Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in their "man to man" fight because that's what everybody expects from Arnie, but it was Arnie himself who said "I can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man," so it was rewritten with Dutch losing the fight and having to use his wits to prevail. When I read that, I couldn't help thinking of how certain contemporary action stars' egos could never bear being shown getting their asses kicked on screen.

My brother worked on The Player, a TV action show starring Wesley Snipes. He said that Snipes' ego wouldn't allow his character to lose a fight. Snipes' conception of his characters was basically that they are so highly trained and skilled that they simply can't lose. Which tends to make for crappy drama. But he gets away with it because he's stypically the main draw of any show/movie he's in.

Not explosions because it's a fantasy movie based on the novels written by Robert E. Howard, but Conan is one of the three most iconic Arnie movies (the other two being Predator and The Terminator). Billy had resigned himself to his fate. He knew he would die, but he was going to stand instead of run, perhaps give his friends some extra time. He also cut himself because he wanted to take the first blood away from the Predator, a small mind-game victory, but still a victory.

The helicopter scene at the beginning…like you said, it isn’t quite stealth, but it’s as close as you can get. My father was in Vietnam and they’d do night insertions into the jungle. The helicopters would fly in formation with one trailing without its beacon lights activated. They would fly around the area while the one running dark would come in and drop off the men, then all fly away. Unless you where right there under them it just looks like some helicopters were flying around the area. You can’t tell that one dropped off some men. The scene in the movie isn’t very dark, but if it was it wouldn’t work very well on camera.

This movie is a staple in sci-fi cinema despite mixed reviews upon release. The practical effects are masterful and the directing style by McTeirnan is very particular to his keen sense of awareness. All the tension and suspense are this directors' trademarks and the reveals are perfectly timed. The action is intense and the characters are all likeable in their own way even with limited screen time. The creature itself is celebrated among all movie lovers and noted as one of cinemas greatest antagonists. Film Note: Van Damme was the original Predator in a different costume but it looked awful and, depending on what you believe, he was fired from the movie for various unconfirmed reasons. Also, the sounds the predator makes are done by the guy who does Optimus Prime.

Late actor, Kevin Peter Hall who was 7FT 2Inches stepped in as the Predator because it was rumored that Van Damme was too short for the role as Predator. They wanted Predator taller than Arnold. Just a bit of FYI trivia: There's a comic book called "Billy's Last Stand" that depicts fight on the log bridge against the Predator. Short story even shorter, it shows Billy doing surprisingly well fighting blade vs. blade and the Predator resorting to using its invisibility to get behind him and stab him in the back. There was a Predator 2 sequel two issue comic published by Dark Horse Comics which, like the movie showed another Predator hunting in a violent crime ridden urban environment, but the comic was set in New York instead of Los Angeles, and the protagonist was Dutch's older brother Mike instead of Danny Glover. Mike had a great cynical catchphrase whenever somebody expressed alarm. My favorite example it was when someone was afraid of what the Predator species could do if humans tried to forbid them from hunting. The other character said "New York could be destroyed!" and Mike replied "You say that as if it were a bad thing."

That's super interesting. I'll have to check that out. I must say that's the one thing I really didn't like about this movie. Billy going out the way he did just didn't make any sense to me at all. He was portrayed as such an adept tracker up until that point, so for him to just go out and expose himself to be picked off so easily was a big disappointment. I'm definitely curious of an extended take on that. 👍👍
@waterbeauty85

@@cbretschneider If I remember correctly, the novelization of the movie implied that Billy's Native American ancestors had probably been hunted by Predators and that he felt that he was fighting for them, but after that, it just said something like Poncho heard his best friend's dying scream.
@SpearM3064
@SpearM3064 2 жыл бұрын
@@cbretschneider Billy's fight with the Predator could also be one of those things that they actually filmed, but cut out because it spoiled the suspense or whatever. I wish they had at least told us his motivation; more of a hint that he was taking a stand to give his friends time to run or whatever would've been nice. As it is, the scene _almost_ feels like his mind's snapped.

This movie along with Alien, set the stage for all Sci Fi/Action movies that followed it and they set the bar really high up, to the point that they and the storylines have never actually been bettered; you really need to review John Carpenters - The Thing with Kurt Russell, another classic with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at.

I saw this opening weekend , there was no other movie that could compare, you felt like you were in the jungle with them.... when Arnie was running before the waterfall plunge, we were like... Dammm Arnie Runs news @11pm... it made the Predator that much more frightening...how the counterbalance of the trap just about killed it, instead of the trap itself...all those things in the finale, were awesome, it using their speech to taunt and mimic them...the move stands the test of time like no other.

To answer your question, no. Action movies do not typically have a full orchestral score. This one was composed by Alan Silvestri, the same guy who did the Back to the Future soundtracks. I can hear similarities between this and especially Back to the Future 2, with a great use of percussion. I was a percussionist in an orchestra. It is so fun. I would have loved to perform something by Silvestri, but we usually did stuff like Tchaikovsky, Carmen, and Gershwin.

So iconic! There is so much to like about this film: the great character actors, the memorable cheesy one-liners, the loads of violence, the creature design, etc. I could talk about this film all afternoon because it was so appealing to me as a kid going into the sixth grade. Every time a trailer came on t.v. for it I got chills, and the movie totally lived up to all my lofty fan boy expectations. Bravo to all involved with this gem. Now, True Lies? 🤔

Arnie was absolutely on fire throughout the 80s and into the mid-90s. I lived through it, I did bodybuilding back then, Arnold was me and my training partner's hero, we'd go and work out for 3 hours, come home, eat an entire roast chicken and a loaf of bread each and then watch Arnie, Sly and JCVD movies into the night. Have a look at: The Running Man, Total Recall, Commando, True Lies, Red Heat, all rippers!

You’ll love Arnie’s early film catalogue for the most part. Conan and Commando stand out, IMO. The sequel Predator 2 is also worth watching. More action, with less suspense (though it doesn’t have Arnie).

Predator 2 sucks. Weak setting, weak premise, weak lead (the character not the actor). It's a direct to video tier sequel. The only good thing about it is that one very creative and awesome shot for a kill. The premisse to the Predator is perfect while everything about the sequel was a downgrade.

@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Commando is not even remotely on the same league of the Arnie kinos like Predator, Terminator 1, 2, Conan and Total Recall. Conan literally was responsible for bringing fantasy to the big screen and the masses and all the other ones are not just action flicks but sci-fi movies. Commando is a pure action flick, you watch it to laugh at the pun one liners and guys jumping on trampolines with big gasoline explosions in the background. It's a different kind of movie, you have to be in the mood for some strong cheese.

Arnie opted out of the sequel because he wanted it to remain in the jungle. There was one person from this one who made an appearance in the sequel but you'd have to watch real close. During the screening, the actor who was wearing glasses' mom walked out when his character was killed. Kevin! My namesake! Giant of a man with an equally big heart, married the actress who played Olivia on Sesame Street.

Awesome reaction Jen. Predator is one of the best action movies of all time. I saw it twice when it first came out in the theaters. One of my favorites.
