I look at modern rock & metal bands that might be future classics including Turnstile, Lorna Shore, Sleep Token, Polyphia, Ghost, MGK, Falling In Reverse, Bad Omens and more. Are they the future of metal?

I do think people sleep so much on the modern rock and metal scene and say blanket statements like "there's nothing interesting or original" but then you can show them a bunch of bands doing interesting unique shit and they'll be like "okay but they're an exception" when half the scene is doing different unique shit or evolving sounds in better ways. people just ignore it because its not shoved in their face and huge like stuff from the 2000s and before was

A lot of the scene in my area has gone from live bands to people making ambient, noise, and experimental heavier sounds using vinyl records, samplers, and foot peddles. It became a thing during the pandemic when bands couldn't jam around town. I've seen a lot of artists putting out music that's more of an aphex twin approach to sound and composition.

I think the point about mainstream monoculture going away is super accurate. What's mainstream today feels less like what the majority likes and more like a plurality of what niche gets the most attention. What will be considered "classics" will likely going forward be the songs within various niches that attracted the most new faces into the group. For instance in metal right now that will likely be songs like to the hellfire and demolisher. What I think is key in making a classic within a niche is to have a solid foundation punctuated by one moment in the song that everyone is going to point to to react and clip and share. A real wow factor that people in and out of the niche can recognize as something special and impressive. Alex doing the insanely loud and inhumanly low Demolisher chant and the peak of the song, and Will's nasty animalistic screams capping off to the hellfire. These songs were defined by these brief widely shared moments, without overshadowing how well written the rest of the song is, allowing them to have staying power rather than just being remembered for that one cool part exclusively. I think what made poppy a flash in the pan in comparison is the way her songs were rooted in mainstream exploring the metal niche rather than being rooted in the niche itself. She made some cool songs that even my friends who didn't like metal at all were into, and it was a good median of what each of us liked, but since it wasn't strongly defined within the metal niche, metal heads were inevitably going to see it as a neat gimmick for a pop song and eventually forget, and then when the rapidly changing pop mainstream rotated it out of the cultural collective, it had nowhere to call home and was just sadly forgotten.

I think people are missing the train coming in for the Asian bands, which are bringing fresh energy into something that was once culturally western specific. However, if we're going to see this as a new genre instead of a cluster of genres, it will need a "big four" as rock and metal genres have done before. Currently, there is Babymetal (the creators), the Hu (the more rock side) and Bloodywood (the more metal side) in this "Asian metal" genre (if that is what we're considering). If another comes along, to fill out the fourth spot, I feel people are going to start paying attention to this snowball gaining speed, and adding to it rapidly, like what happened to nu metal in the 90's, which was also weird, quirky and fresh to us. You can definitely have 2nd waves, 3rd waves, etc. such as pop punk, but I feel the only thing that would reignite the interest, culture and publicity of rock & metal is a brand new genre. Trap metal could have done that if they weren't so niche in their sound (not saying they're bad, but they will only ever get a limited audience, like sad boi rap).

Anything with super intricate, noisy, effect-laden soundscapes like that Daughters album, the Swans trilogy albums or Gilla Band I think is a very important direction for rock and metal music. Idles I'd say is a very accessible iteration of these kinds of bands and it's super cool seeing them gain the relatively successful status they have. I think neo-psychedelia has a lot of potential too for reshaping heavier music except the only people that listen to it are, of course, goddamn hippies. Metalheads and scene people, I demand, need to infiltrate the Impala-verse

On your main channel. You should do a video on channels like equal vision and Deathwish. Cause I know you aren’t a huge fan of some of the bands. But 00s Equal vision records was really awesome. It almost had its own sound. Even with bands like Cirxa or Chiodos - they sounded different than band like A Day To Remember as far as production and style And then Death Wish in the 2010s was just killing it. And I mean Kurt ballou was killing it already- and Jane Doe was on Equal vision and produced by Kurt. And I’m sure there are other labels you could mention in that video. But just the way that different labels had their own sound in the early thousands. Not to mention Equal VISON was started by the Yourh Of Today guy. I just think it’s cool how the old school hardcore - then started producing post hardcore and stuff on equal video. And the fact that Kurt was involved with lots of those recordings. And then Jacob’s Dearh Wish also had a ton of Kurt Ballou production. For me personally those were my favorite years in music. You the man Finn. Thanks for the years of content.

Completely disagree with your take on sleep token. I personally feel like they have arguably the best shot at mainstream success right now. I think the soul/R&B side of their style could be the key. Think about an artist like The Weeknd or Sam Smith who are not too far off from that side of sleep tokens sound. Both of those artists have had a bit of an “edgier” presentation with their latest releases which tells me that their audience could be accepting of a band with an image like Sleep Token. If sleep token manages to have a song that makes waves with that particular audience, I think they have a solid shot at massive mainstream success.

I love you FInn, but I think you need to include the various genres of electronic music in your critique about artists creating innovative music. Some of the best producers are electronic music producers that produce beyond the scope of 808s and closed high hat trap beats that dominate popular rap and pop these days. There is so much innovation coming from so many producers in the bass music, IDM, EDM, dubstep, house, techno, hybrid tap, and various other electronic music genres. Look at most of the biggest festivals these days. A good percentage of festivals are mostly filled with DJs and producers DJing a multitude of genres in one set. They play or rinse out a lot of genres in the electronic music scene, and play a lot of hip hop/rap as well. Exploring that channel can further prove my point that bass/electronic music producers and djs are definitely more innovative in that they progress and push the boundaries of production, including that of hip hop/rap production. A lot of the artists are huge in the festival and pseudo underground scene, but dont get that much recognition on radio or “mainstream” outlets or by the grammys. Also, check out the artist Wreckno. The problem is most are only talking about what is trendy. A band like Holy Fawn is incredible. Not basic song structure and don’t sound like anyone else. Chat Pile is great and unique. Chelsea Wolfe is another that brings a lot of different sounds. Youth Code have really brought back the industrial sound but fused with hardcore instead of metal. In my opinion if we are talking a more rock sound it has to be something pushing boundaries and not hoping on a trend. Bands like Botch and DEP are classic bands now and they didn’t go over well when they came out.

24:30 Something about Sleep Token just grabbed me from the beginning. And every single song they've put out (save for "Chokehold") just had my attention the first 10 seconds. I can see the Dillinger comparison, though I hope they make it farther than that. If you've heard Vessel's cover of "Hey Yaaa" by Outkast, they could EASILY write some radio classics. But they'd have to choose that, and I don't think that's what ST is about.
@afroheadwes

I think they could inadvertently become super successful and have a song that propels them to that level by accident. The Weeknd kinda proved that the mainstream pop audiences are more accepting of bizarre presentation and I think Sleep Token fits that mold perfectly.

I can say I am pretty invested in the current wider scene, probably a bit too much, and still agree with most of the arguments here, it's not just an age or interest thing. Still, there are interesting things happening, but they cant build up momentum because of the whole "death of the mono culture" thing. It might be worth adding Bad Omens here BUT there are not there yet and need to really push the TFOPOM material further to maybe get there. Same with Spiritbox, as long as they continue in the Rotoscope direction. As much as I love them, I think Electric Callboy have reached their peak and cant really surprise us with anything, especially with the reaction scene arguably in something of a decline. Pretty much along what has already been said but as far as "stars" go nowadays, Ronnie, Courtney, Will Ramos are probably as close to what we consider a celebrity as you can get these days, maybe with the addition of Noah Sebastian and few others but thats about it. Looking forward to checking who was right and wrong around 2030-2040...

Honestly, I think alternative music in general has one of the brightest futures ever, as "mainstream pop culture" kinda starts to shift and fade in the eyes of everyone. There is an incredible number of young people from all over the world who get inspired by all sorts of alternative music wether it is rock, metal, rap, alt pop or electronic music and all of these scenes and their new members can now be easily connected through the internet. Gatekeeping has also kinda gone back so the probality that we see might see like a classic hit song in 5 years that is a combination of pop, riddim, trap and djent by some brazilian/vietnamese duo that met on a random ass discord server is not 0 xd In all seriousness I think the metal and rock scene is not lacking in the songwriting department I think it's lacking in overall creativity. If you have like a thousand different bands that would all upload the weirdest most nonsensical shit that was only ever meant for the musician that wrote it you'd probably be closer to finding a new classic than you'd be digging in a thousand different tracks that were all made to impress someone else and gain respect within a scene.

That's also why bands such as Portal, Chaos Echoes, Deathspell Omega, Cult Of Fire, Teitanblood, War From A Harlot's Mouth, Cephalic Carnage, Bell Witch, Mournful Congregation, Revenge and Defeated Sanity will easily stand the test of time despite being underground acts.

I'm gonna disagree with Finn regarding the song writing being weak rn. I think generally if you look at any genre's big artists good song writing is hard to come by. Knocked Loose, Khubali Khan TX, Bad Omens, Counterparts, Sunami, Zulu are all great song writers and that's literally just off the top of my head. I think if you look at top 100 charts you're bound to find out boring red state rock bands with boring lyrics

The anime fandom is pretty open to rock and metal through insert songs. Series like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen have gotten plenty of mainstream recognition. I don't know if you could consider them classics in the same way as you are describing, but with how popular anime is now, I feel like a lot of new rock and metal will be influenced by Japanese music.
