It's not new. Presidents always had legal immunity. The only difference is, America wasn't ever so corrupt that parties would weaponize the legal system against a president or former president before. Now it is that corrupt, so the courts merely reminded them that, yes, the President has always had immunity. (Unless he's impeached.)
