I would much rather invest in a small team of creators than a huge studio where the business too often stifles voices and creativity. What you are all doing truly will push the animation medium to the next level BECAUSE the opportunity is given to those who have unique voices. It’s a super awesome time to be a creator in this day and age.

This idea is amazing but might have some severe downfalls. For one, cryptocurrency is not regulated. This can become an issue in itself. People might be placing bets on content thinking that they will get rich easy. Important financial warnings should be developed. Secondly, if the fans dislike the show or any form of controversy is generated the value is lost. A sufficiently large number of saboteurs could also destroy the show. Everyone who works on this project: Animators, producers, artists, writers all lose their job. Thirdly, the creators might be unable to tell their stories if the fans constantly force them to change their works for fan service. Finally, the freedom of this platform could be a double-edged sword. It could allow for evil content with horrible messages which end up paradoxically leading to ideas that are intolerant of others. Nevertheless, I would love to see this succeed, albeit for a selfish reason. I am an engineering student that does not have time to dedicate myself to writing stories. I have been meaning to write engineering themed stories. This may not be popular with large studios but could work quite well with this type of platform. I wish this comment could be reviewed by Mr Becker to see his take on this issue.

I'd love to see the story Ethan is talking about of the kid leaving his siblings behind, as much as it would be hard to watch. I have never seen that represented in any media I've watched in a way that actually digs into the complexities of that decision. It was one of the hardest thing I've ever had to do personally, because as the oldest sibling you feel like the parent in place of the absent parent, so when you leave you feel like you are abandoning your siblings. When you know what you are leaving them to deal with, there is a guilt that will never leave until the day you die, because that decision won't just change your life but theirs as well. One of my sisters just turned 18 and is moving out of that house, and I've almost begged her not to because she would be leaving our youngest sibling their by herself for a few years. I realized though that as the first to leave, and how important it was for me to get out, I didn't have the audacity to ask her to stay and protect our sister in exchange for her young adult years that she'll never get back having to act as a parent and protector. Being able to see that story from the perspective of the first that chose to leave would be the closest thing representing my life that I've ever seen. How this character comes to this decision, how they deal with the guilt, how their siblings react, who cuts them off and who understands, if they are ever forgiven or can forgive themselves, how the way they had to grow up early affects their adult life, etc is something I'd really be interested to see. I hope this and the other ideas discussed can come to fruition. It's great to see artists and animators stand up and take possession of their creativity to just make cool and real shit.

It's one of the main things I latched onto as well. I was the oldest and I grew up in an abusive household too. It was the most difficult decision to accept, to leave my family for the moment and go off to grad school. My advisor said it was for the best, I needed to do this for my personal growth, but everytime my sister called in anguish about something going on back home, I was filled with so much guilt for taking the "easy way out". People told me I shouldn't feel guilty and responsible but would they say the same thing if they were in my place? Would they feel no guilt abandoning a sibling who's as much a victim as myself, the person who best understands the anguish our parents left me with because she was there too? I'm so excited for Ethan and these projects. I latched onto Steven universe when it was coming out because it tackled a lot of tough relationship issues between friends and family that was rarely talked about at the time. It helped me cope and work through my own issues too. Stories like these are valuable.

As a youngest, I had my elder brother went out of emotionally crippling household first. I personally was so happy for him (also meant a little bit space, I got his old room before that I didn't really had anywhere in the house to go) but also vastly envious. I had some of my worst fears came true after he left but honestly I don't think I can blame him since he can earn money now and can help with my education fees (my parents aren't well off) so it is definitely worked out okay. I hope someday to follow in his footsteps and leave honestly.

What’s interesting is for me as another first born, is that thankfully I never grew up in an abusive household. My dad did, or he was around it a lot and as an African American witnessed firsthand all the stuff Ethan’s going to cover in Delinquents. Including on growing up after the kings riots in Washington DC and the crack epidemic. But because if my dads experiences, he taught me about them so I would understand the struggle our people and family went through so I wouldn’t forget. But I feel this overwhelming sense of survivors guilt for not being “a part of it”. I hear all these terrible things and know they still happen. People I love, and people with so much potential, like all the characters in Delinquents, go through these experiences every day. And my dad did an excellent job of protecting me from it, but because of that I feel a sort of isolation. By no means am I saying I want to go through any of those traumatic experiences. It’s just difficult as an artist for me to try to convey my experiences in a realistic way when it’s an experience only I have or share with a few. Literally only one other person I know who I feel experiences what I do. If I’m being honest, it’s really that I’m afraid people won’t understand me because they haven’t in the past. My life is just so different culturally then all the other people I’ve met. Despite all that I want to share what can come despite the trauma that has happened in the past. I started drawing so other people could see what I thought was cool, but how can I if no one understands my experiences. Like people understand what Ethan’s writing because it’s happened so much, it’s unfortunately a part of our culture. It’s real. For some reason my own experiences feel more like a fictional show then his does. Please respond if you feel compelled to. This is something I’ve been thinking about for the longest time. I’ve been working on using words to convey my feelings and I’d love to hear another humans interpretation. Hopefully someone out there can resonate with this.

the sad part tho is that the projects that are rejected by studios for being too dark or graphic don't really have a high chance to ever air on TV or something of sorts and it'll most probably be downplayed people like it was for 'perfect blue' so this'll be quite a hotspot for amazing ideas and animations, i'll try my best and look foward to it

Well, that’s because in the west, until recently, animated series were mainly for children, so it makes sense why the content can’t be grimderp and excessively graphic. But also, I don’t like that shit much in animation. I think it’s a cop out like modern horror, replacing good story telling with cheap shock value and graphic scenes. Maybe some of that can be brought in once you establish a GOOD story, as seasoning, but it kinda sounds like you’re just into super graphic and dark stuff for the sake of it. Good stories are good because they’re well written, not because they’re dark and graphic.
@papo3887

@@zenthulhuofficial3947 This 100%, even before I got into writing I noticed and felt that. An "adult" show to me really just means uncensored. Censorship ironically is the biggest reason western comic/animation has been behind Japan since arguably the late 80's. The only arbitrary censorship you can't really get past over there is fully depicting genitals (even then, it's a law), and they have like 2 genres dedicated to getting away with as much as possible on that front. America and europe industry is extremely repressive by comparison, but then the few who escape and find independance in the internet cash in on the shock value from being uncensored rather than make a compelling story that can rival popular anime/manga. Whoever can combine the color and quality from the west with the creativity and variety from japan will rule comics/animation for decades to come. (please somebody take out marvel and D/C already)

I agree. That one is going to be absolutely banging in the most important ways. The other shows they were talking about really are the kinds of shows i wish MY SON could watch beacuse he just doesn't get things because he's in or relates to situations like these but doesn't understand what to do or how to feel about them because shows like these don't exist. I am so damn excited to see these made and as long as the characters are portrayed right which it sounds like they will be, i'll be so happy to have my kids watch them. It's time the world stopped sheltering the innocent from evil like this when so many innocents are already introduced to this evil.
@studiovulcan4411
@studiovulcan4411 2 жыл бұрын
I hate seeing shows where I see a relatable situation for a character but then that character is super bratty or has attitude you wouldn't condone and so it's a 50/50 character. They have some things that could help, but other things you wouldn't want your kids to be like and then you're left wondering if you really want them relating to the characters at all. It was unnecessary charcater filling that didn't really make sense. Or rather, there's no opportunities showing the charcaters that they should grow out of those behaviours and are instead leaned into for more entertainment purposes, it's stupid.

(edit: bro im so sorry i had no idea it’d turn out to be this long ghjkajalsk, uh anyway, have fun reading? theres a tldr at the bottom ig) Yes! It’s understandable that it may be too daunting to get into something so emotionally taxing, or too ‘real’. But sometimes (to me anyway) it’s comforting to watch and read a character struggling through a chaotic environment and taking the audience through a journey of their hardships, only to find that in the end, life is life; it’s unpredictable, sometimes there isn’t even a ‘good end’, the conflict forever unsolved, ongoing, and much more that gives the work it’s ‘harsh reality’. Personally because of this, I feel that works like these also have the potential to challenge people on their current perspectives on life and provide a new one- just something to leave them hanging on, like some sort of fucked up ‘food for thought.’ The topics mentioned here (Ethan’s notably) is iffy for me, especially growing up in a relatively healthy environment where I haven’t experienced this kind of tragedy, but I’d love to read it solely because it’s new. Many stories and entertainment have been sugarcoated in attempt appeal to the larger demographic; I can’t exactly list or describe it- something like how in almost every story (keyword: almost), the characters would always choose the ‘right decision’ morally which, in a kerfuffle of plot and events, leads to some grand ending. But when Ethan talked about that snippet of his life, his ‘right decision’- it may be far from ‘morally right’ to leave his siblings, but he too was a victim. It’s not everyday you hear that side of the story of where instead of staying for them like some big hero, he’s gone elsewhere, and left them to who knows what. It made him feel and sound so human. anywho that’s just my really, really unnecessarily long take on it lmao- tldr: what u said but fatt

Animation is SUPER expensive, is it really going to be viable to make enough through crowdfunding? I think in concept this is a really great idea, especially with the way animators are overworked and underpaid. If it's true that even a single episode can take ~$250,000 to make, i have a hard time imagining the funding would be met for anything more than a few episodes long. In either case, it'll be very interesting and important to see where a project like this goes.

if they at least get enough money to make a successful pilot...it shows that they have an audience...then it's more likely to get picked up by Netflix or such as is...the problem with studios is that they never want to take a chance on things that could fail...so they try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible but if they get a project that has a built-in audience, it's less risky cuz it guarantees those views...for example, Cannon Busters and Yasuke wouldn't have happened if LeSean went directly to studios...he needed it to get crowdfunded in order to show its worth

@@FlauFly I... don't think that's true? The budget doesn't care what the drawings are about, it cares how many you're doing and how much time you're spending on them. That isn't defined by genre, it's defined by aesthetic. You can have a realistic story with minimal animation as much as you can have a sci-fi story with high quality animation.
@FlauFly
@FlauFly 2 жыл бұрын
@@lttim Yeah, I agree with you that budget doesn't change much with genre, but rather with aesthetic. But that's my whole point. You need to use the same budget doing realistic story and completely bonkers fantasy/science-fiction. With live action movies/shows it doesn't work like that and realistic story is way way cheaper than science-fiction/fantasy, especially if there is much fantastic elements.

YES! I hope projects like this will be a stop to the crippling censorship studios love to do ("to protect children"). Especially western studios and consumers often miss the fact that animation isn't a genre for children, but a medium for every possible genre. I'd love to see (and maybe even work on) animation with adult themes like drama, love, sex, violence, social issues preferably combined with dystopian or fantasy themes and written by women (sorry men, I know some of you create excellent stuff I also enjoy, but I'd love more animation from and for grown women). For example I loved Manga growing up but haven't resonated too much with most animes we got in the west bc the vast majority is/was boys anime with often questionable female representation, magical girls or watered down stuff to cater to a male or conservative audience as well. Even as a kid I loved dramatic stories with death, trauma, romance and a sprinkle of fantasy (thinking about anime like Inuyasha or X/1999, which btw got basically cancelled bc of the violence in it 😡)

I have a TON of thoughts/questions about fractional shares on these projects that I wanted to share, so bear with me for a minute. Does each project organize under its own LLC with shares available? What percentage of shares will be available for each project (assuming less than 50%); Are you free to withdraw your investment and interest at any time? I don't want you guys to get in trouble with the SEC (watch the movie The Polka King to see what I mean) because I want to see these projects get made! Also, would you be open to taking on collaborators and paying them a royalty, the same as music distributors like Distrokid offer? I'd be happy to contribute labor in the form of clean-up, color, in-betweens, etc. as an industry outsider for some credit and royalty checks or shares as a bonus (as I'm sure many, many others would as well).

Those are my concerns too. They mostly talked about their motivations for making this platform, which is great and I can relate to a lot, but I have seen a lot of projects that seem like a revolutionary idea go up in flames because the business and legal sides weren't taken into consideration enough. The big red flag here is that, by implying they are selling actual partial ownership of the ips, if things go south, there are a lot more people in the boat with them suddenly who might not have been aware of the risks this whole deal has. There is also stuff like "who owns the copyright" and "who is liable in case of fraudulent behavior" also what consumer protection is in place, who can pitch projects on their site? Is it open for all? Are there any background checks? What if someone decides to exploit the site to make a quick buck like they do with other crowd founding sites? Who is actually in charge of the finances? Do the individual creators manage this? Is there any support for new creators to make sure they don't mismanage the money? There are a lot of questions that don't really get answered here

Audiences and employees both expecting more from the big companies because of the good competition these independent ones provide. I mainly want more info about project city and what it actually entails. Where will these projects be viewed? Where does the revenue come from once the project is complete and broadcast? I have to say, the timing of this is perfect after we just got blessed with League of Legend’s latest series, Arcane. That kind of art direction, animation, and story-telling is something we need to see more of. I was wondering how can we get producers and people at the top to realize that people want to see more of this, and not some “scooby-doo” cartoon (much love to them), but we want some real serious stuff too! There’s so much talent out there, and yet it’s not being used to its full potential. Project City seems to be a way we can finally get these beautifully animated, well-written stories to come to life.
@riddlewrong
@riddlewrong 2 жыл бұрын
Arcane is a bad example for a couple of reasons. It has an entire brand behind the IP which has appeared in a number of products over the course of more than a decade. It has a huge built-in fanbase and is a property owned by a very successful company. The entire point of this video is that they're trying to produce great, original work that DOESN'T have that sort of thing -- the stuff studios don't want to gamble on because it has no basis in an established IP or fanbase, and therefore is a complete unknown quantity in terms of potential success and profit. Arcane is not even remotely in that category.

I have concerns about this on the practical side of things: Firstly, this would make sense and seem doable if you guys were doing an anthology series, but like 4-5 animated series at once? Unless you're just creating pitch bibles to pitch to studios, I don't think this will last. Maybe films would work as well, but full on series is hard to pull off for small teams. Secondly, if people are putting money into this, then we should have some idea of when your projects will meet their deadlines, no? That way, there's some accountability. I don't know, this seems really ambitious and I like the premise.. but the execution seems too big. I would feel more comfortable if your team started with smaller projects first. Just my opinion because I know get mad when creators start crowdfunding projects, but don't actually finish them.
