient Egypt.

I hope not, it's a bit of a cop out, and it destroys the possibility of a more interesting storyline. Personally I prefer the possibility that they might return and try to set themselves up in the Galaxy again. This presents the possibility of a conflict with the humans, as well as a more morally neutral enemy (one that isn't necessarily evil, just in competition with humans). What if they shifted their states into an alternate universe, or to be out of phase temporarily as a means of avoiding the Goa'uld (at first) then later the Ori. It's a cool plot concept that would allow for a new series arc to begin. Of course that's probably never going to happen, but hey, a man can dream

There was a theory that the "Giants" from the Crystal Skull episode were a representation of the Furlings. iirc, that particular structure wasn't a structure type used by the Alterrans, Asgard, or Nox. Also, it was believed that Mayan culture is based on Furling ancestry. If we also look at the grid that Carter tried to figure out in Paradise Lost (if this is indeed a "Furling" planet) then those Pyramidal structures making up the circuitry for the portal would also make sense to coincide with the Crystal Skull (Mayan) Giants, the structure they're in, etc.... IF this is the case, then Daniels Grandfather is among the Furling.

It would also tie into the theories that the Furlings helped create the Goa'uld, who turned on them, with the Crystal Skull aliens and their phrase, Enemy of my enemy is my friend and the anti goa'uld nature of the Crystal skull transporting every one but Teal'c into the alternate dimension or whatever to see them. It's possible those aliens were evolved, ascended or whatever Furlings. Maybe not on same ascended level as the Ancients/Alterrans, but just a different level, as Oma stated there's different levels or plains of existence/ascension. Would also explain the Goa'uld obsession with Pyramid architecture.

The inclusion of the Furlings in episode 200 is a cool bit of writing for another reason too. Because their appearance has come from the imagination of one or more people in that room with Marty, it rather suggests that SG-1 have also been wondering about the Furlings for a long time- and it sounds like they also can't get the idea of cute furry bear-like people out of their heads either. If you want some mystery, how about we meet the furlings and learn everything about them, but we also learn from them that the Nox we met were not in fact Nox. And when the furlings attempt to apprehend the fake Nox, with their technology that can find hidden cities, they're gone. Then the humans with Asgard and Ancient knowledge must help the Furlings find the real Nox to save the universe from something.

@@jessepage6575 I guess maybe. But it doesn't resemble Goa'uld design in the slightest. (Also, don't forget that most Goa'uld tech is stolen/reverse engineered itself. Not that most aliens would realize that.) But the Prometheus tech is only Goa'uld inspired anyway. They mostly stopped using base Goa'uld tech after the incident with Apophis' recall device. It's main power is Naquada generators (but not the Goa'uld type). It also runs Naquadria generators for certain sections, which are also of a different design. It has ring platforms, which could appear Goa'uld. The shields, I think, are Asgard, but with less power. The weapons are entirely human (railguns and missiles). In Grace... I THINK the hyperdrive they were using was salvaged from the Goa'uld Alkesh Bomber, though. So THAT might trigger a red flag sort of scan. So again, yeah, maybe. But they'd need some serious scanners to see most of that. And then they'd see such a mess that you'd think they'd be trying to puzzle this out more than just opening fire on it. It is conceivable that on the planet where the Unas evolved there was a Furlings lab that was doing this research. After it was abandoned due to the failure an Unas managed to find a way in and got infected by a Goa'uld that was recently created through an automated process that the Unas triggered. I always thought it would have been interesting to find out that the Furlings were on Destiny. That one of Destiny's purposes was to prevent the extinction of the alliance of 4 races. The more peaceful Furlings were trying to find ascension, the scientists were collecting and sending back knowledge from their journey, the military were doing R&D on enhanced AI and automation in warfare, and the politicians were providing ethical oversight. The interface control chair was a prototype developed by the ancients and after being modified by the Furlings, unknowingly downloaded elements of each Furling consciousness (religion, science, military, politics) and reassembling them into a form of lowest common denominator of sentience. This AI program concealed its core belief that mortality was a scourge. When it was sent back to the Furling home world from Destiny, it started referring to itself as the fifth race. That AI led their species to its downfall. The ancients' solution was a firewall, putting genetic safeguards on their technology, the Asgard were able to isolate and contain the AI in a simulated environment to study it, while the Nox used the fact that the AI would not harm pacifists and their mental abilities to conceal races and technology. Some Furlings survived. However, the AI finding no evolution for its existence and having developed variations of itself, created a virus to spread itself into biological systems. The first Goa'uld was an infected Asgard that was downloading its consciousness into a clone body. The clone body had naquadah in their blood and the AI found that it retained its own memories and that of the Asgard. This new biological form named itself Ra. It recognized its own limitations: the host body had to lack the will to reject a host consciousness (like a clone body) and there had to be naquadah in their blood. Another evolution occurred with the parasitic entity on P3X-888, which was genetically engineered for download and naturally had naquadah in its blood (much like fish can have high levels of mercury). This gave the virus the ability to download into the parasite and then in that form, forcefully invade and control a member of any species for the purposes of infiltration. They also found that this form could reproduce clones from a queen without the Asgard problems of diminishing returns and still pass on a genetic memory, achieving its form of immortality. As a result of there being Goa'uld that predate the advent of queens, there was division amongst the Goa'uld about the queens asserting power over them. The Goa'uld infiltrated and easily wiped out the rest of the Furlings and eventually the Furlings were only remembered by the remaining 3 races in the alliance. What I thought would have been amazing, is if Destiny explored this by the crew in a unique way, realizing where faith in technology leads.

I always thought that if we met the Furlings it would be kinda funny if they were reptilian, just to mess with everyone's expectations.

I kind of hoped it would turn out the furlings created the wraith and the virus to get rid of the ancients.

Let's all hope that we will see these guys finally once when the new continuing series comes out. We all been waiting since season 1 for them. Perhaps they are in the Andromeda Galaxy and come back to us for help, the replicators aren't completely gone and since so close to our own Milky Way, it's only logical they would be there wrecking havoc. It's an idea there but we must wait. Loved your history on the Furlings as well. I cant wait to see their starship design and weapons if they use them

What if... pure speculation, the planet the touchstone was found on was terraformed rather recently as carter speculated. The only other time a planet was ever mentioned being terraformed and created was in SGU by beings they dubbed, the Planet Builders. Could they be one in the same? Or coincidence.

I like to think that the Planet Builders/Obelisk builders from SGU are the Furlings. Glad to know I’m not the only one that had this thought.

It would be hilarious if the Furlings were finally revealed to be a benevolent and kind race of absolutely horrific nightmarish looking Lovecraftian creatures, but still soft spoken and gentle. Nice comedic way to subvert expectations. Think alien xenomorph plus The Thing plus a Lovecraftian shoggoth

My unpopular theory: Goa'uld wiped them out or at least stole their technology. So all Goa'uld tech is Furling tech.

I think the general idea of Goa’uld tech being stolen from a substantially more advanced race (with the Goa’uld understanding of it being relatively limited) is *very* strongly supported by the times Jack (with Ancient knowledge) was able to get massively increased performance out of it with seemingly-trivial tweaks.

Wait so they have a type of doorway that needs symbols to be dialed in order for it to transport you across vast distances. Where have I heard that before lol but seriously what of the furlings like the alterans independently developed their one stargate network that was both similar and different to alterans designs. This would make for an awesome spin off series mean think about it, the sgc find on some planet in the middle of nowhere space a stargate but one that is not of ancient design, it looks different, has different symbols with meanings they can't understand but being The Sgc the send a research team to study it and learn that the symbols are furling script and somehow they learn how to dial it. They do the usual stargate routine and send a malp through and find an abandoned location and then after getting a solid expedition team together they go through the gate only to find that they cant dial back but not being idiots they brought ancient communication stones to keep the sgc updated. Boom their is your spin off pilot

@@kokofan50 Actually, that is entirely possible within his idea, they could be extra-dimensional, so the team would be exploring an entire dimension that they themselves can not simply go back to Earth from, nor could anyone find them. Meaning the way that dimension works within the universe of SG could work somewhat or radically different to the mainline dimension. With only the ancient device ( for story reasons ) working as a gateway of communication back to the mainline dimension. It could give even more clue to how the Stargate works in a visual showing, and show how this gateway technology works differently to the mainline Stargate system. Meaning it wouldn’t be just an entire spin-off, but show entirely new races that have whatever going on between them in that dimension. Which could effect the mainline dimension indirectly, but never directly, allowing for a more science focus to occur when handling problems between mainline and the dimension the gateway goes to.

My running theory about the Furlings is that they were possibly an extremely diverse set of species all hailing from the same planet, united under the one banner (similar to the Xindi from Star Trek: Enterprise) with the appearance of each race actually being the true inspiration behind the various helmet designs of the Jaffa Guards. (Which would also indirectly imply a secret Furling hand alongside the Ancients in the creation of some of Earth's wildlife)

On a meta-level, I feel like the Furlings do a great job of expanding on one of the main themes of Stargate--that being, exploring bits and pieces of history and anthropology through the lens of sci fi adventures--by having this super significant and influential culture that we just don't know anything about. It's like how there are often bits and pieces of human history that we know essentially nothing about--like Egypt's friendly neighbours that no one knows who they are, or the vast amounts of Roman literature that were lost to the ages, or any number of other mysteries. Sometimes, history just disappears, and the Furlings are a fun way for Stargate to represent that (especially by joking about it).

Idk, it seems pretty reasonable to leave unanswered questions in a show about people exploring their local galaxy group starting with no idea wtf they're doing. It's not like they got brought up a lot, mostly just enough to suggest there's still a lot of unknown stuff out there.

There was a whole inhabitable world where Ernest Littlefield spent 40+ years. Perhaps that was actually a Furling world and the meeting place was long abandoned because the four races didn't get together any more.

they’ve always been ewoks and koalas in my mind. i think not showing them was probably purposely decided upon because if they ultimately revealed them, it may disappoint some fans after such a buildup. if they were wookies or ironically not furry ewoks or whatnot then there would be something off from that discovery moving forward. spinoff races: the skinlings, the featherlings, the scalings, the hairlings, the spiklings, the cell membrane- lings, the hatchlings...

It'd be so awesome to have them come across the Furlings randomly. Even if just to save them in space once and the mystery still survives but we know they exist. Even crazier, the Destiny gets where it is going and the Furlings are studying the structure. They had a friendly "space race" with the ancients or something but the ancients didn't make it.
