Laura Hogan, MD, Chief, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and Stony Brook Cancer Center, gives a presentation on caring for children diagnosed with cancer.
Dr. Hogan shares her personal account of having cancer herself as a child and how much progress has been made in pediatric oncology treatments. She explains that while there is an overall survival rate of 80 to 90 percent for children with cancer today, there is still much to be done to treat the late-term effects of having cancer at a young age. Dr. Hogan explains promising and exciting techniques being used at Stony Brook in collaboration with investigators world-wide, including personalized medicine and immunotherapy.
