my office just ordered 8 Dell Ultrasharp U2724D displays for our developers. 120hz QHD IPS Black 8bit+FRC so I'm excited. Definitely will be an upgrade to the current crap 24" FHD Dell's we're using.

Very interesting and a nice bump for IPS, especially if it works with high refresh rate displays in the future without the flickering gamma shift in VRR other displays get, perhaps IPS black is just below the threshold.

Very interesting. First time I've heard of "IPS Black". Good to see monitor tech improving. Sure OLED is amazing but for my use, I need to have zero burn-in risk

@@bratecyo That's because you can use OLED for TV or gaming but not as a monitor, because with static images and long usage-times, the burn-in is guaranteed and definitely annoying.

1,081 hours with my LG C2 42" OLED TV and counting. I used it as a monitor and I have no burn-in issues. Granted, I have my TV's brightness setting set to 0 and the brightness is not that bad while in a dark room. Been using it for 12 to 15 hours a day.

Also note that FFS design can exchange efficiency for response time. Negative dielectric anisotropy LC allows more light through, while postive LC has a faster response. Note that -LC orients its poles away from the electrode (all VA are negative dielectric LC) while +LC twist toward the electrode.

Just got the U2723qe, open box and I cannot be happier. Aside from the clarity it's improved CR makes bright rooms with this monitor soooo much better.

Yes, tentatively excited, but needs: 1) Higher refresh rate of panel and faster pixel response time (rise/fall) 2) Higher maximum constant luminosity 3) Backlight technology for true HDR experience

From watching some 32GQ950 videos it seems that this ATW polarizer that they use for it is extremely effective at reducing glow, so I guess they should combine the two technologies. 2000:1 IPS with ATW polarizer would be a massive upgrade over current IPS displays, especially for ultrawides. Hopefully they will have something like this at CES.

Still though, for head-on usage this is what we've all been waiting for, and it could be some manufacturers do slap on an additional polarizer to help, we shall see! :)

Which revision did you receive, A00 or A01? I've tested five samples of the U2723QE and only the A01 samples reached 2000:1. As for the IPS glow, the very small improvement is not making a real difference in real world applications. At least not in my opinion. But very nice that you've made this video and comparing IPS Black with other IPS panels. As far as I know this is the only professional review where the IPS glow is taken into account. Many thanks for this great video!

I have some concerns about the response times of this technology . Va deeper blacks were the main culprit of bad response times , so maybe the same thing applies here too .

There's possibly an added challenge there, it will be interesting to see how future panels shape up, especially if and when high refresh rate options appear. I share your concern though

Welcome to KZfaq guys. I've been using your site for panel/monitor information for years. I hope this becomes a useful addition to the portfolio. IPS desperately needed this bump in contrast levels. Unfortunately I think it's come to late to have any real impact. 2-3 years ago they could have gobbled up share of the higher end market but now OLEDs are here.

This should have come already 5+ years ago. Really IPS is the only type of LCD which should have gotten R&D money since 15 years ago. Rest of the money should have gone to self emissive pixel techs to get actually worthy replacement for CRT. OLED again seems badly FUBAR for PC use with that fancy "organic" part being the problem with its fragility.

something like this but with at least 160Hz and A-TW would be good upgrade from LG 27GP950 (same panel as EVE). Though truth be told I do not really complain about black levels because I use lots of ambient light anyways

Just commenting to get the engagement up for your channel - thank you TFTCentral! But as a side note, I've long been irritated that IPS panels keep getting bigger considering IPS glow hasn't been dealt with. Where are all the good 21.5 and 24" panels!

yeah those smaller screens are not a big segment any more. The smallest area they seem to be investing in still would be 24.5" with super high refresh rates. I can't go back to using a small screen any more, 1080p is just too low :)

VA cons are smearing, response time issues, no-one seems capable of doing a VA monitor right (always problems) and development of VA has slowed, OLED would be king if it didn't have a high risk of burn in with static images.

@@voidtoast4880 "high risk of burn in" You really are exaggerating here. There is a risk, but seems like LG did a really good job at mitigating this issue. Look up comments from anyone who's been using an LG OLED TV as a monitor recently.

Note that all IPS LCDs are actually Fringe Field Switching. It's a truly remarkable invention. The main advantage of FFS is that there is no dead zone above the electrode. Thankfully I don't believe it was patented, so you get a wide variety of sources - AHVA, PLS and such.

While I very much welcome any improvements to IPS black levels, this really is the definition of "Too little too late." When they can't even get a high refresh rate version out the door yet, what appeal does this have over OLED tech? Apart from no burn-in risk, I'm not seeing any. They could compete on price, I suppose...

Price and, perhaps, energy consumption, although the latter is extremely varied across models. It is also not a competitor to OLED but to VA. Better response times without ghosting, more accurate colors, also thanks to better viewing angles, more possibilities in the ultra-wide area (curved screens not being a necessity, unlike VA).

Micro LED is a long way off and would be a different technology altogether, but there's a chance that IPS Black could be used in Mini LED backlight monitors to enhance the contrast and improve performance. VA panels normally do better than IPS for HDR on those kind of screens because of their better native contrast ratio, so this could definitely help improve IPS options if used

nice to see you started a youtubechannel. its a good improvement for black in ips panels no doubt, but oled has the better responsetimes for gaming, so i would rather go for an oled 4k 32 inch 240hz without burninrisk in the near future instead of ips black. for now i am waiting on the release of the asus pg27aqn for the highest performance

one drawback of the oled which keeps me not considering them as an option for daily work is the flickering. Having 400 hz of flickering is just silly nowadays. It is a good thing that ips technology is evolving and is not abandoned.

@tftcentral from the reviews i've read i didn't got into some oled monitor or laptop with oled screen that doesn't have pwm flickering for brightness adjustment . All had it in the range of hundreds of hertz. Comparing with traditional panel which doesn't have it at all or it is 20khz or more.

@sanbim4 they all have a very minor brightness fluctuation in sync with the refresh rate but is far from on/off stitching like PWM and would not be considered flicker. It also has no relationship to brightness adjustment, as there’s no backlight to even adjust on these panels. It’s not something you need to worry about on OLED screens 😀

Is this the same tech Linus from LTT made a video about at some tech event few years ago? I remember the tech was basically a double layer of LCD, a normal one like in typical IPS and an additional one just to make the blacks blacker. I remember that he was really impressed by it and was struggling to differentiate it from an OLED, in bright expo conditions, mind you. I'm not sure it is though, as afair it wasn't presented by any company I recognised. I might be wrong though. Really cool to see IPS still can be significantly improved either way. Good video!

no, its different.. the one in Linus video is Dual Layer LCD.. so 2 LCD panel stack, one of them is only black and white and has less resolution (half of the other one), and it works as a local dimming.. cmiiw

that would be dual layer lcd which is different. you can see a video on hdtvtest where he reviewed the hx310 which uses that technology. sadly it will never make it to mainstream market, and therefore never make it to the much smaller desktop market, because it requires way more power (so much so that the hx310 needed a massive heatsink and a bunch of loud fans) to get bright enough thanks to light passing through 2 lcd layers instead of 1 and the viewing angles are wrecked due to the same dual layers. i think hisense released one tv model that was dual layer lcd then went on to mini-led as it was too expensive to produce (and iirc it couldn't even sell in the EU due to their draconian energy laws lol).

I work with photography and video and have been using the Dell UP2716D which covers 100% Adobe s RGB but I want to get a bigger 4k 32" monitor. At home I already have two LG C1 Oled one of which replaced my 15 year old 50" Panasonic Plasma that everyone was worried with bur in too just like OLED, I didn't had any major burn-in and still sold it for 200€ Now I'm between this IPS Black or the newer Oled monitors (I can only find them on the gaming side of things) Wich one do you recommend for my use case? IPS BLACK or OLED? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

They just need to make a 5K model in something like 27-32" for us Mac folks to use HiDPI and I'll happily upgrade to an IPS Black monitor.

I had hoped for you to also measure brightness uniformity. This is very important, but few reviewers seem to measure this. Before only pro reviews measured color delta E, and once everyone started measuring this then things approved across all market segments, same refresh rates etc. Can we please get more to measure this so that even displays aimed at photographers etc actually improve this. Only Eizo and NEC and high end SONY seem to care about this currently, Benq, Asus who aim for this market usually are quite a bit worse in this regard, which is extremely important for video editors or photographers.

We do measure luminance uniformity in some of our reviews, certainly for any screen aimed at higher end or professional markets. We tend not to bother as much for gaming screens due to time constraints though

I like the improved contrast ratio but for me personally not usable with only 60Hz when I have been gaming at 144Hz for 7 years now. Since oled monitors are now slowly starting to pop up I feel it's to little to late. If they where 120Hz or higher there would have been a bigger market for them.

One draw is OLED monitors cost even more than tvs, which are like 10-30 inches bigger. And they don't have anti reflective coating, which makes me use my IPS monitor more during day than my LG OLED tv... There are a lot of other reasons that annoy me, like auto dimming, which occurs very quickly, even when watching movies.

@@ryudjn6590 They do have anti reflective coating but its different. And it depends on the light in your office space and personal preference what works best for you. If i compare the AW3423DWF with my Iiyama 3466 and AOC G2X i like the glossy coating of the alienware way better reflection wise. Burn in is a thing but i run all my screens @ 120nits SDR so brightness wise its more than bright enough for me since the screen can hit 240-250 full screen white i dont need that much. And in HDR mode it will do up to 1000 where the other screens can only do +-400 but it looks dull because no local dimming vs per pixel dimming. So it all depends on the use case. But i do agree OLED monitors are still expensive compared to the 42" TV's. Its the first generation so i hope they will come down in the coming years.

A display using this IPS Black Panel combined with an ATW Polarizer with about 1000 full array local dimming zone backlight would produce a spectacular monitor. Hope someone in the industry sees this comment and suggests it to the higher management. Then again, I'm just dreaming of a fairy tale world.

@@ExSkyCyclePilot Miniled do not come cheap at all. Very expensive. ATW polarizer is also so expensive too. Combined both. It probably will end up over $2k for just standard 2k or 4k for that. Not good value for money vs OLED monitor to compare. But only best part about IPS is sharper text and easy to read vs OLED not that great in text rendering.

The demonstration is good, but the limited refresh rate makes them pointless as this is the major point of IPS against VA. If those panels can go to high refresh rates, then equipped with FALD and enough zones, they could prove absolutely perfect.

Definitely not an expert here, but I don't see the point in investing in IPS panels when there are better options such as OLED and QLED to improve on. Perhaps it's just my personal disgust for IPS glow and backlight bleeding, but what are the practical advantages to IPS apart from viewing angles? Some say it's color reproduction, but whether that is a matter of the panel technology itself is questionable. I'd rather have decent contrast ratio with zero IPS glow/backlight bleeding than wide color gamut!

Price, burn-in and text sharpness. OLEDs give fuzzy text because of their pixel sub-layout. OLEDs therefore are not ideal for work applications.

For gaming I would expect OLED to be the more popular, if they can increase refresh rates even further and make more use of BFI technologies it could be amazing in that space

Actually the question in my mind is: Will IPS Black technology be used in 2024 LG TVs? Because dell certainly won't make any TVs. Only TV size gaming monitors with insane price tags.

I don't think that 24 inch monitor will be made with IPS Black, rather 27 as it increasingly becomes standard for the office.

First would be larger screen sizes (48" or so for 2160P or 4320P), and better colour support on those large screen sizes. I.e. a 43" / 2160p panel usually only has 95% sRGB which is just bad. There's no reason why they can't make large panels with good colour (hell they use the same technology in 55" TV's with wide gamut) but the entire industry is skipping everything from ~33 - 50 inches in 16:9 / 16:10 format. I'm tired of having to use numerous small screens (5-7 of them) to create a desktop which I have been doing for well over a decade. TV's and OLED just suck for this due to colour fringing of text and burn-in issues. So though I appreciate the 'black' aspect here, frankly, I would rather even see a CCFL 48" 2160P with wide gamut (hell, my old HP LP3065 from 2007 had a wide gamut and could calibrate down to

@@tftcentral problems here is the 100% resolution or an integer scale (pixel doubling). anything more than 100dpi (assuming 100%) is hard to read for text. If you pixel double that then you're reducing your screen real estate by half so defeats the purpose and you should just buy a 24" 1080p monitor instead. The Asrock one I did hear about at computex and assuming to run that at 4k (i.e. pixel double) would give you an effective text size of about 80 dpi. which is too large (akin to running a 1080p monitor at ~27-28", plus at a sitting distance of about 30" the size can be too large (it's larger than a 27/30" screen positioned vertically). Plus there is zero information as to colour gamut, pixel/subpixel information (or really anything else at this stage). I'm still watching for it as there has been *NOTHING* else. And yes I have also looked at Signage displays, even the hospital CuratOR EX4342 display from EIZO (which there is a 43" version but zero documentation and no means to buy it).

@@TheEchelon incorrect. OS scaling reduces the amount of data that can be displayed on the screen. i.e. a 3840x2160 panel with a display scaling of 200% only can show the data of a 1920x1080 panel. So then you need a panel that is 4x larger yet again to get to the data/information density that you can see. I would argue that display scaling is *only* good for people who do *NOT* use computers for data or only watch videos or other graphics where actual information density is not a concern. (i.e. using it as a TV). Unfortunately this is quite common these days as there are fewer and fewer people who actually in my 'terms' DO WORK, but instead are just consumers of content.

Depending on ambient light conditions and reflections that can happen. Although the perceived contrast ratio of these IPS Black panels should still be double that of the perceived contrast ratio of older IPS panels, given the coating is the same, and as long as all other variables are consistent.

That's BS that Linus started recently. The difference is not that big and the trade-off of seeing your own detailed reflection in dark scenes is absolutely not worth it. Even using dark mode would be distracting af. Like, I'm using dark mode on my mobile to save some battery life and I really wish it had a matt coating more often than not. I'm using a high end monitor and I very much care how things look on my screen, but I'm still of opinion that colour vibrancy and contrast is less important than overall user experience.

Some of us have curtains in our house and dont operate our PC with flood lamps behind us lighting up our space.

To directly demo some video example would be nice. This review is not quite informative. I only get the numbers which I can know from RTINGS, what youtube review can add is the real demo showing what does the numbers truly represent. Is the 2000:1 vs 1000:1 really significant when we perceive through our eyes, or we only notice that difference when 3000:1 vs 1000:1. No offense, just a random user feedback wishing to help.

Wish TCL would make monitors that use their new TV VA panels that have a 7500 static contrast ratio and fantastic viewing angles. Also their mini led technology together with their VA panels would be so compelling and would beat Asus mini led monitors both in performance and price.

What pisses me off is the fact that all Apple "Retina 4/6K(IPS)" panels on the IMac since 2011 are 1,000,000:1 infinite contrast, which is why we don't have infinite contrast 8k IPS panels yet? I believe that the industry purposely blocks the delivery of these technologies for dirty commercial reasons, spawning mediocre VA(GAMER) panels every year, there is no reason to not have this type of product on the market yet. What we see is products with "balancedly mediocre" configurations are never 100% satisfactory. Apple only offers infinite panels in its IMAC's, what is the difficulty of a DELL or Samsung to produce such panels with this quality? Conspiracy theory? Maybe... We had to have at least 10,000:1 IPS panels or 40,000:1 minimum contrast. This whole situation is a shame. It feels like we are being deceived. Excellent video!👍

Apple aren’t doing anything special. It’s hard to find details specs of the displays in their iMacs, but if they have that kind of contrast ratio spec then it will be a dynamic contrast ratio, and therefore largely pointless. Loads of IPS monitors have DCR too but most people hate that tech and find it annoying. Underneath all that, if they’re IPS panels they will have the same 1000:1 max ish static contrast ratio Any models that include local dimming backlights / Mini LED in more recent years (and I’ve not checked if any of them do) could be better but then the same applies to desktop monitors if they have fancier backlights. Those weren’t around back in 2011 though so I’m pretty sure any high contrast ratio specs will be from crappy DCR operation

There is no reason to release 60hz panels in the year 2022. Doubling the contrast to 2000 while simultaneously shipping with a crippled refresh rate isnt going to entice anyone when they are competing against 165mhz+ VA's and the OLED's that are (finally) starting to become mainstream consumer display devices. By the time they are shipping fast true black panels (another year? 2?) there will likely be even more pressure from QD-OLED or miniLED displays.

I ordered this monitor for graphic design. Yes 90Hz should be a minimum in 2022, but the color performance is the n.1 priority for me. For gaming i use ultrawide 21:9 + 144Hz. Hope soon the technology allow us to have one ultimate monitor (maybe mini leds, or oleds). Until then is good to pick a monitor based on the primary purpose of use.

There is little to no excuse given that consumers are now being fed high refresh on their phones and tablets, with only their desktop or laptops lagging behind. Why would I tolerate 60hz on my desktop when literally every other device I own is 120Hz plus as a consumer? Any display arriving in 60hz should be written off as the garbage it is.

"black depth" is literally the same as contrast ratio, you do not need to specify both

Well it’s not is it? Black depth on its own can’t tell you the contrast. You need to know the brightness as well to calculate contrast. It was included as an additional measure to show how dark the screen can get in darker content. Knowing the contrast ratio on its own can’t tell you that, it can only tell you the relationship between the bright and dark.

All the screens were calibrated to a 120 nits white luminance level and so the black depth and resulting contrast ratio is relative to that. Ie black depth when measuring a black sample window when the displays brightness is set to a level that delivers 120 nits white luminance

IPS Black is great new tech for IPS w/o FALD, but for those panels with mini-LED/FALD such as the PG32UQX the SDR contrast can approach 4000:1 with the variable backlight on. It is >100,000:1 in HDR. Some are much higher. I wonder why TFTCentral did not include this in the graph. Nevertheless, good work. Also, one final note, OLED technically has "infinite contrast" on paper due to true blacks, but the "perceived contrast" to the human eye is poor due to poor brightness levels, especially in HDR. When you are increasing black level beyond a point, it is diminishing returns because the human eye does not perceive that black level depth as much as it perceives high brightness. Mini-LED can achieve black points of 0.009 or less. Remember, visible sunlight when you walk outside even indirectly is ~7,000-10,000 nits. Honestly I am tired of reviewers (TFTCentral included) stating the HDR performance of OLED is the "best." That is utter rubbish. Watching any scene with higher light effects (the new Game of Thrones DolbyVision remaster, first episode in a snow field is an excellent example) will highlight this perfectly. The Mini-LED puts the OLED to utter shame.

This is gigantic improvement for IPS monitor market. 60 Hz is completely fine for millions of people. Color accuracy with deeper blacks makes VA panels unnecessary.

I think the advertisement with focus on the black levels in time of oled hype is a big mistake. The high contrast ratio on an ips monitor is much more impressive to me. Combine that with 100hz+ and take my money.
