As a Tica / Americana, I can attest to a MAJOR problem in Costa Rica - a bloated government bureaucracy & payroll ! Despite improvements thru hi-technology, the bureaucracy is still a MAJOR drawback to almost every other sector. My nephew has a tourism company, and is doing quite well thanks to burgeoning levels of "gringos" coming to CR. HOWEVER, until the bureaucracy is CUT severely, and modernized procedures enacted, nothing else will improve.

Hello Mary. Thank you for sharing your perspective as a Tica/Americana. You're absolutely right about the challenges posed by a bloated government bureaucracy. The level of bureaucracy increases operational costs for small business to operate. Yes, thank goodness that the level of tourists coming to Costa Rica has increased so glad to hear that tourism companies are doing well. That is a vital sector for Costa Rica's economy.

My experience is that the President has very mixed reviews. Many I speak to hate his policies and are happy they’re not getting pushed through.

Hi Liza. Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes I agree that reviews are mixed. He went from 63% approval rating to 52%. The policies that I view as priority are (1) Stimulate economic growth and generate more employment (2) Increase security to reduce the murder rate and impunity (3) Improve judicial efficiency. (4) Strengthen the public health system. Of course others may differ with my views but the current internal battles between the Executive, the Legislature and the Judicial branch do not benefit the citizens of Costa Rica where the growing inequality plays right into the hands of criminal gangs. It appears that the population is slowly giving up the hope and expectations they had with this President to bring fundamental changes to government. The status quo and entrenched bureaucracy seem to be winning at the moment. That makes some people happy so we shall see when the next elections roll around in 2026.

I am a permanent resident of Costa Rica, and a disabled American veteran. I travel frequently back to the U.S., to purchase and consume legal medical cannabis. Meanwhile, typical Pura Vida culture, medical cannabis in Costa Rica has stalled! Even though there is illegal cannabis everywhere!

Thanks for commenting. I wonder if the same group that obstructed the installation of scanners at the ports of entry is the same one stalling the legalization. They make more money with illegal cannabis. This government has publicly indicated that they favor full legalization since they believe that will curtail some of the current drug wars.

100% disabled Veteran here who is looking to relocate so my fixed income can give me a better quality of life. How do you find the healthcare there and do you use your VA benefits for your healthcare or do you find the healthcare affordable enough that you do not need to. I am a medical cannabis patient too so I hope that they can get it passed there.

Hi Shawn. Thank you for watching and your question. I think @puravida5683 is perfect to give you feedback on the healthcare and use of VA benefits as he is a permanent resident of Costa Rica. From my perspective the costs should be lower than the US

I disagree regarding the two political parties. Yes, they collaborate frequently, but corruption was high those days. Multi parties, so to say, fix many of those issues that PLN and PUSC created. Excess of debt, corruption and poor infrastructure and more.

it's the imposing of SOCIALISM Dude. That ALWAYS fails in spurring capitalism and migration into the "middle class". Services sector does NOT (generally) promote economic growth for employees - they stay low wage and only attract low skill job opportunities. LOTS of American companies have located MANY jobs for customer service (which is ALWAYS low wage for the most part). Draconian environmental laws & regs keep out factories, which are MAGENTS of high wage and middle class formation. < yawn > All that capital that China poured into CR between 2000 and 2010 was wasted by the political class; and CR government is ADDICTED to creation of DEBT.
