I got my first electric bike for review - the Cowboy 4 ST. It gave me lots to think about the future of e-bikes, bikes and urban mobility in general.

It'd be awesome to have a feature in the app to share the bike location so we could hunt your bike as a community. I really hope the battery lasts long enough so you can find it after Easter. About whoever stole your bike....you should start keeping a record of times they seem to be out riding it, and just by doing that you can get an idea of what kind of person you're looking for. For example, kids go to school during certain times of the day, and adults tend to go to work at similar times each day of the week. That could give you an idea of whether you're looking for a kid, working adult, or non-working adult, and then you could predict what times they're most likely to be out riding it, and if you build an idea of the locations they like to frequent, you could plan to be in the area ahead of time BEFORE they even begin riding your bike, which would give you a better chance of catching them. Its a way for you to turn chaotic randomness into useful information. Best of luck! Can you tell i've had plenty of bikes stolen?? Lmao.

As a soon to be mechanical engineer, one of the biggest advantages of conventional bikes is that they use standard components. You can swap out handlebars, brakes, pedals, gears, chains, wheels etc. without having to buy a specific brand. While many (usually cheaper) e-bikes luckily still use standard bike components, many (like this Cowboy or Van Moof) try to lock you into their """"ecosystem"""" with their sleek design and app integration features. This means that your bike is much more likely to age quicker and become "obsolete", or at the very least cost much more to maintain. Bikes were the final mode of transport that had a feeling of longevity about them, and I hope e-bikes won't change that too much.

Agreed most of the ebikes sold in the netherlands use default parts vs these designer brands which only make up a small part of the sales here. This included the electric parts which are mostly made by 4 or 5 providers. Even with that stated if you use a more complex bike (thats what a ebike is) compared to a normal one i prefer to add support from the company you get it from many here provide 3 years service at home.

I just got a hub motor, made a battery and converted an old mountain bike in less than an hour for less than €800 and et voila. 2kW and 80+km range. I'd recommend it to everyone. Just ride sensibly and considerately. Absolutely no point buying a fluffed up designer theft magnet when you can upgrade your own bike, and make it look quirky and undesirable.

The repairebility isnt gone at a VanMoof. I dont know about cowboy, but you can get all VanMoof replacement parts from the support to repait it youself, except for the battery, because it cannot shipped legaly due to high capacity. I already switched the lock of somebodys VanMoof because he had an accident with a car. Was super easy with the tutorial from VanMoof. Making 90% of the parts themselve isn't a bad thing if you can get this parts yourself. Self produced parts makes the bike more complete, more safe and more resistant to damge, because the parts are designd for each other and not just randomly put together

As someone who searched a lot for an ebike and end up building my own. I kinda find it sad that no influencer that "reviews" these things mention anything about the repairability and availability of spare parts, repair manuals or tools. Every fancy designer bike like the one in this video that I saw either lacks in performance, range, repairability or all of the above and almost all of them are usually marked up 2 folds compared to the one you can build yourself. Not to mention that you can upgrade and configure every part of the generic of the shelf system in contrast to these glorified theft magnets with big marketing budgets. They all advertise as having a 250w motor but when you compare the torque figures they are just severely lacking. For example the 45 nm of cowboy 4 vs 80 nm that you get from a fairly cheap bafang motor. Having only one battery size option is also a downside that no one mentions.
@degroot50
@degroot50 2 жыл бұрын
Thats exactly the reason I don't like factory made ebikes, I prefer a normal proper bike with a Bafang BBS motor. Only thing is the PAS mode and not torque. But thats no problem with the modifyable software.

This argument is roughly equivalent to "I don't get why people buy overpriced Playstations and overpriced Playstation games if they can just build there own customizable gaming PC that's also cheaper." Alternatively: "I don't understand how people buy iPhones if they can buy Androids for half the price and customize the shit out of them". The Answer in all cases is: Different products for people with different needs and requirements. There is no universal "right or wrong".
@PO0YA
@PO0YA 2 жыл бұрын
@Gormilein it's more like not comparing an iphone with existing android options when you are reviewing an iphone. Sure it has a worse camera sure you cannot repair it but it is more expensive so someone may need it. So I as a reviewer won't even mention those problems. Look how shiny it is! I didn't say don't buy expensive bikes. There are bikes that cost 3 times as much as a vanmoov! I said it is sad that the reviews fail to mention the existence of objectively better options (and problems) considering these videos are also introducing ebikes and compelling people to switch to them in general.
@Gormilein
@Gormilein 2 жыл бұрын
@@PO0YA No... not "objectively" better. Subjectively better. Better for you. Better for your needs and requirements. Objectively not better for someone who cares a lot about the design of the bike. Objectively not better for someone who doesn't really care about the cost. Objectively not better for someone who will never fix the bike by themselves anyway. That's my point. There is no "objectively superior" product category. Most iPhone reviews infact do not compare against half as expensive Android phones, because they are aimed at a very different customer base.

@@cyclingzen There are plenty of gear hubs on the market because of e-bikes. Some with massive range. I think the new player Kindernay has the biggest gear range, they even made a 7 gear version that has the same range as their 14 gear model. Lower number of gears better fits e-bike needs (if they still cover a good range). Other than that you have the classic Rohloff, NuVinci (Enviolo) with continuous gears, good old Sturmey Archer and Shimano Alfine (not that realiable). I'm fan of gear hubs on normal bikes and before e-bikes grew in popularity it was a dying segment. It's nicie to see that this little marvels of mechanics are finding a new niche.

Vanmoof has gears on the current 3 series, but they don't work very well. Instead of going with a tried and tested system from Shimano or whatever, they made a proprietary automatic electronic shifter, paired with a low quality internal hub. @@cyclingzen yeah I have a seven speed carbon belt bike and the lowest gear is still too high for hill climbing, and struggles with casual run for groceries with a trailer for heavier stuff like cans of soda. If you consider an electric bike, please make sure that it uses off the shelf components at least for the brakes and the shifting. This way, you're getting components that work reliably and are repairable by any bike shop. Shimano has 13k employees working mainly on bike components, that just shows mow much engineering goes into them to make them good and reliable. Vanmoof is especially bad in this, they build everything on the bike themselves (it breaks often and repairing it is hard, according to a few online sources). The brakes on your cowboy also look like a design from them.

I own a VanMoof and its not braking often. The only problem I had was flat tires. Thats normal on a bike. Just put kevlar band in it and now the tires are okay for over 2000km. I got one battery problem, because of a bad production line. They couldnt send me one over to swap it myself, because it cannot shipped legaly. But thats a Problem every ebike can run into. And all other parts are self repairable. You just go to the website, enter your problem and you will get the parts. You can even go with the parts to an bikeshop. Sadly, most repair shops wont accept them, because they think its complicated or just dont want to. The repairs are really easy. Most "niche" manufacturers like Cowboy, can seem cool due to sleek and unique design, but they also come with a very high price premium. The bike costs 3000€, which is about 1000€ premium over some other fully rigid electric bikes. Sure this one has integrated lights and wireless charging for your phone, but it's definitely not worth a 50% increase in price. I've been mountain biking for all my life, and it's commonplace for bicycle price to vary within a category of bikes by 30% even if the bikes have the same components. Electric bicycles are cool, but you should think about if you need an electric bicycle. If you don't need to climb hills and the commute is less than 3 km, it's better to just get a normal higher quality bicycle than an electric one.

I have been using ebike for food delivery for 2 years now and i rode around 15,000 kms. I would recommend to an ebike which share parts with other ebikes as those parts are widely available. In Canada, brands such as Amego, Emmo and NCM share 90% of the parts and are easily available online as well as offline. Display, controller, and motor all are connected to each other through connectors which means anyone can replace them at home with minimal effort. Moreover replacing a battery is also cheaper in these bikes as compared to brands like Stromer and Aventor.

They carry bolt-cutters that can slice through any flexible locks and all but the thickest rigid versions in minutes. If they can't easily slice through your lock, they've smash the bike instead. The police don't pursue bike thefts and they know that. Couple this reality with those American-style multi-lane city roads and large distances between venues. I own a Cowboy V3 for one year and 3700km, and am happy to see you made a video about Cowboy! I would highly recommend people to check out the V3. It's way cheaper. You can have a universal smartphone mount (KokoX). And the paddling pace is much better than on the V4. I see the lack of gears as a good thing, less moving parts which could break. VanMoof uses the eshifter, which doesn't sound that well built so I prefer this simple system. For theft, I have a *** Kryptonite lock, an airtag, the built in GPS and insurance. So far it has survived one year in a big city. This bike made cycling much more fun then it used to be, so I cycled much more than usual. 10/10👌

My experience is that you do have to do some maintenance on the belt as well. Mine broke after about half a year without maintenance (and I just have a regular non-electric bike). Add in the brake pads, the washing, and all the other things that break and bend - in total, the maintenance is the thing that i dislike the most about bicycles - although it's a lot less expensive than with a car.

Most have some sort of hanger for groceries or hanger assessor. Usually you can enter in every store/office with a scooter (as long as you are not driving them). For the distance - sweat. If you live in a warm place, using a normal bike/scooter to get to the office in the morning means you are gonna stink like a skunk for the entire day. The problem is compounded if you live in a hot place with a lot of hills. The colleagues that use electric scooters use them for that purpose. I've always tried to walk to wherever i needed to go, but if you get to 1-2 hour walk to work or 15 mins with a scooter, its an easy choice. If you fit a rear rack (I don't understand why it doesn't come with one) it can carry plenty. e.g. my panniers can take 40L of stuff. You could even attach a cargo trailer if you need to carry something bulkier, e.g. a furry friend. But yes, I would agree this is not the best bike for someone who needs to shift stuff around with them as they ride. Thankfully there are other options out there if that's what you need. You also have to consider there is no tax, insurance, parking or other costs to pay once you've made the purchase. So if it can replace e.g. a hatchback for you, then it pays for itself relatively quickly. Many countries have tax breaks and incentives for purchasing bikes too, which will further reduce the sting of that upfront price.

Generally speaking all electric bikes have max assistance of 250W due to EU regulations, but it's the torque figure that is the most important value. I don't know what motor this one has, but the 45 nm of torque is very low for a bike that lacks gears. For reference top end motors produce ~90 nm.
@martian9999
@martian9999 2 жыл бұрын
best way is to have high-torque and (if you're going single speed) a lower gear ratio. Electric power then gets you going from standing, and you don't need to pedal so quickly at higher speeds.
@Gormilein
@Gormilein 2 жыл бұрын
There is also a big difference if the motor is directly on the wheel (like here) or on the chain in the middle (which is the most common one). @@matozka1083 I'd guess the limited takeoff in most of the world has less to do with bike theft and moreso the extreme lacking of infrastructure. I live in a (relatively small) student town in Belgium where basically evryone bikes. And I do mean everyone. Okay, they might not be a lot of electric bikes, but still bikes. There's also an extremely large amount of bycicle thefts. Like a lot. If you go to the police to report your bike theft it's basically only to be part of a statistic. Heard stories of the police saying "welcome to the system, either find your bike and steal it back, or just find another one". But despite the absurd rate of stealing bikes, everyone still bikes, because the infrastructure for it exists. Which it doesn't in London or Chicago.

My biggest question about how you say for how the motor works, does it overcompensate against you uphill? I live in a mountanous area, and there are many roads that are very steep, One thing I'd want from an electric bike is to not have to push myself so hard on the uphills.
@knijk
@knijk 2 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the Cowboy but I have a Cube with a pretty standard Bosch mid-motor. The amount of assistance the engine gives depends on how much force you're applying when pedaling. When going uphill, it'll detect me having to push harder so the engine also starts working harder, meaning I need to push less hard in the end. I also have a derailleur with 9 gears and where I live that's plenty to make hills comfortable to deal with. Also, if you get a more powerful engine that's designed for dealing with steep hills, you'll have less need for relying on gears. Since the Cowboy seems to be designed for city environments, I'm guessing it's not one of those.

I just got a lectric XP 2.0 a month and a half ago and Id say I ride it roughly 10 times as much as I rode my old regular bike, the hills and wind here are brutal so having that extra 500 watts on your side makes an insane difference. I can keep speed up so its more fun to me, it can haul a decent bit of cargo up the hills so its more practical, and so far I've had about 6 people stop and ask me about it (e-bikes arent very popular here aside from the ones the city rents out, I've seen maybe 5 other ebikes in the past year). I was a bit worried when I bought it as Ive never actually bought a bike before, only gotten old hand-me-downs, so 1k seemed like a ton for it, but its totally worth it, and Ill be more than willing to dish out more for a new one when this one dies. My only regret is not buying it sooner.

I bought an Engwe EP-2 Pro recently (very similar bike to the Lectric XP 2.0) and I love it. As a 28 year old who never bothered getting his driving license, I've never felt such a sense of freedom in my life. I too have an old foldable push bike. Riding it began to feel like a chore, so I decided to put it in long-term storage. The handlebars aren't adjustable, so the riding position is hunched over, which kills my back. Don't have that problem with my e-bike since it has fully adjustable handlebars. I sit in an upright position on it and it's so comfortable. I've put a wide seat and a suspension seatpost on it since the bike only comes with front suspension. I've essentially turned it into a cruiser that can go offroad and I couldn't be happier.

I severely doubt e-bikes will ever really be the future as a result of a lot of cities not being planned for them, though many are trying to remedy this. The tech is cool and all, but the insurance app and smartphone companion app really feels like it is trying to sell "transportation as service" instead of an outright product. Also carbon fiber chains while quieter are far far less durable and much weaker to abrasions. This is why they are typically set up as a belt drive that can only be used in a single gear to reduce the stress they undergo.
@Gormilein
@Gormilein 2 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of e-bikes doesn't even have an app. And also the Cowboy shown here is fully functional without a phone or any additional monthly payment as long as you bring your key. Also many cities, especially in Europe, actually ARE accomodating for bikes. Your point about carbon belts is also not true. Quite the opposite actually. A high quality belt drive from e.g. Gates lasts SIGNIFICANTLY longer than a chain (6k km vs. ~ 30k km). Also the point about gears is simply not true. Hub gearing is super common with belt drive bikes. I don't know where you get your info from.

Speed governors wouldn't be a bad idea for cars, both from a safety and emissions perspective. Cap the low gears to 30 kph and the high gears to 100, IMO. Urban driving and highway driving should be distinct enough to implement that even for automatic gearboxes. As for the bike limit, I see it as a problem of the times. We don't have the infrastructure, experience or education for higher speeds to be safe. Electric scooters already cause horrendous accidents at a constant rate. Bikes are arguably easier to ride, but you experience just as much kinetic energy if you get launched at speed from one - speed kills (or rather the sudden stop will).
@EdLrandom
@EdLrandom 2 жыл бұрын
@@Slugbunny It's mostly the paternalistic attitude I despise in-laws of this kind. We live in a time where it's technologically possible to limit speed digitally so we accept it regarding new things in our life we will refuse to limit old things in this way. The truth is it's more complicated than stupid bike riders will go too fast because they are stupid. The biggest danger for bike riders is cars, it feels scary when a car cuts you off even if you are inside of one yet for people on bikes it should be fine? Also over 25kph is dangerous but if going downhill on any bike you can easily reach 60kph, should we install mandatory automatic braking for everyone too? There are better ways to limit speed, and it's street design, both for cars and bikes. Wider roads mean more speed is possible and encouraged as your turning radius is way longer, narrow paths in areas where everyone needs to go slower, or even sling turns on the road or bike path. This idea that fast scooters and bike riders will start running over pedestrians is ridiculous, if I want to go over 40kph on my EUC I go into traffic with cars, the last thing I want is to hit a pedestrian because unlike being in a car guess what? I will also fall.
@EdLrandom
@EdLrandom 2 жыл бұрын
@@TechAltar Why can't I then remove this limitation when going on the road on my e-bike and go as fast as cars do so there are no accidents? Also what if I'm on in the city, does the limitation disables outside of the city? Street design should prevent people from going too fast no invasive design of your own bikes.

Euro-city bike culture is so different than here in Tasmania AU. Bikes are becoming super popular here, because every town is building epic mountain biking trail networks to attempt to become the next big thing. So I've barely seen or considered an urban cruiser like yours - everything is dual suspension MTB. Ebikes are popular & are the future, but at at least A$8,000 for a decent dually, most people still use regular and catch the shuttle buses to the top of the trails. While I like the idea of commuting on a bike, I'm going to be spending my $ on more capable MTB's which aren't very suitable for commuting 🤣 But eMTB are absolutely sick 🤙 as you can ride 3x more awesome trails because you're exhausted - which usually happens before the battery goes flat.
