48:45 this broke me into tears. This game is a masterpiece, and my memory is trash. I recommended this game to a few of my friends and family, and they aren't realizing what they are missing out on (and haven't played it not realizing what it has to offer). I hope at least one person reads this because I really wish people to understand what I was thinking about. Because of many things, I have thought of committing suicide like 4 or 5 times. The thinking, rational person that I am, came to the realization that even if we tried our best and damnedest to survive and thrive (by colonizing multiple star systems and galaxies), ultimately the universe itself will die. Either black holes would grow so large that the universe becomes one giant black hole which decays into nothingness because of Hawking Radiation, or the universe expands because of Dark Energy and we slowly lose each and every star from our observable universe, and then dark energy overcomes the weak electromagnetic force holding molecules together, which is also known as the Heat Death of the Universe. Either way no matter how you look at it, humanity is doomed to die. I always thought my life would not be meaningless if I contributed something to further our species technologically so one day, we do touch the Sun (metaphorically), and then thrive eternally. But in our laws of the universe there is no concept of eternity. Our laws of physics do not allow even the universe itself to stay coherent, and it is not because of entropy (which is an entirely different beast). Meaning, there is nothing we can do to be an eternal species. We can cheat eternity by creating a simulation and then potentially thrive for eternity, but that probably means that the simulation won't be nearly as good as the current reality we have right now. I have tried to think through this multiple times, and then I still succumb to nihilism. As Socrates also said that "To not have been born at all might have been the greatest boon" and I really do agree, because any person who sees through all the BS normal humans go through every day, will see that it is only Nihilism, nothingness, that prevails, anything else is irrelevant. But this 48:45 right here absolutely broke me. I agree 100%. Our universe through all its nihilistic inevitability still can't escape the fact that we have created beauty with our own two hands, beauty that others will appreciate. Any work that you truly love made by some other person fulfills that. Just this one thing, just this tiny thing, may mean that if someone else loves the work that I have created, my life has had meaning. My life hasn't been for nothing. This is beauty in its purest form. And thank you for creating this amazing video, I hope more people watch it. Although, in this day and age of people being satisfied by ephemeral gratification, people won't appreciate this game, or the concepts it has to present. It is sad, but such is life.

Wow... This game has hit me so hard in ways I still can't explain, but you certainly came really close to doing so. I played it 3 times in the last 3 years since I first got it and I always thought to myself "this is not just a video game... this is something else... something more". It's beautiful, It's sad, It's peaceful, It's even kinda scary at some points. It's annoying. It's meditative. Fulfilling. Damn, I would even call it "productive". Those challenges really exercise the brain. The music is just 100% perfect in clearing and expanding the mind. So much so that I even play the soundtrack whenever I need to focus on solving something at work lol. I already know the ending. I already know the whole backstory, and yet there's still something so inexplicably beautiful and mysterious about it that I know I'm gonna find new things in it even if I play it a hundred more times... I know I'm not alone at this, and I thank you for expressing it so good. This is by far the best video I've seen about this game.

Regarding the "words are the world" section, I got painfully reminded of Wittgenstein there. He basically said that "the limits of one's words/language are the limits of one's world" as well. Wittgenstein was very much into the idea of language and perception/reality being intrinsically linked.

I can't believe this game was released in 2014. I was fully prepared to see 2019 or more recent in your video description, seeing how heavily the game references chatbots and AI. The whole subject of the game is coming to life now that AI research is accelerating so rapidly.

This video was very interesting, the concept of our creations continuing on long after our bodies crumble and our buildings collapse is beautiful. Almost like how the same proses happens naturally with our offspring. I believe the next step of our evolution is to create beings that could upgrade the human condition, be smarter and more resilient than us without losing our compassion and our complexity.

This is superb. I relate very much with your personal account at the end, and the entirety of the conclusion felt really good to hear. Not to mention the very well done synopsis and presentation of the game and its themes. Just felt like saying thanks for making this video.

Among the many, many things I adore about this game, I love that it also says how beautiful humanity can be. How much love there is stored to humans. We love the world, we love people, we want it to continue, not because we are selfish, but because there is so much that can exist. Our art, our creativity, our passion. This game is a love letter. The Talos Principle is truly a game like no other. A masterpiece.

While SOMA is one of my favorite games of all time, Talos Principle stands out as, what I'd consider, the best game I've ever played. It's just.... everything about it is so... so good. I realize not everyone will connect to it, or really dig in, but for those that do... damn.

Great video. This was a brilliant game. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I finished.

This game is just messed up. The ending, in the best case scenario, leaves the immortal robot/AI completely alone on Earth long after all humans were all eradicated. (Imagine the billions of human skeletons everywhere!!). But my main contention with the ending is that there was no reason to shut down and delete the entire simulation after one single success. The humans should have left that infrastructure in place to allow for more simulations to transcend. All they needed was the first one to enter the robot body, then it would have the choice to maintain and fix the existing glitches and corruption and build more robot bodies. I think that's the ultimate test of humanity. Earth could be either be repopulated with a new cybernetic race, or perhaps even develop a cure and birth new humans. The old humans clearly wanted our species to survive in any form, so they would have left enough genetic material and frozen embryos to allow them one day to be born again. Instead, we got a Forever Alone ending. The shutdown and deletion feels more like an F You and I didn't like it at all.

GREAT Vid. The Talos Principle stands out as potentially one of the scariest existentialist pieces of video game literature. Milton (whom I'm certain is based on THE Milton who wrote Paradise Lost) is clearly a stand-in for Satan to juxtapose against Elohim's God. Elohim is a symbolic stand-in for our our parents, our teachers, or our mentors who want both the best for us. Unfortunately, what they consider to be the best for us is often restricted by pure ego. It can even harm us. Sometimes, listening to the snake - the darkness - that shadow - is completely necessary, because being a slave is ultimately not sustainable.

The Talos Principle is not about purpose, nor is it as ambivalent as you suggest at the end. As the very name suggests, TTP is about confronting necessary materiality and mortality of our life. In world A, we are presented with the principle, and its debilitating effects on our regular notion of immortality (primarily through library entries); in world B, we are presented with its debilitating effects on our regular notion of what it means to be a person, primarily through our interactions with MLA; finally, in world C, we are presented with the solution, primarily through Brennan's recordings on intelligence and necessity of cooperation. This is why worlds A and B are of death and ruin, while C is of faith. Purpose is mentioned mostly as a facet of issues about immortality. The game is very clear on its message, its not very relativistic in the sense that you present it, though this is a very good video otherwise! Enjoyable, very enjoyable

The game feels like it's missing something major. The conflicting themes between nihilism and existentialism is missing a third position to consider. The robot does have a purpose in life, it was literally built for a purpose, to be a preserver of humanity. This is inarguably the purpose of it's existence, outside any independent choice it might make.

Great video, but I'd like to point out your voice's tone confuses me sometimes. The transition between the game narrative and your personal life gets blurred as the context could apply to both (you and the stories of people with QRs around the game). Doesn't need a montage (fade out) to signal the transition; a pause and change of tine would suffice.
