Yeap...I'm 33. When I was 25 i started my first 401k (as pensions are a myth, an old legend we still hear fairy tales about) and by their calculations, I would need to save 1.8 MILLION to maintain what was my current level of income at the time. Which was NOT a livable wage. 8 years in the future and that original 401k is gone, before I was even able to accumulate $5,000 and I've since started up a new 401k...and I don't expect this one to last either. I doubt I'll be able to retire in 30 years.

The problem isn't culture, it's demographics. There are more old people than younger working ones. The working generation can't generate enough money to keep up with the demand of the elder ones. In Malaysia on the other hand, the biggest part of the population is under 40 years old. So it's not a problem there. At least it's none at the moment. But it's very likely that Malaysia will face the same problem sooner or later.

I planned to work til 74 from the time I started saving at 20 because I wanted to work only part time. Inclusion Body Myositis is a muscle destroying disease that is under recognized, untreatable and can change your life as it did mine. Haven't been able to work 2yrs but live on $600/mo in house I bought for cash when collapse hit, use only used cars under $5k. My point: acquire skills, get things that work for you not impress others, eat less and learn to cook it,guard your health carefully don't count on someone fixing it later, be gentle with all people because everyone is going through something. I am so glad I wove the things I loved into my life early on not assuming I could do all the juicy wonderful things later because now at 61, hiking, biking, crosscountry skiing, hostelling in Europe are not possible. LIVE your life with joy, frugally,so that no matter what comes as you age you can be warm, safe and do something meaningful.

Being a citizen of Europe we of course tackle with the same problems that come with a post-industrial age. Yet I find it shocking that so many Americans will be living in poverty. People should have a choice if they want to work in their 60s and 70s; it shouldn't be mandatory to survive. In contrast, there has been a growing discourse in European countries over the last few years that argues that the population will need a universal basic income instead of having to work to death. In an automated world, it is questionable if we have to work as long anymore as we currently do. The title therefore seems to be a bit misleading and should be called "The Future of Aging in America"
@Qznews
@Qznews 5 жыл бұрын
True, some people feel forced to work for longer periods before retirement (if they ever retire), but there is also a story here about people who want to work, or rather, want to contribute to society long after the expected retirement age. With longer life expectancy this trend towards wanting to stay engaged in work and society seems more universal regardless of finances.
@w3bst3r123
@w3bst3r123 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but it seemed to me that a lot of those people portrayed in the video will reach a breaking point when their bodies can't sustain their lifestyle anymore. The low level of financial security at an higher age is therefore a real problem (in almost every country) that could be mitigated by having a better social contract with society. @@Qznews

@@shilpanshukla5070 Nah, the benefits of curing aging far outweigh its adverse effects. People always use overpopulation as the counter argument but that's exactly what our ancestors did too against improving health care. They have failed to realize that if people are healthier, their dependencies on children decreases dramatically. Let's also not forget about infant mortality rate. If people don't age, same thing is going to happen except more radically this time. Babies will be extremely rare in the future. Oh btw, curing aging is nowhere close to immortality. There are countless ways for young people to die.

It's very risky to solely rely on savings. Because say you save the equivalent of $1 million dollars. That's a lot, right? But because of inflation, by the time you're 60 - in 30 years, say - that might be worth far less. Especially if the country where you're saving is hit by a hyperinflation crisis, then your savings could well be made null and void fairly quickly. And yea, a hyperinflation crisis may seem unlikely, but they do happen and given how many potential issues countries as 'developed' as the US face, there's a good chance it happens. More importantly, it only needs to happen once for your life savings to be totally wiped away. The US, for instance, is entirely dependent on the Dollar being the world's chief and ubiquitous currency, but given that Russia, China and other countries want to move away from it, that will have a massive impact on the US' insanely immense national debt, which in turn has a significant effect on the world as a whole, as well as everyone's savings. That's not that far-fetched an idea, and the US' two biggest crises in the past (Great Depression & Recession) came from parts of their system they thought were infallible, much as they think of their national debt. This is essentially a long way of saying be careful of thinking your life savings are sure to survive the decades ahead. The people in this video clearly did and the future seems even more ambiguous and volatile now than it did then.

Complex subject. Different countries have different retirement systems. We don't know what will happen in 30 or 40 years but in the medium term it is unavoidable that people work longer. I think part-time job and smaller pensions could be a good alternative. At 65 one can have valuable professional experience but one won't have the energy or the motivation to work full-time in a stressful job. So companies could use the experience these people can transmit to younger ones and the government could spare money if part-time work was a reality for older people.
@brandonn.1275

Not exactly a viable answer once one considers that not everybody will have a valuable experience nor capacity to tech newer generations of workers and then there are problems created by automation making low-skilled and certain high skilled jobs a thing of the past. In a contest who would a medical diagnostician with 20-40 years of experience reading at most 20-30 pieces of medical literature a month or an AI capable of instantly leveraging the total sum of mankind's medical knowledge while also instantly integrating the hundreds of medical papers being published everyday and tailoring that information into an individual by individual statistical model of the best course of treatment options. These kinds of AIs have gotten so good that they can identify the surivival rate of ER patients to an incredible degree of accuracy within a 24 hour period.

For the millennia we raise our kids, we know if we don't support them, don't rise them in the right way there will be no one to look after us when we become old. Now we have this fake sense of security we pay taxes and we expect to get a pension. A lot of us don't invest in the kids or are to busy to do it. We should back to the roots where we raise our kids in the best way we possibly can. If you are good for your kids they will appreciate this and reward us in the future, if you will be a bad parent, they will not help and we will die, Its called natural selection. Our societies work this way for thousands of years till now where we have a pension.

How is it that human wealth has vastly eclipsed growth in human population and yet more and more of us are driven in top poverty and work into retirement. There is a very important question we aren't asking here. What can we do as a society to manage economic growth so we all enjoy it and it isn't hoarded by a select few. Maybe we have to also release this belief that rich people are some how godly or even just more deserving.

There's a lot wrong with this video. As far as I'm concerned an economy that exploits older people and lets them live in poverty is an economy not worth keeping around. We need a new economy. And we also need to reverse aging rather than accepting it. Through medical interventions we can accomplish this. Like those proposed by SENS Research Foundation.

I think that this video overlooks a crucial part when they say that millennials starting to work will struggle growing old. It is true that this will be a problem in the future, but most probably short to middle-term. The big issue is that "baby boomers", which represents a considerable part of the workforce, are entering retirement force. In the future, however, the balance should equilibrate. In part because the age distribution will flatten and in part the retirement age will go up. The ratio working/non working will not be as dramatic in 20/30/40 years as in 10 years.

People.growing older is a crisis! As "retirement age" folks fail to retire, due to poor financial planning or a 'want to stay productive,' they prevent newer, younger people from entering the workforce with a liveable wage and/or make it harder for young people to enter the work force at all. They get paid more and more, costing companies extraordinary amount of money, and prevent younger people just entering the work force from earning liveable wages, blocking them from getting promoted. I see it at my job now. It's a mid sized family own business, and when it started in the 70s, the young workers earned enough money to buy house and raise families....and a majority of those people still work here, old a decrepit. The younger folks who are just starting make very little money, certainly not enough to own a home or to even think about starting a family.

The argument that aging is right is a fallacy, its an appeal to nature, which is illogical because just because something is natural or happens in nature, does not mean we have to follow it. It seems that we will increase our lifespans heavily in this next century, with predictions assuming that it could very well be that people living today may have an indefinite lifespan for the future. Aging is technically not a biological process but rather one of physics. Also no one in the history of mankind has ever died of old age, but rather an organ failure or disease. The thing is that with new medicine and stem cells we have the potential to change this and let people live longer and longer healthy lives. That means that things like wrinkly skin, heart problems, alzheimers and other age related diseases will be a thing of the past. If you want to know more about this and how its happening I suggest you watch any of Aubrey de Grey's ted talks.

Where are their children...here in India, we have this culture of taking care of our elder ones, when they retire from their jobs....there are very few exceptions though....but in general, we are consciously aware of our familial obligations...I am 36 and trying to save enough money so that I don't have to depend upon my children but they r watching, me taking care of my parents...so they too know that tomorrow, it will be expected from them too...and I see no reason that they will fail me when I am old....😊😊

Why can't old people stay with their children. Can help them at home. Can take care of their children enjoy an happy life. I grew up with my grandparents it's common in India to live in joint family. How can their children see their parents living in a van. They sacrified a lot for you.

because in america culture is different when you're young you're expected to leave your family as soon as you end high school and after living separated for 30-40 years most people don't want to move in with their parents a lot people barely want to even talk with them EDIT: they also have their own family now

Advice giving needs to be a job through companies and through entrepreneurs as well included in that as well charging people money for advice is one of the things that old people one of the jobs they can actually do just learn about wise things teach it to people for a fee just start educational websites through the person making videos giving advice to random people about random things also patreon and advertisement companies would help in this and you can make the websites cost monthly fees if you're that desperate

Nomadic life is not the answer, though :( But most people don't want to be taxed! That money is to help each other.....at least in non-corrupt places. Oiy....it just ain't going to end. Unless we're able to weed out the materialistic, selfish ones. Then from there, build Or Identify those that are benevolent, financially responsible, gregarious, environmentalists and help Them thrive amongst their like-minded.

Nanoha Fate you dont live in california huh? Well if you did you would notice the state drying up. And yes this could be just a very long drought, but when you start seeing 110 degrees on the beach. There is something definitely wrong. The beach where water is should never be that hot. Global warming has an exponential effect. Natural disasters are natural, always happen but the strengths are increased by the effects of global warming with an exponential effect.
