Chelsea and Aaron both are so brash but I love the honesty and rawness of that. Their love of the sport and wanting to see it succeed over their own "clout" and "fortunes" is something that is refreshing and is needed so much more in every sport. Super hard to find those people outside of grassroots.
@worstenbroodje6832

It's needed more in general. For some reason most people only care about clout these days and do whatever they have to to get it. I just can't imagine my life being boring enough to get pleasure from getting follows or Instagram likes or whatever. These two guys get it and are passionate about something real.

@@arisfaria2723 which is totally fine, like skating, there’s a whole commitment factor behind. People wanna learn to skate, but don’t want to put in the commitment to learning hard tricks, taking falls and getting back up, breaking boards, and getting hurt. Same thing for drifting, people wanna do it because it looks cool, but don’t take it serious because there not as committed to fully learning, risking their car, and everything that comes with. Much easier to take your car and whiz around a parking lot(no offense autocrossers) or fly straight down a track. It’s easier and less risky to your car and takes less commitment

I think taking a look at what Drift Masters has been doing with their series to help spectators and viewers understand what's going on and stay engaged with the events is something other series should take note of. DM also has Red Bull money backing them but it's something that I noticed adds a flair to their series when compared to many other drift series out there right now.

I really like the idea for future drifting including team battles / team rivals. Having 2 or 3 man teams that do a run on track and have different scoring systems or style completions while driving and being judged from there. Or having the team battles go against other teams. 4 man on track with 2 2 man teams. I wish it was possible to see more than 2 cars competing at once. I like the more lively idea of fireworks when driving and completing also. Sounds dumb but more exciting ad on's

I disagree with a few things. 1 clout chasing. I’ve watched a bunch of lone star, one of that seems to be preached on this channel, is using social media/KZfaq to build a brand that you can take to sponsors and turn drifting in some level a business. So you need people to follow and like you. So how do you achieve this without some level of clout chasing? 2. Ppl that only drive 10 laps. Who cares what they choose to do with there track time? They are supporting then event $$ and there not taking track time away from anyone. They literally are the best thing for try hards and seat time guys. Love the channel. Keep up the videos

I feel you Chelsea... so many people "drift" or "takeover" streets for clout on youtube. All I want to do is drive, I couldn't care less about the clout, and it disappoints me to see how the car community has become focused around the clout. I've been saving money for years to build something that I can track and I'm finally building it (or waiting forever for parts that I've ordered at least). If I could drive every single day and practice drifting every day, nothing would make me happier. Racing for me has been a life long obsession since I was a child lol

Man I if I had a dollar for every time someone suggested building an American Ebisu or Nordschliefe (for the track guys) I could probably build both lol. We can't copy the magic from Ebisu, the whole "vibe" of the place is way more than the track layout. Pretending that the funding was already available, I think it'd be better for the scene to build multiple local drift/circuit courses instead of going all in on one crazy facility. Edit: plus the fact that a lot of the Japanese tracks are more accessible in terms of price/availability. I can't just rock up to my local US drift track and run it unattended on a Wednesday or something.

Chelsea is a legend, great interview/chat. Well done some points discussed. My own humble opinion Drift week 1 was just amazing, people involved, the content shared. The smaller community made it more feel more involving as a viewer, you learnt who the people were and you felt a greater connection to it. Just a brilliant experience to be able to watch and enjoy with some great people. Helped get me through a hard time and gave me something great to watch. Drift week 2 felt like it lost some of the close community feel that the first had but can totally appreciate what you said about the financial aspects of having more people on board.

Chelsea. I have followed you for a long time, since the early e36's. I just wanted to add a thing about the ask-holes. I think, people just see this cool thing and want to try it, once they feel they got a hang on it a bit, the interest just fades, I think, that is a normal thing in new hobbies. And another thing - unfortunattely, those with good money try a lot of hobbies, so the ones in a not so great situation (like me, f.ex), get mixed in with all the ask-holes. I am trully gratefull for all the tips you give, I have drifted whole nights in the winter, perfecting the lines and understanding the car. (It just hit home for me - "doing the same thing over and over" since I have litterally just wanted to drift my car for hours on end, but due to financial situation, I dont have the luxury to go to such a drift school as yours) I am pretty sure, there are a lot of guys like me out there - who just want to drift over and over again. (I sometimes dream, if I had a lot of money, I would just live on the racetrack)

If each driver had a livestream in-car for the fans, they could definitely feel the intensity a lot more.

Why don’t we have more events like drift shifters in fd? Mike puts these events into small areas that are crazy well known, the track is small and technical and the lights and things like that make it semi simple to follow, the point system would need to be cleaned up but I think overall it’s more of a spectacle and doesn’t require crazy high power and high speed drifting

The way I see it, drifting has become a social media attention grab for a lot of people. When you go to a drift day the majority of drivers set up cameras and vlog everything. Very few people go to just drive for their own enjoyment. Also the cars tend to be built up beyond what is needed and have so many problems that drifting a full day isn't possible.

I think a big issue now days is no one wants to start at the bottom anymore. Not just in drifting either, Basically all of car culture. With the way the lifestyle is portrayed on social media with the big dollar cars, Obscene amounts of money in mods etc a lot of people get turned away because they think they need a certain car built to a certain level to be able to enjoy it. A good amount of the momentum drifting had in the earlier days was as much to do with the perceived accessibility as it was how awesome and exciting it is. The "cool cars" to have were at the time relatively cheap and the mods weren't anything really special because a lot of the big dollar parts didn't exist yet. I think a good way to promote the sport and get more growth would be to get some of the well known influential guys into some dirt cheap cars and use their platform to show people you don't need to spend big to enjoy the sport. I'm not even talking things like Z's with angle kits or anything. Just the cheapest even remotely suitable rwd cars with the absolute minimal mods required to make them work well enough to have a good time. Hell, grab a bunch of busted ass crown vics if Cleetus hasn't driven the prices up yet and give them welded diffs and drive the hell out of them. Half the battle is won getting people "through the door" and you can't grow the higher tiers without first building up the lower tiers to support them.

Every event needs an MC! I’m usually driving, and it’s a lot of fun, but one thing I’ve noticed right away from chilling around.... If you don’t know anyone at the track as a spectator, it’ll get a bit awkward and kind of boring. Also small goals or challenges per event will get the spectator involved with the drivers from a safe distance, but the MC will need to bring both driver and spectator into one show for it to work as entertainment.

I love how Aaron asked "who is very influential in drifting"? But to be honest he is one of the most influential people in drifting.

Drifting is not a motorsport, it is a culture and can only survive through cultural propagation. Social media isn't necessarily culture, it's mass market culture. Money cannot save drifting because mass markets aren't built sustainably. In the mass culture drifting just has to remain "cool", in private it has to remain relevant enough through true devotees to attractive new adherents.

100% agree about what you said about Chelsea! He really just seems like such a down to earth dude who loves drifting and having fun, and who just so happens to have a camera on him sometimes. Vaughn, Field, Tuerk, Aasbo etc are all epic drivers and seem like great people, but they've got a bit of that "celebrity" vibe to them. Chelsea just seems like a real down to earth funhaver!

Only thing I dislike is the hate against progression of content platforms . The internet has been around a while now and influencers are crucial to a lot of businesses. You do your influence via KZfaq. If you want to sleep on other viable platforms because you don’t understand how to benefit from them then that’s fine. But they are plenty viable and you can post whatever you want. It doesn’t have to be tik tok dances. Drift week couldn’t even exist without KZfaq or “clout” and half the influencers on the trip is what brings people to watch the content. People you interview on drift week who are unknown in the community get exposure through interviews and what they decide to do with that exposure is up to them. Typically they are normal people who don’t care so that doesn’t grow anything. I think the bigger issue is that the influencers are doing what they want for their personal reasons and then they say certain things like 350z’s are boring and ugly and then everyone just echos the same thing even though they don’t know anything about cars/drifting etc. Why the big boost in content this drift week? Cuz your all about clout? No... because you have to promote things and get people interested and keep people interested to continue doing it or be in the position to try and “improve” it . It’s simple

The funny thing is the exact situation Chelsea is speaking on is happening in virtual competitive drifting, You can have someone spend $1200 on a rig and then after 1 maybe two attempts to even qualify they give up. You take the time to help the people that ask for the cheat codes you've acquired whether it be tuning, or technique and more than half the time they either dont listen or dont understand why what your saying is important.

i dont agree with you saying you dont matter...its good to be humble but you have to recognize how much work you put in so that other people can enjoy the sport! i really wish i could meet you one day and drive your event(s) keep it up i love to see your videos i look at them religiously 😂 also im trying to build my car as you say you should not as you do🤣

Drift week needs to get as big as drag week and rocky mountain race week. Basically we need a 1320 video of the drift world just walking around and showing us normies all the builds and cool stuff going on.

I think I understand part of what Chelsea is saying with you pour time, money and effort into providing a way to learn, a place to learn, the proper instruction, etc. Then the person gets a new thing in their sights and its over with. I think his frustration is not so much the money, the cars, venues that are provided. Its his time. He takes away from himself to provide to strangers. THen they dont care. This is what is frustrating for me. Its not realistic to go to an event once a month simply for costs. But if i had the money to do it id literally drive every day. I eat breathe and sleep drifting and racing in general. Just wish I had the means to do what i want to do. His thing is truly a labor of love because there isnt a fair tradeoff for what he does to help the community around him. I also agree that clout chasing hurts it as well. People are so worried about being the next big thing and their interests lie in self rather than the community around them.

As a "casual drift fan"; the problem with this conversation is that both these guys literally live for drifting. Drift is unfortunately a niche market, especially here in the states. As a reined cowhorse trainer, I'm aware that what I do isn't for everyone and there isn't endless money to throw at it. If you live in a niche market it's hard to look around and realize that not everyone lives for what you're investing your life in.

FD needs to be cameras in and on each car so they can cycle car cameras during the runs. Instead of just drones and stationary cameras on the ground. Then the crowd can see the distances between, etc.. That shouldn't even be a huge investment either.

The biggest reason more people don't get into drifting is because it's a very expensive hobby. If you're not "going for it" as in pro or whatever then you're spending a ton of money, space and time on a hobby. 5k+ car, tire money, track money, probably need a trailer and a truck, need mechanical skill, if shit breaks its expensive and you might need labor. As you improve you need more money for upgrades to suspension, braking or power. TBH to keep it as a hobby you essentially need to be a youtuber just to save some money. That's why you get a person coming to Denofa's class for one and done.

the intro part saying he'd get angry made me think you were leading up to Cleetus being the most influential even though he's driven a drift car in like, 2 events ever

@@jamesdoranto9013 I thought so at first, but with Aaron's explanation of what he meant (person who's setting the direction of the game) I don't think so. Adam has a big audience but he's just going where the excitement is right now, not creating new types of event. Might be a personality thing; he's said he's more introverted and doesn't like hosting events that often. I get the impression he's big for KZfaq but not really in the level of wealth where you can own a track and not worry about it being profitable so he probably has to be a bit cautious about throwing everything into a new version of competition.
@EGHeartattack

@@PSTS636 That doesn’t mean he can just run a track. People don’t realize that running a track is very expensive, takes a ton of time/effort, and not profitable at all. It’s a lot of upkeep. Adam bought that compound to run his company to make money...
@Stereomoo

@@PSTS636 Honestly the up front price of that property is peanuts, at current mortgage rates you could own a $2m property for under $20k a year. The real problem would be it probably has several hundred thousand in immediate maintenance needs if you wanted it to be at 100%.
