This Kit is awesome, but Apple will have to reduce storage prices if they are really interested in bringing players to their platform, each Mac should start from 500 GB if you want users to start downloading AAA video games

Well, you could probably use an external thunderbolt storage. It would definitely be cheaper to do that.

I manage to install Diablo IV on my MBP M1. Took me 2 hours with the Game Porting Kits and its stuff. Got around 60-70 FPS. Definitely playable

Thanks, this is interesting and I appreciate the example game you played in that toolkit. I caught this announcement when they mentioned it in the keynote, but I didn’t get exactly what it was until your explanation here. This is encouraging, because I’m thinking the graphics and CPU performance you might get in the cheapest M2 mini might even cost less relative to a Windows PC built to a similar performance level. In fact, maybe that’s a video idea? Figure out some Windows builds that would be comparable in CPU/graphics to each of the M2 options (std., max, ultra) and how the cost would compare. Regardless, it would be awesome to have access to more games without having to own a second platform (Windows, PlayStation, etc.)

They went over it very quickly in the keynote and I almost missed it too. Right?! It would be awesome to just have an Apple silicon machine that does it all. I'm glad Apple is exploring this and hopefully game devs find it worth it to invest their games in. That's a great video idea!

haha yeah, it's a wild ride. Thanks for the support. My goal is to just commit to videos. I feel like niching down at this point might not be great for keeping the channel alive so things are going to be a bit chaotic for a while. I'm experimenting with some vlog style videos so those aren't off the table. It's been super fun honing this film making craft and there's lots more to come.

Since I updated to Sonoma on my M1, fortnite has been super choppy. Could it be the internet connection or has anyone experienced the same?

The article you’ve linked suggests that everything included in the game porting toolkit is copied over to the wine setup. This would basically make the deem the mounted disk useless once that step is followed. Am I correct in saying this or do you actually have to have it mounted on at all times

In my experience, even though it's copied over, the toolkit still needed to remain mounted. It tripped my up because I'm always unmounting my SD cards when I import footage so I did the same thing here and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working for like 30mins lol. So, I figured I'd mention that to help someone out 🙂.

I've been testing this on my wife's M1 mac book air and with me being a Linux user I've dug thru the files created in the wine prefix this is using ported versions of DXVK and VKD3d from valves Proton so any game that works with proton should work with this but don't think developers will port games over they will more likely just automate the setup of this porting kit to run the games as is done on the steam deck and Linux with proton.

First: Do you know any way to install a browser? I tried with Chrome, Edge and OperaGX. One of the games requires logging in via discord and the authorization page starts for me in a browser on a mac (probably it will also be required to set it as default to open page). Second question: How can I uninstall programs?

You should be able to place any executable in there as long as everything is pointing to the directory that contains the .exe. If there's dependencies like discord you might have to install that too. I'm not sure how to uninstall.

You can do it via the command used to start the game or launch the game in Automated by specifying "gameport-no-hud".

I haven't figured that out. It's using the default resolution that's set by MacOS. I'm sure there's something you can add to the startup command that forces a particular resolution.

It comes built into the game porting toolkit. You can disable it by appending a "-no-hud" like "gameportingtoolkit-no-hud".

If you have a Mac with Apple M1 or M2 chips you can use the Game Porting Toolkit to get it going. It's a beta feature so YMMV.

Most of these new updates are for Apple silicon, I believe. Hopefully with more capability comes ports to older hardware.

This "gaming looking bright" has been coming for 10 years already and haven't gotten any "brighter". I've got a Mac, but I don't believe a single damn word Apple says about such things.

These are actual features being added to the OS so naturally this is getting folks excited as Apple has invested money for people to write these tools. I would find it very odd if Apple just up and pulled the plug on these features. When a company dedicates resources to opening up capability that def sends some positive signals.

@@TaylorBrauer Do you know why as a software dev I prefer using higher level languages and offload most compatibility issues to the runtime that's somebody else's problem? - Because the second some low-level OS API changes, a housefire happens. Ask any developer who has developed anything for the Apple ecosystem and you'll find they're not always so happy with touching Mac because of how often things just break.

It's not necessary to keep the Game Porting Toolkit mounted, however you need to have Homebrew and through it, to install the Game Porting Toolkit (GPT)... Once you do that, you can unmount it. :D

Sadly, it's not coming fast enough. I refuse to upgrade to sonoma. i just convinced myself to upgrade to Ventura. I usually upgrade a year after it is officially released. A game porting toolkit isn't enough to convince me to upgrade to a less stable mac os. Not until it becomes user friendly.

I can understand that. This version of GPT is running on Ventura which by now has many stable releases. I'm not sure if GPT runs any faster on Sonoma.

I would never release games for macs as long as the base config has 8gb of shared RAM and 256gb storage. Half the user base cant play basic games.

idk about that one in particular. It means that game developers might have more incentives to develop for Mac but no guarantees on what runs/runs well.

The point is, it's getting much better. If there's more adoption of AAA games then some folks might not even want a Windows PC.

@@TaylorBrauer I doubt that'd change, it's cool if Mac os will support the better games, but I highly doubt that. Apple is greedy, and they'll take a big cut from the sales, which will make it less of an incentive for anyone to port games over that's the reason they're isn't a big library I'm pretty sure. Also windows machine tower can be built for any price level, or there are cheap laptops as well. Apple and cheap don't go together. I Apple needs to buy they're studio to develop there games if they really want to compete, that's the only way I think they'd have a chance.

Never had as many BAD experiences with gaming as I have had with Apple throughout the last 10 years. And Sonoma is the worst. I would NEVER recommend an Apple product for gaming NEVER. Personal experience, not run test in a lab. Just a regular guy who will probably need to buy a PC to do some average gaming (No Man's Sky, Baldur's Gate 3, etc.) Let alone the fact that out of about 1 millions games available to PC, 5 are available for Mac...so yeah there is that. DO NOT TRY TO TELL PEOPLE that Macs are good for gaming THEY ARE NOT! I would say it's a bit DISINGENUOUS. Again, this is from your average Joe who tries to enjoy and relax gaming every once in a while. Peace.

You bring up some good points about there being few games available to the Mac market when comparing it to Windows. Performance in those games available is going to be dependent on your hardware. This example was run on an M1 Max with 32GB of RAM which is a $3500 computer. It absolutely makes no sense to buy this just for gaming and that's not the point being made in the video. This is all about an effort Apple is making to improve the gaming experience on Apple silicon macs. It's far from perfect and still is a ways out from practical but it's moving in that direction.
