Yeah, I was over the moon when my cello teacher called anything I did mediocre! He used to call mediocre "factory produced" - nothing making it bad (so in tune and correct tempo), but nothing making it remarkable either (usually lacking expression). Some variation of that is what most musicians I know understand by mediocre. Mediocre isn't bad, it's what most hobby musicians strive to achive - good or even great is much, much harder to achive. And the harder your piece is, the harder it gets - I can play happy birthday quite well, and I'm perfectly satisfied being mediocre at Elgars cello concerto.

People who don't play instruments just have a hard time considering it as "mediocre"... I definitely hear sloppiness in this performance, even Fanchen's one isn't flawless in some moments. It is just what it is
@user-rf3wo1ll1u4 ай бұрын
My thing is, unless you're a beginner with your instrument you should have an idea of where you need to improve without someone having to spell it out for you, unless your ears don't work. You should be able to hear when you are sloppy, when your tempo is uneven, when your notes don't have clarity and you're rushin, etc... Idk how you could learn a piece of music and not be aware of these things unless you're a beginner.
@SCORCHED-EARTH4 ай бұрын

@wrightcember have you ever just walked by some painting or piece and just been disgusted by how bad the techniques were. Clear brush strokes, bad mixing of thinner, terrible composition, etc. One of my memories was someone asking me how a piece was on their phone and I just went off involuntarily. They deleted their post after and I felt bad ( the person who showed me their art was a younger cousin). I've been trained for this and it makes me sad.

@samnsamole94486 ай бұрын
A someone who was raised on piano and music, I think it would be fair to call myself an "intermediate" musician, though to be fair I basically "gave up" at about 15-16. Though I have some talents, I've never considered myself special. What I've come to learn is that music (and the arts in general) is very intangible to non-artists/musicians. Laymen tend to percieve it as some sort of arcane wizardry rather than simply a skill that one improves at over a lifetime. The first guy is very obviously a hobbyist with maybe a few years under their belt and the second is a serious musican who's probably been playing since childhood. It's like comparing someone who's been studying a language for 2-3 years to a native speaker. I think many have experienced this phenomenon, when you're someone who practices hours a day and you walk outside of your bubble into the laymen world it can be very jarring. You're baffled by the things you see people being impressed by. It's not because you're an asshole, it's likely because you've spent a lifetime being told you're not special yourself and being made to iron out imperfections that are very glaringly obvious to you. I think there's similar things such as chess, gynamastics, etc. People don't really understand the levels of self-criticalness those worlds can leave you with, you're basically getting heavily roasted starting at age 5. It can actually be unhealthy.

Someone who has been learning piano for a couple years will often only see the immense progress they’ve done compared to when they started out. Because of this they will almost be blinded by the pride of their progress or accomplishment. Nothing wrong with this and its like that for pretty much everyone and everything when you’re in the beginning of the learning curve. But when you become really really good at something the improvement lays in the details, and the better you are the smaller the details are. So for some one who doesn’t play piano or any other instrument, the first video may seem great, since they themselves could not have done it. For someone that is quite a long way ahead of you in their learning curve the details that you might not recognise or care about becomes almost blatantly obvious. And since they are used to completely focus on the details to improve, that becomes pretty much the only thing they see.

“How can you dislike this?” “Probably because it’s mediocre” Absolutely reasonable response. If you aspire to be better at something, people calling out your mediocrity IS constructive.
@dr.zoidberg86663 ай бұрын
That's not what "constructive" means. In order for something to be 'constructive criticism' it has to provide specific actionable advice. For instance "I didn't like that meal, if you had cooked it for a few more minutes I think it would be better," is constructive. "That meal was mid" is not. Calling a performance 'mediocre' is not constructive because it doesn't give advice on how to improve.
@typhoonzebra3 ай бұрын
Constructive means that it provides guidance for improvement. Or construction, if you prefer. "Loosen your shoulders and lean back a smidge" is constructive, for example. "Your form is mid" is not. Fittingly, _this_ comment _is_ constructive criticism of yours because I am including specific feedback from which you can grow. Specifically, in how you can improve at recognising constructive criticism. Isn't that meta?
@stykytte3 ай бұрын
Yes, people calling it out is constructive. Being competent and knowing you are bad is far better than being incompetent and thinking you are good. A large part of that is learning to self identify areas of improvement, having to be told where you suck means you suck more than you realise.
@typhoonzebra3 ай бұрын
@@stykytte Calling it mediocre isn't constructive, it's just criticism. The reason why we have the term "constructive criticism" is because not all criticism is constructive. @stykytte3 ай бұрын
@@typhoonzebra When something is just bad, at it's most base level flawed and with no additional level above it having a single redeeming quality, you can just call it bad. Ikr, I thought Charlie interpreted the comment to have way worse intent than it actually did. I honestly thought the same thing when I heard the first dude playing, “Meh cool but it wasn’t a very clean performance.” Saying his playing was mediocre was just the truth. Also I’m not sure if Charlie knew that Boss Sheet Music released a playable version of RushE so it wasn’t as if either of them created a new arrangement for it.

@@calebwilliams3055 When someone is passionate about something; no matter their skill level, I never call their performance bad, or in this case mediocre. That would most likely hurt them. Ive got no reason to put someone down even if it is just telling the truth. Being told the truth often hurts and can setback someone on their path

@@vukvidanovic8276 You know what's more hurtful and extremely toxic for our society? The ideology of putting capricious feelings above facts. That comment wasn't even an insult and Charlie was so overdramatic too. But of course, what else can you expect from his fans other than to blindly follow whatever he is saying? No, you're actually going to hurt that person so much more in the long run if you force fed it lies over lies over lies over lies. I swear, I want so much to just go and kms because of people like you and the way society was shaped to promote ignorance and massive idiocracy. Forcefully indoctrinated with the dogma left behind by an over liberalization of the world. I swear, I only wish I had the courage to do it because it's unbearable.
