Dr. Mary Claire Haver, board-certified OBGYN, explains the DIFFERENCE between the Galveston Diet and Traditional ketosis. Traditional ketosis is extremely inflammatory for most people; however the Galveston Diet recognizes that not all fats (or carbohydrates for that matter) are created equally; we focus on lowering inflammation rather than promoting it.

- About Dr. Mary Claire Haver and The Galveston Diet -
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a passionate women’s health advocate who believes women in midlife deserve to live their best life. She cuts through fat-shaming and fads, so women are empowered with the science behind anti-inflammation nutrition.
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a wife, mom, physician, and entrepreneur who has devoted her adult life to women’s health. As a Board-Certified OBGYN in the Houston area, Dr. Haver has delivered thousands of babies, completed thousands of well-woman exams, counseled patients, taught residents, and did everything an academic professor and OBGYN could do.
As her patient population aged, Dr. Haver was overwhelmed with the number of complaints and concerns her patients had with weight gain while going through menopause. For years, she told her patients to eat less and exercise more. It wasn't until she experienced the changes of menopause and mid-life weight gain that she realized this advice doesn't work and ultimately led to her creating and developing a new program, The Galveston Diet.
The Galveston Diet is the first and only nutrition program created by a Female OBGYN, designed for women in menopause. The Galveston Diet helps women reach their health and wellness goals through an anti-inflammatory approach to nutrition. Dr. Haver believes in food's power to combat inflammation and highly recommends the unlimited benefits of intermittent fasting. As part of her ongoing research, she became certified in Culinary Medicine in 2019, specializing in medical nutrition.

I honestly had no idea about the Galveston diet, but after researching how the body processes fat/creates estrogen (via fat) post menopause, it just made sense to drop sugar, bready carbs, alcohol and caffeine for a period of time. As a lifelong athlete and ski patroller, I got tired of feeling bloated and gaining weight just by looking at food. Spring of '20, I started the journey with a 48 hr water fast.. then re-introduced caloric intake with a shake recipe I created that included nut butters, coconut milk, berries, kale, ripe banana, chia seeds and unsweetened cocoa. Throughout that summer into late Fall, I continued intermittent fasting, shakes, salads, tons of greens like kale/chard/spinach, proteins, and minimal carbs etc.. and lost 15 lbs, most of which I've been able to keep off for nearly a year. About 2 weeks into the process, I lost all craving for processed sugar and carby stuff like pasta, bread etc.. My hot flashes disappeared, and I had A Lot more energy. I can attest to this concept..it absolutely works for those of us dealing with significant hormonal changes. I'm very glad to learn the Galveston diet exists! It not only affirms my own experience, but know I can turn to it for motivation and guidance when I fall off the wagon.

I just looked at the free five day meal plan and I saw no grains, beans, fruit, and a little bit of veggies. I have to say it looked like clean keto to me.

I have been doing keto and IF for 2.5 years. I've lost and been maintaining my weight successfully. I eat a balanced diet as per keto. I question anyone eating large steaks, gorging on bacon etc and stating they are doing keto..my typical diet consists of healthy greens and fruits etc, healthy fats such as avocados, avocado oil, olive oil, butter, nuts fish etc. I have found my digestive system does not tolerate gluten very well, so I choose low carb bread on occasion, not fussed with bread tbh, I make all my own baked goods using almond flour and coconut flour. Being keto is not an excuse to gorge on cheese etc. This sounds more like the atkins to me..im not an expert by any means. This is just my experience. My skin and hair and overall health has never been better. My bloods are all normal, cholesterol is doing well. It's all about eating in moderation. Well done on developing this program specifically for menopausal women. Much needed as keto etc is not for everyone.

Thanks @drhaver I’ve been on the Galveston diet for 3+weeks. I love the 3x principles, was able to very quickly wrap my head around them and within the 1st week I adjusted to adopting pretty much all 3. Ive dropped .8kg which is great but honestly the feeling of energy and somewhat control I have back around my eating is priceless. I’m in this for long and healthy haul!! 💚✅🥗 Thankyou 🙌🏽 Ps. 54yo bc thriving mama!

I have done keto in the past with success. I did loose weight and felt better. But I missed fruit especially apples. I bought the Galveston diet audio and book in hopes this would be the perfect lifestyle for me. Unfortunately after putting in the macros for fat, carbs and protein I wouldn’t be able to eat a apple. Unless I’m doing something wrong an apple would put me over for carbs. It would seem this diet is just as restrictive in carbs as keto. The fat in Galveston diet is definitely a healthy way of eating, I’m just disappointed that the carbs are as restrictive as keto. I have learned a lot from Dr.Haver she has truly change my life. I have great respect for all her research and the education she has provided.

I’d like to add that she does mention in the book that once you go into “maintenance mode” you will then increase your carbs to 40% protein 40% and fat at 20%. The low carb at 10% is just at the beginning of the journey. To allow your body to adjust to a healthy hormonal level. Once there though boost up the numbers. Hope that helps 🤗

Keto is not.unhealthy fats either. Just because some people, even prominent ones, have touched eating a lb of bacon and sticks of butter in a day, doesn't mean that they're doing keto correctly. Bacon is fine in moderation. Healthy fats have always been preferable on keto

I lost weight on a very strict keto diet through a weight loss clinic but also tons of my hair, it was horrible. I want to be thinner but also healthy. Since I went off this diet I have gained back all the weight I lost plus more. My body hurts so bad every day, I am hoping this will help me. Desperate😥

Since we use an antiinflammatory approach to health and nutrition - our students report less body aches, less hot flashes, sleepig better and feeling great! AND - if they needed to lose weight!

My cholesterol went down a lot after 1 year on clean keto. My blood glucose went back into normal range on my metabolic panel. My A1C was great. However, it did not lower my BP, still on medications.
