We're all enamored with our microSD cards and NVMe solid-state drives, but what might we see down the road that could be even cooler?

Nice One. The worry that I have for Deoxyribonucleic Acid-based digital data storage is that it could be incredibly easy to screw up. How would it know where to start reading from, how would it write to the DNA, and most importantly, how would it read from the DNA?

In DNA, each pair in the helix would be 2 bits. 1 bit to represent either AT or GC, then another bit to represent which direction the pair was connected. When you unzip the helix, the AT pair could either have an A or a T on the side of the helix that is being read. Look at the frame @4:05 and you'll see the 1's are ignoring the alignment. (The two 0's that were numbered are actually aligned identically.)

The thing that confuses me about that liquid storage is: How is the data going to be cataloged in a persistent manner? Compared to the current "solid" storage mediums, data isn't going to have a static location in which it will be accessed. So how is the part that's reading/writing the data supposed to identify what's what?

It wont be a complete liquid storage tho. Might be supercooled liquid which is amorphous solid. They may cool it until it becomes a stable solid or stable liquid like mercury which wont flow back and forth so it wont be any problem in reading and writing data. But its still a long way to go. Scientist have successfully created 2 MB out of dna but it much costlier than a regular SSD.

Drawing from an exotic neurophysical energy permeating the cosmos, the Precursors made their artifacts effectively indestructible, allowing them to exist for millions or potentially billions of years without decay. As such, evidence of the Precursors' mastery of neural physics remained in the galaxy after their disappearance, in the form of star roads and many other vast, effectively eternal structures. In a concept later echoed by the Forerunners in their philosophy of Living Time, the Precursors cherished the interaction of living beings with the universe, all individual experience adding to the totality of a transcendent universal wisdom. To record and retain these life-patterns for all of time, the Precursors created the Domain, a metaphysical, ever-changing library of the collective experiences of living things, stored in neural physics architecture within the Milky Way galaxy. I kind of cheated using halo and some of its lore, but similar to how the domain is described. Or you know the 5D data storage that exists in minuscule data crystals that are storing hundreds of terabytes of data.

A couple of thoughts on using DNA. 1. The focus on DNA is only because we have a lot of technology surrounding DNA. The underlying principle is that we're shifting from using a material's shape to store information to using its molecular structure. I expect that, as soon as we have the basics figured out, we will design our own molecules. 2. DNA doesn't do random access, therefore it's going to be very slow. It reminds me of the tapes we had in the 80's. People forget about it, but we did have units that could store TBs of data even back then, and they were quite small for that time. The problem was that it was a tape and you had to wait several minutes for it to roll to your file. This technology never caught on because of how slow it is. Today, it might have been able to hold a petabyte, if not more, but people simply don't care for slow things. I except DNA to have a similar fate.
@GrandNebSmada
@GrandNebSmada 7 жыл бұрын
actually, tape data storage is still very much a thing. Yes it is slow but its not used for speed purposes, its for archival purposes. They even did a video on it a while ago. Many large companies use tapes because they can store in excess of 20 TB of storage on one tape a little bigger than a cassette tape. Also, just a little extra fact, a lot of times in the music producing industry, they actually use digital tapes to send the songs to the factory that makes the cd's and such.

It seems that being able to store more and more data on a typical hard drive is the norm, but no one seems to be interested in creating hard drives that don't break so easily. Yes, being able to store 4 or more TB on one 3.5" hard drive sounds great, if you're not using a RAID configuration and the drive fails, you say good bye to all your data, or you pay someone to recover it for you. The number of failed hard drives I have is ridiculous and the time and effort wasted in recovering my data (not all has been able to be recovered) is deplorable. A 50TB 3.5" hard drive sounds great until it fails. Perhaps it is well beyond time that more robust storage mediums were sought rather than focusing on data storage capacity. I refuse to use hard drives that are larger than 2TB purely for security and safety of my precious data. Love your video's. Very informative and up to date. Great work. Very happy I found your channel and subscribed. Cheers.

It seemed like there was another storage method in discussion as well a while back. May have to find the article. But basically, it involved shoving bits of metal inside of carbon nanotubes. You slide the tube to one end for a 0, and the other end for a 1. It seemed like it was something like 200TB that it could store for nearly 2-billion years. That would be fantastic for archiving.

On one DNA strand there are 4 possibilities, because while each base is always paired with its complement it can be oriented either way in the double strand, putting either of the 2 bases of the pair on the strand. And DNA is actually pretty unstable on long time scales, you need good molecular machinery to maintain it, like certain species of bacteria.

yes, but what about DNA read/write speeds? That's gotta be kinda slow as DNA only stores what makes us us, and that doesn't change (aside from mutations, but thats just a copy/paste gone wrong)

So raiding it is definitely an option, since reading 100 strands of DNA simultaneously is much faster. And DNA replicates much much much more quickly than that. Bacterial DNA replicates at ~1000 bytes per second, and since we would not be using exons, introns, methylation or any other types of regulation, it would be more like bacterial DNA. Also since there are 4 different nucleotides (more if we can create artificial ones which has been done) instead of just 1 & 0 like in binary, the data storage is much denser. The big issue I see is providing the molecules needed for further DNA polymerization. I don't know whether you would store it in the medium, in which case there is a strong likelihood if mutation, so you need error correction machinery, meaning you need different proteins in the medium for that, which can degrade over time, etc. Ultimately I think the drive would actually have to be a living object that you place into your computer that has been engineered to the point where it is a storage medium, which would actually be fascinating all on its own.
@MrMhmToasty
@MrMhmToasty 7 жыл бұрын
DNA will always mutate, it's what drives evolution. However, yes there are definitely ways to prevent mutation. There is a good chance they actually transcribe the DNA to RNA, translate it to proteins and then do computation with the proteins, much the way our bodies do.

You are wrong guys. On DNA it matters if the base pair is AT or TA because it's only translated one of the.chains in to proteins. So you can not store DNA in a binari code so easy, that's why it can stores so many information in a little space.
