The whole experience showed him what is really important. Traumatic, yes, but necessary to bring Nicholas into the empathic world. .., and led him to hooking up with the waitress :) SO yeah retrospectively for him, I think he ultimately loved what his "birthday gift" did for him. Yes it's difficult to process first time around. I love this movie !!!!!!!!!!!! Such a crazy ride. Much respect.

Love how the movie keeps teasing us the audience at the beginning of the movie: “profound life experience” “for I was blind and now I can see”. Really sets the tone and doesn’t disappoint. To me it really was one of the best things to happen to Michael’s character because he now appreciates those closest to him (his brother/ex wife). That kind of trauma or dramatic stuff happening to you makes you appreciate the little things. His brother (Sean Penn) even says it when he hugs him at the end “Sorry, you were becoming such an asshole”. As they embraced. Beautiful surprise and twists at the end

Thrill & suspense all throughout. AGREE, when we watch this film we are confused right along with Nicholas{Mike Douglas} as the film unfolds. The twists are so great!!! If you are "Game" for another suspense thriller, suggest 'Star Chamber' - 1983 film. This also stars Michael Douglas!!
@gluuuuue
@gluuuuue Жыл бұрын
What I love most about this film isn't just the paranoid-suspense-mystery thriller structure and overall execution (which are amazing), but story's themes and thesis. Nicholas is a man at the top of society-financially, economically, and thus socially, that is-in a *sense* anyway, yet something about his perpetually morose and somber demeanor, in everything he does, is hollow and empty. He feels little to no joy in anything in life. We often don't *really* come face to face with our own priorities, what we care about most in life, until we've lost just about everything. Notice the order in which CRS methodically strips these values away, or what Nick *believes* he values most: - when they "reject" him from the game (his privilege automatically getting him everywhere, his high valuing of his time) - when he finds the doll and brings it inside his home (intruding on is his place of (psychological) comfort by manipulation) - when his shirt gets ruined, first by the pen, then Christine/Claire "spilling" stuff on him (his imperturbability) - his expensive clothing items and accessories (that he always wears the best luxury items) - his vandalized home (trashing his home and place of safety, apparently threatening his housekeeper) - the hotel room with the drugs and porn (threatening his reputation) - when he mistakenly believes it's his subordinate trying to blackmail him (his ability to accurately perceive and grasp his situation) - when he thinks he's lost the keys to not only his personal wealth but that which he managed for his companies and shareholders (his primary professional function) - when he wakes up in Mexico (access to all his normal and usual resources) - when Conrad appears "for the party" only for Nick to shoot him (his sense of reality, his brother, whom he still loves despite thinking he's a fuckup in life) - when he thinks he's ending it all (his own life) And, in the end, all those things he ended up caring most about-his brother, his ex-wife, his friends, and ultimately his own life-were all still there. Yeah, it's "tough love", all really damn demented actually, to say nothing of illegal af, but he's a man who appeared to have so much, to have everything, and they provided what was lacking. CRS had the power to take everything from him and, creating the illusion of doing just that, did what they said they would do.

I'm glad you reacted as positively as you did. A lot of people who watch this movie get hung up on how improbable some of the events are, but they're missing the brilliance of the film. The entire point of "the game" was to strip Nicholas of the wealth and work that were socially isolating him. He needed to be left, a broken husk in a foreign country, to finally force him to discard that watch and the emotional burden it represented. It was all about having some humanity, connection and fun re-injected back into his life. That's what the movie's really about. It's almost like a modern re-telling of A Christmas Carol, but with the holiday setting discarded. Nicholas Van Orton is our 1990's Ebeneezer Scrooge.

That final twist reminded me of the Sixth Sense, those incredible and unexpected endings that blew your mind. Arlington Road with Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins, has another ending of that style too, which leaves you shocked. It's not at all easy for a screenwriter to imagine a twist ending, one that surprises viewers and takes them out of the obvious places they expect.

There were a whole string of movies in the 90s with these twist- like endings including The Usual Suspects, Sixth Sense, Fight Club, Exotica, etc.. I think one of the reasons The Game isn't as well adored as others is because there are many scenes where you have to suspend your disbelief in how the company can pull off some of the hijinks. Also, Douglas's character isn't the most likable. I love this movie though and the perfect ending with Douglas seemingly taking up Claire's invitation for coffee as a metaphor for him loosening up his rigid lifestyle. And the movie hangs on his answer just like the whole movie before where we are hanging on every note.

This is an excellent suspenseful film......acting is top notch. How many people are just sleepwalking through their lives, and need a wake up call. Covid was sort of something like that, for most people but his specific journey was insane....

Just checking some of these older reviews since i only started watching you about 3 months ago. I saw this movie when it first came out. I am also a big Michael Douglas fan since the mid 70s. Watching this originally I thought ..."how could they be so horrible to poor Michael? " I really got caught up in this movie. Other ones at the time were Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction but for me , his best was Black Rain.

My favorite Michael Douglas movie is Wonder Boys with Toby Maguire, Robert Downy Jr, Frances McDormand among other notable names. Really a wonderful film.

Good movie - one that is sadly overlooked. As man well north of forty-five years, I can say the film hits harder in middle-age.

Agreed. I first saw this in my mid-30s. I'm now in my mid-50s, and you're right -- it does hit harder now. Much harder.
