The Future of Women in Politics: Ellen Malcolm
Ellen Malcom, founder of the political action committee, EMILY’s List, speaks about fundraising for female political candidates. This lecture was organized in memory of Monica Dennis Goldberg. EMILY’s List is an acronym that stands for “Early Money Is Like Yeast - it makes the dough rise.” The purpose of EMILY’s List is to get more female candidates elected by fundraising early in the campaign. Malcom explains why and how she founded EMILY’s List and reviews some of the issues she sees female candidates experiencing across the country. She lists reasons that she commonly sees cited for why “women can’t win” and counters them with examples of successful women who have won their respective elections. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
Recorded Feb. 24, 1994 at 92nd Street Y, New York.
