Hi - I wanted to give you my answer to your question about riding the entire trail. Whilst planning our trip I did have this little 'OCD' need to complete every trail. Thankfully watching your Montour ride helped me move past the need to ride the GAP all the way into Pittsburgh. We are planning our route from D.C. to Seattle to cover as many fabulous trails, see as much of the country as possible and enjoy the experience. So for me - it isn't about going from mile 0 to the end of the each trail. More about creating a safe route across the country. Having said this - I do agree - if we were only going to ride a particular trail - I would need to ride the whole thing 😉 Thanks again for all your wonderful videos.

Good perspective. The GAP thing is just odd to me because starting in Homestead or Boston just seem like strange starting points but…well, what do I know. Hey, I’d love to follow your adventure across country. Tried to look for your channel but couldn’t find it. Let me know if you’re sharing your story somewhere.

Hi - @@RideAlongAdventures Thanks for the above. Having watched your video and others - I agree - they are odd starting points, unless of course if you lived right there 😂 As for our trip - nothing posted yet. We fly into DC next April 2024 and have given ourselves 18 weeks to get to Seattle (gulp). Thanks to you I have decided to go with the GoPro and document our trip. During our trip I will be posting to Strava daily (provided we have signal) so friends and family know where we are. Then hopefully will put our trip up on KZfaq (also a nervous gulp - new territory for me). If I do - I will let you know. For now - I must say that I love your videos. Have definitely given me ideas, inspiration and several chuckles. Keep up the excellent work. 🚴‍♀

Thank you. The GAP towns are unique. Small world: I lived up in Santa Rosa for six years. I still miss it. Cycling through the Healdsburg/Alexander Valleys…down the Silverado Trail…ok, now I’m getting homesick.

Omg…too funny. I was JUST talking with someone about this very topic. I was always fearful of touring and then I just jumped into it with an old tent and musty sleeping bag. It dumped rain, I had an inch of water in my tent and I survived and thought…I guess I can do this. 😂 the GAP has so many alternatives for shelter and a lot of food stops. I’ve always said it the perfect first tour.

I love your “I’m not judging” question near Homestead and I have these similar thoughts. When I hiked the Appalachian Trail I was walking with a guy. There are two roads into Unionville, NY about a mile and a half apart. He took the first road into town and I took the second. Just before I got to town this guy was walking down to second road back to the trail. So, he skipped that mile and a half of the trail. Tell me why would you hike a 2,194 mile trail and make the decision to skip even a mile and a half of it? Now I’m more of a purist and I adhere to the ‘Hike Your Own Hike’ model but this philosophy is hard for me to get my head around. LOL!

lol. Yeah…it’s a puzzler. But I also had myself questioned recently when I road across Florida and stopped about 20 miles from the official end of the Florida coast to coast trail. People told me it was just a lot of stop and go street traffic so I didn’t go. I guess people have their reasons.

I have a conference in Pittsburgh this weekend (early October). I was hoping to ride the whole double trail, but I don't know if life will allow me to do that (teen at home with autism - high functioning, but he's taking a class through our local CC and it's "tighter" for planning around it) and my MIL lives with us and she has dementia. And this is the busy season for my partner's work, so me taking off for a week (or longer with the conference) and leaving him with all of that to deal with is asking a lot. We both used to work full-time and juggling that was a nightmare, so I stopped working, so yes, it is a tough decision, but it's also tough to NEVER get a break from all the duties to just go for a LONG ride... But I'm impressed you are doing this when the hurricane rain is about to pass through (and is still passing through). It's been raining non-stop for a week and it has been unseasonably cold as well. ETA: ah... this was released in early October, but the ride was around Labor Day - makes more sense. It's been MISERABLE all week!!! LOL

and several people have recommended to me to skip the beginning of the trail and to start in Boston if time is limited (which it is for me and probably others). It cuts out the less interesting/enjoyable parts for many while still allowing time for other parts of the trail. Some people don't have the stamina or the time to do the whole thing, so they do sections.

Wow, yeah, you’ve got your hands full. Hope you can still get out there. I’ve been doing more weekend getaways, 3-day max. Hard to get totally away right now with business travel picking up. Thanks for the clarification on skipping the downtown Pgh portions. Makes sense. And Boston is a great place to start. I hope some year to time it with the leaves. I’m always a week or two off peak schedule. Anyway, best wishes to you and thanks for watching.

@RideAlongAdventures Ай бұрын
Ok, first of all, “umpteenth” is one of the greatest vocabulary words ever. I’m gonna use it in my next video and only you’ll know why. I’ve tried a lot of different shoes. Old running shoes. Lightweight “flats”, 0 rise types. And biking shoes with and without clips. Sandals. Etc. I finally arrived at those Merrill Moab hiking shoes about a year or so ago. They are heavy duty but still fairly lightweight. I still carry a pair of super lightweight slip-ons in my bags for going to a restaurant or sitting around the campfire and I don’t want my Merrills on. I haven’t quite found the perfect shoe yet. But the Moab’s have held up really well. They can take a beating.

I watched all 2:04:16 of the video and it was AWESOME!! I want to do the GAP and the C&O just trying to figure out the logistics of it. I'm in North Carolina and want to start in Pittsburgh but getting there is the challenge.I can catch the train from DC back to Raleigh hopefully with no issues. I have a question about the camping, are their non campground areas where you could use a hammock? I would like to use a hammock instead of a tent. Thanks for the ride I enjoyed it and if you're not aware of it there is a group of cyclist in Kentucky (Kentucky Cycling YT Channel) that do bike camping all over the Southeast. They recently did the GAP and C&O you should check them out and maybe get a trip in with them.
@RideAlongAdventures

I’ve seen hammocks in the primitive campsites (Round Bottom, Cedar Run) as well as in Ohio Pyle State Park. And I think I saw them string up on the Adirondack huts in Connelsville. Thanks for the suggestion on the KY group. I think I’ve watched some of their videos. Thanks for watching! Let me know how your trip goes.

My hubby and I are seriously considering this but I am finding the hotel prices in Pittsburgh are pretty pricey even midweek. The Amtrak arrives so late at night in Pittsburgh it’s the only option before starting the trail. I don’t think I would enjoy climbing out of Cumberland to Pittsburgh and then Trying to make a train in Pittsburgh on the final day of biking. Do you recommend shuttle? We are camping all the way so I am still a bit nervous that I can handle a multi day trip without the best sleep. If you camped did you hang your food from bears? Sorry for all the questions 😂. As you can see I don’t have a lot of confidence I my ability
@RideAlongAdventures
@RideAlongAdventures 11 ай бұрын
No problem...I'm happy to share my opinion but please realize it is just that. Never had any run-ins with bears. I did have a night battle with some raccoons and they were awful. I ended up sleeping with my all my stuff in my tent so they would leave me alone. i hate raccoons. Obviously I don't know all of your logistics because a lot of stuff is dependent on how you intend to get to the trail (drive? fly?). During my most recent trip, I drove to Cumberland and parked under the bridge (free) then took a shuttle service. It wasn't cheap--probably just as much as a hotel room. Another time, I parked in Cumberland, rode my bike about two miles up the trail to an Enterprise car rental place and did a one-way rental to Pittsburgh. That was also not cheap but definitely cheaper than a shuttle service. One note: CALL Enterprise rather than using their app because their app always says, "we don't have any cars on that day". When I called and explained what I was trying to do, they were very helpful. Regarding hotels, one suggestion is to use hotels.com or booking.com because I find they have better rates than going direct. The climb out of Cumberland isn't terrible, if you go that route. Yes, it's a climb so it's slower initially but then it's "downhill" almost all the way back. All in all, it's such a beautiful trail. The timing of your questions is sort of funny because I was supposed to ride it just last week but had to throw in the towel because of the fires up north. The city was a mess--just blanketed in thick smoke for like three days. Now, I'm trying to replan a trip. best wishes. Be bold!! It's totally worth it.

Hi, I wanted to compare this video using the GoPro 7 to the more recent video using the GoPro 11. Yeah, what a difference. The details are far more distinct. But the biggest improvement was the correct rendering of the highlighting. The GoPro 7 is flat in comparison to your new GoPro 11. Gord

You mentioned the POV before. I shot the Pine Creek footage in linear + horizon lock. I’m actually out riding now and am going to see how different the wide view is. I agree with you, the superview bothers my eyes after awhile. It’s a cool view for panoramas but probably should be used more sparingly. It’s like the “bubble” view with the Insta360.
