To share additional information about 120Hz (144Hz) vs. 4K: Our months' of labs tests and focus-group studies guided our trade-off decision to go 4K@60fps over HD@144fps, that the added processing power is best allocated to doing 4K over doing 120fps/144fps for optimal experience. For achieving 4K & 120Hz, we can wait for the next generation CPUs on the horizon to become affordable.

Thanks PK. Hope you reconsider not allowing buyers of the 4k upgrade for the standard ALP to upgrade to a 4k monitor. A simple HDMI output would seem to be an easy solution, and of course 32" 4k monitors are pretty easy to get since I wouldn't expect AtGames to sell them.

That may have been the feedback interpreted from the focus group, but anyone who cares more about gameplay than screen resolution will strongly disagree. 120Hz refresh rate at any resolution would be preferred over 60Hz, especially for games like FPSes or pinball where reaction times and smooth animation provide a significant benefit to a person's performance in game. Most people are suckered into the 4K snake oil sales, thinking 4K resolution matters more than anything else. Of course a focus group is going to choose 4K resolution over 1080p or 2K, they likely think it's objectively better in every way. I guarantee most people would prefer a display with a better refresh rate in a blind comparison.

@@mg-ox5zj Yeah, it's the worse compromise between the two. They prioritized resolution when it is a less significant factor than gameplay. It would have been better to go with a 2K screen @120 considering the visual improvement at 4k is so minimal.

WO-OWWWWWWWWWW !!!!!! Holy Smoke.. They have hit it out of the park with this effort. When one considers how Atgames have been breaking new ground with both their first HD version and now this 4K followup, Atgames has single handedly opened up Virtual Pinball for the consumer masses on a scale that I would not have imagined. The features of the SSF add-on are fantastic!! I think all I can say is that I wish the DMD had been larger, but I'm not going to really complain at this point. To say that I'm really looking forward to this would be an understatement. Thanks Jon! EDIT: Oh, I hit the LIKE.. I will send you my delivery address for the 4K Pinball machine I'm going to WIN ! 😅

Pretty good upgrade overall, but 60hz is a pretty big miss IMO. Having a 2k 120hz screen would have been a much more noticeable upgrade at 32".
@Tamarocker88
@Tamarocker88 Жыл бұрын
Yep, one step forward and two steps back. For each thing they upgrade, there's something really crappy about it that kind of defeats the purpose of the upgrade. They added solenoids, but they don't sound good based on the audio in the recording (sounds like a clicky pen to me). They made the backglass significantly bigger, but in doing so, the added DMD looks waaaaaaay too small. Nevermind that the new 4K machine will likely need to have all tables repurchased, even for those who bought all the tables for the original ALP. The product is likely the better choice for someone in the market for one of the machines as a new buyer, but I don't expect many people who already own an ALP (especially those with mods and OTG FP/VPX) will be buying this.
@Tamarocker88
@Tamarocker88 Жыл бұрын
@@mg-ox5zj You can disagree if you insist, but you're wrong. The benefit of flippers and balls that look more realistic due to higher resolution is completely offset when the gameplay is choppier as a result. Gameplay trumps visuals, especially when it comes to fast action like pinball where reaction times and visual speed are top priority. All else equal, a 120Hz display provides smoother visuals and faster draw response than a 60Hz display, thus facilitating faster and better reactions to what is happening on screen. Play the same game on a 60Hz display and then on a 120Hz display and you'll react better on the 120Hz system. If humans gained no benefit from 120Hz displays, competitive FPS gamers wouldn't swear by them. The human eye can absolutely detect smoother performance in a 120Hz display. There are more frames of animation drawn on screen in the same amount of time, leading to smoother animation, especially when there are hectic long-range movements, like a pinball ricocheting around a playfield.
@johngannon
@johngannon Жыл бұрын
@@mg-ox5zj not at 32" 4k is literally unnoticeable.
@Tamarocker88
@Tamarocker88 Жыл бұрын
@johngannon FALSE. 4K resolution is noticeable on a 32" panel if your viewing distance is close enough. The recommended viewing distance for a 4k TV's resolution to be noticeable compared to an identical sized 1080p screen is 1.5x the vertical height. A 32" 4K TV has a vertical height of ~15", giving you a viewing distance of about 2 feet. Unless you're 8 feet tall, you're well within that viewing distance while playing a Legends Pinball machine, so you're absolutely going to notice the increased resolution fidelity. It's no different than being able to see the difference in resolution on a smart phone with 4K resolution despite the small screen size, because we put them much closer to our faces. Now, if someone told you that they could see the increase in resolution on their 32" 4K TV in their livingroom that sits 12 feet away from their couch compared to an identically sized 1080p screen, THEN you could tell them "it's literally unnoticeable", because at that viewing distance the human eye cannot detect the difference between 1080p and 4k.

You mentioned 2 haptic speakers would be present even without the SSF addon kit. Could you tell more about the haptic speakers? Where are they located? Do they play the same sound/music as the 3,5'' beckbox spreakers? Some SSF kit questions: - You mentioned the kit will bring 4 ssf speakers and one base shaker. Will the 4 speakers be haptic speakers or normal ones? (If not haptic, it would just be sourround sound, without feedback, right?) - How will they play together with the 2 present haptic speakers? I assume the SSF kit will handle the mechanic/ball sounds, the Non-SSF speakers will handle music/effects and no mechanic sounds when SSF is present? Thanks for all your work and great videos.

Excellent questions and thank you for your kind comments! The x2 haptic speakers that are included are essentially the same as those included with the ALP HD and located on the apron. Regarding the SSF kit, those are great questions that we'll find out when I evaluate it at a later time. That will likely become it's own dedicated video at that point.

You may have mentioned this - but do you think AtGames will be selling this for the Xmas season this year? Hopefully they will still sell it through Sam's Club as well.

Much appreciated Michael! In #7 here, you'll find the intention for deliveries to begin Dec. 15th: wagnerstechtalk.com/alp4kevt/#Q_A . This was provided to me by AtGames and their official response. It's likely going to depend on when the order is placed and the number of units available. Regarding their distribution channels, I don't have any information on that.

Glad you're enjoying the series! I'm not seeing a brightness issue on the ALP HD here when set for afternoon mode. The colors are more saturated on the 4KP, likely due to the sharper panel. But in terms of brightness levels, they are similar, please see 10:15 for an accurate representation of what I'm seeing on both displays. This video was shot in 4K and the most accurate representation I could make (you may need to click the cog wheel icon in the video to view it in 4K).

Wagner, These videos are awesome! Thank you! I think the main issue I had with the sound on the original Legends Pinball was going from Gottlieb tables to Magic Pixel. Had to adjust the volume every time I went between publisher brands. This is something I hope they fix for the new 4K model. One question about the solenoids. How do they feel when bumpers are hit? Sounded like the flippers sound great, but curious about the bumpers. Thanks again! vgv

Thank you videogamevegas, much appreciated my friend! The solenoids fire when the flippers are pressed, I definitely feel the effect through the cabinet. In this v1.0 cabinet, they are loud and sound/feel great. They don't fire, however, when the bumpers are hit. The SSF (accessory) may change the experience, that is speculation based on some information shared in this video. Hoping to one day be able to demonstrate and provide more information on it.

Wagner, Thank you for the updated info! I'll tell you, for me, though I love feedback when a pinball hits a bumper (i.e. with my Xbox360 controller), it's by no means a dealbreaker when it comes to the upcoming AtGames 4K pinball. Yes, it would be nice, but flipper feedback is more the sufficient for me :) I'm just glad you were able to answer as it was something I was interested in. Here's what I want to see from the 4K if I decide to get it. I want it to be a plug and play solution to hook up a PC Pinball solution where it's just plugging in connections (hdmi's for monitor connections and a usb for onboard controls). If it can do that, there are many ready made Pinball collection solutions one can procure to add to a PC. I just want to plug said PC into the Legends 4K and just have it work. And yes, it may take a bit more than that, but if it's not much more and still simple for me, then I'm in :) Thanks again Wagner! vgv

@@videogamevegas We'll be exploring OTG in Part 3. May take a little longer on that one, as it takes time to tweak/configure things just right and a lot of stuff to test. I should be receiving an updated CE-4k firmware on or around Monday and will begin testing that with the latest build. I get most of my testing/editing done on the weekends so this may push out the next video a little longer than the past 1&2. I also did directly mention to AtGames about the solenoids firing when hitting the bumpers. If I hear anything back on that I'll update the page. Having the 3 HDMI ports at the back should make it as plug-n-play as possible. With a PC, there will always be some tweaking required as there are so many different computers with various GPU's that will always add some level of customization.

Wagner, So looking forward to the next part! However, take the time you need. I feel videos can greatly benefit from care and extra time. That's how I approach my own videos. In fact, the video I'm working on now, a review for the iiRcade Dragon's Lair Gold Edition, has been quite the task, but I want to be proud of what I release, so it will take the time it needs to do that. Plus, I like to schedule time for life and all that as well :) What I would LOVE to see AtGames do, or consider, but I don't know if they'd get into trouble with Arcade1Up, but I would LOVE to see them do that "middle-sized" design VPin at the same size and dimensions of an Arcade1Up with 3 screens and at 4K (just with smaller monitors, of course). The 4K (as well as the ALP I have now) are too big to fit in my main home arcade's configuration, and the Micro, though cool, is just too tiny for what I want to play on, on the reg. But I'm going to step back a bit and let AtGames make this new wonderful 4K product first. After they have this one out, maybe they can take a look at an "in-between" size of their two extremes :) vgv

If we compare to the current cab and price and then look at the improvements, typically multiply by 2.5 to get what they need to charge to make a profit (use 3 is mainly retail channels selling). I would be surprised if this is not at least $600 more. If better chipset and display to support 120hz, add another $600.
@Tamarocker88
@Tamarocker88 Жыл бұрын
As stated in the video, the 4k panel is only 60Hz, so that's a huge negative point against this system. For someone who doesn't currently own an ALP, the 4K variant is the clear winner (assuming the price is competitive, which I doubt it will be since you can buy a new ALP from Sam's Club for $400), but I don't see many people who already own a unit, modded or not, buying one of these. The solenoids are a negligible upgrade, they sound like the quality is on par with the built in haptics IMO. Adding in real solenoids would be a better use of the funds. The SSF upgrade is practically a necessity, if not also the haptics kit from BSA. Then there's the dinky little DMD that sticks out like a sore thumb. People like me have been able to add a 15" 1080p LCD as a FullDMD for as little as $80! It would have made more sense to make the built in DMD at least 10", or better yet 12". It's improved over the original, but it's still missing the mark if we're all being honest.

@@Tamarocker88 The 60hz is an issue for me as well, but cost would be high. I might just make a hillbilly set up with 43” 120hz and use my current 24” as backglass that I’m using with the ALP now. @@rushmore3927 Some physics engines for some tables are locked at 60Hz as of right now. Given that the OTG scenes for FP and VPX are constantly evolving, it's a better long-term investment to have 120Hz than 60Hz. Only a matter of time until the physics engines are improved and support 120Hz.

Great video. I'm still really disappointed that AtGames is offering the 4k upgrade for the standard ALP without the ability to upgrade the screen. I'm thoroughly enjoying the 4KP. As you may already know, one of the machines from the Pinball Expo was sent to me to check out. There are a few differences between the machine I have here and the EVT. Primarily: 1) The Addams Family skin, builders plate and coin door. The unit here has the coin door off-center, but will be corrected for customers based on this: wagnerstechtalk.com/alp4k/#Latest_Updates 2) The solenoids are software controlled, you can adjust the strength 3) The SSF kit was pre-installed and sounds great (more on that in this video, if interested : wagnerstechtalk.com/alp4k ) I stay out of the pricing aspects, I only focus on the technical side of things.

The likelihood is extremely low. They want you to buy a new system. This is further cemented by the fact that the two systems have dedicated table formats, so tables purchased on the HD system cannot be played on the 4KP and vice versa. Or at least like with surround sound feed back offer a solenoid upgrade kit. My arcade 1 up pinball had solenoids that fired when hit bumpers and I’ve since completely gutted but I think we defiantly need more then just the two. So excited for this machine and excited for the fact that at games is taking feedback from you. Again thanks for the reviews.
