Join me for my 10th GAP adventure. That’s right: I can’t get enough of this trail. The Great Allegheny Passage never fails to surprise me and teach me new lessons. Headed east to west, I thoroughly enjoyed the tail end of fall weather and what felt like the beginning of winter.
The Adventure:
0:00:22 Day 1: Cumberland to Rockwood
0:32:06 Day 2: Rockwood to Connellsville
1:15:20 Day 3: Connellsville to Pittsburgh
FAQs:
0:14:27 Can I ride the GAP?
0:17:14 How’s the elevation on the GAP?
0:18:44 What’s YOUR preference for going east to west or west to east?
1:08:19 What kind of bike do I need for the GAP?
1:10:00 Where should I stay on the GAP?
1:12:00 How many days does it take to ride the GAP?
1:31:19 What’s the best way to get to the GAP?
1:37:08 Where can I park on the GAP?
1:38:09 What about the C&O towpath trail?

One of the things i most appreciate about your videos is your grateful attitude, and your emphasis on the optimistic rather than the defeat and suffering. And secondly, your insightful research into the famous people and interesting things. You are able to answer the question I always ask myself, "why would people care about what I think"?

That’s very kind of you to say. Honestly, I find it nearly impossible to be negative on a bike. It’s such a privilege (I mean that in the real meaning of the word, by the way) to ride and see the world like that. Again…I really appreciate your feedback and kindness. 🙏

Over the winter months we would love to see you make a video series about trail towns. Just 8 to 20 min videos about individual Trail towns. You might explore the history, places to eat, places to camp and spend the night, things to see and do, live entertainment, famous people, bike shops, museums, events, farmers markets, parks, hiking trails, theater, live music, etc. People that can only do 20 or 35 mi a day, like us... will spend much more time in each of these towns. We have done the GAP and C&O twice, using books and online resources, but hearing it from you would be special for all of us who watch your channel!

Excellent video and beautiful scenery! Thank you for the reminder to be thankful for someone special, I used the opportunity. I am also an emotional person and I was told years ago (I’ll keep by who to myself) that being emotional was ‘unbecoming in a man!’ I will quote here from two of my favorite authors, first Charles Dickens over 170 years ago: “Heaven knows we should never be ashamed by our tears for they are the rain upon the binding dust of earth, overlying are hard hearts.” And more recently from John Irving: “ But we are ashamed of our tears. We live at a time, when critical taste tells us that to be soft hearted is a kin to doltishness; we are so influenced by the junk on television, that even in reacting to it, we overreact, we conclude that any attempt to move an audience to laughter or to tears is shameless.” Keep riding and keep sharing!

Bryan, I am a firm believer in verbalizing the appreciation, love, and affection I feel for others. You just never know what impact you might make. I’m a hugger, so if I have the opportunity, I’m hugging them, too! I regularly send flowers now, while my loved ones are alive, rather than put flowers on their graves. Never take loved ones for granted. Express those emotions!

GAP is definitely a top 3 Trail.. so many ways to enjoy this Trail.. I took that 5:30am train from Pitt to Harpers Ferry.. that’s early..Love Ohiopyle.. I’ve hiked to the campsite off trail in Ohiopyle.. 🤪never again 😂🤣.. what’s great about the GAP is you can bike east to west or west to east 🚴‍♂️😎 camp or B&B ⛺️.. any season 🍁🌻.. and get a different experience 🙂.. one time I biked it with a old Cannondale with 28mm tires no issues.. Oh I love that park bench.. what a view.. I discovered it my last time on the trail.. great video.. brings back awesome memories 😁

Thank you for the great video. The Pinkerton Tunnel was closed for many years. Have ridden the by pass around the “Pinkerton horn” a number of times. It was a pleasant surprise when they opened the tunnel and you no longer had to do that rough ride. An FYI: You would have been fascinated to see them daylight the CSX (?) tunnel on the other side of the river some years ago. They dumped the removed material on top of the Pinkerton horn.

Inspiration for the title line had come while Taffy Nivert and Bill Danoff, who were married, were driving along Clopper Road in Montgomery County, Maryland to a gathering of Nivert's family in Gaithersburg, with Nivert behind the wheel while Danoff played his guitar. "I just started thinking, country roads, I started thinking of me growing up in western New England and going on all these small roads," Danoff said. "It didn't have anything to do with Maryland or anyplace. I'M a Wva Mountaineers but live in Montgomery County Md. Ill be doing the trail fall 2024. Thanks for your video

Great video, as always! FAQ with an adult beverage is perfectly acceptable. If you ever wanted to decrease mileage a bit and do the trail in 4 days with B&B's the whole way, I recommend West Newton, Ohiopyle, Meyersdale for the stays regardless of direction. Bright Morning, Falls Market Inn/Suites, and Yoders. We take our time on the bike, and have plenty of time to relax in the towns. Like you said, there are just so many options for lodging. Thanks again for documenting the ride!

I just attempted my first ride of the GAP and C&O at the end of last month, started in Pittsburgh. Made it 3 days, 213 miles, to Hancock, MD but had to call it quits due to a broken weld on my bike. I've been aching to get back out there and complete it. I'd like to add that while riding on the trail, I met a guy named Gary who had an unfortunate event occur at the free Connellsville campground - he had all his camping gear stolen. I personally stayed at the KOA.

I always love your commentaries, Bryan. Everytime I watch one of your C&O adventures, I see something new. It's a different trip each time... never gets old. Also, I really enjoy seeing a version were you show extended riding on some of the nicer parts. Sorry you had some cold wet weather this time around. Those parts are more of a challenge than a fun and enjoyable ride. Honestly, if I were to do this, I would drive to one end or the other, park my vehicle, and go both ways... returning back to my vehicle. I assume there are parking facilities for those who chose to do that... The trip back, going the opposite direction, is a whole new experience. It's a two-fer for the price of one... well, sort of.😊 Thanks again for sharing your adventures and thoughts. Gord

Thanks, Gordon. Going both ways is a great way to do it. Had I done so, the weather would have drastically improved. It's just so true about this trail and perhaps most trails: there's always something that catches your eye on one trip that was missed on the previous one. A few trips ago, I met a guy who rode the Gap AND C&O back and forth for 12 days and managed to visit different towns both ways. I think that would be a lot of fun. Maybe for Trip 11. :)

@RideAlongAdventures
@RideAlongAdventures 6 ай бұрын
Glad to hear it. I'm also a youtube junkie when it comes to my indoor trainer. So, that jacket. Believe it or not, I bought it WAY back in 2000. It's a waterproof, running shell that I bought through Road Runner Sports (their brand, which I don't think it even a thing anymore). I bought it as part of a full running "suit" with pants. I can only use the full thing on super cold days or I just sweat like a sauna. There are much better options today that are more lightweight, breathable, flexible, etc. I have a really lightweight Sugoi jacket that is water resistant but less warm. www.roadrunnersports.com/product/45562/mens-sugoi-stash-jacket?cc=001 I wore it on my recent Florida Coast to Coast ride. It packs down really small. My main learning on these jackets is that nothing is truly waterproof unless it is basically not breathable which presents a whole different batch of issues.
@RideAlongAdventures
@RideAlongAdventures 6 ай бұрын
Sorry...I failed to mention this one. I'm still testing it out but it is also water resistant. This isn't a small, packable jacket by any means but the combo of the heating and rain shield is worth considering. I'd call this a riding coat, not a jacket. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMqdrauFmMjXqWQ.html

@RideAlongAdventures you bet Bryan, I'll always be a fan, your content is great. When I saw that it was your 10th time, I immediately thought of that clip. I just can't believe you only got that little bit.. was that PBS? I hope we have a mild winter, last year's blizzard was a downer.

Another interesting & entertaining video Bryan! Trust me, NO ONE pronounces ‘Duquesne’ correctly if they are not from that area however I must admit your phonetics were hilarious! And I now understand your ‘peach ice cream’ comment from your RAGBRAI video. Looking forward to your FL C2C video! Have a safe trip & a great ride!

True story: I had been traveling to Pittsburgh for years (my wife is from there) and had HEARD the word said repeatedly so I had this mental image of something like: "Ducane". Then one day it struck me that the road signs I was seeing with the real spelling were connected and, well, I'm still laughing. Thanks for watching and, yes, Florida awaits! One more ride before winter sets in.

Bryan, I just finished watching to the end a little while ago and wanted to comment further. What I would like to see is a review of bike trails that can be ridden reasonably comfortably in the winter. This would likely include the states of Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California. I really liked the sound of leaves under the tires. It sounds like little feet running right behind you. If you think about that too much it will freak you out... you'll keep looking behind you.😮 Gord

Good topic. I’ll look into that. The leaves, after awhile, were like white noise. When I stopped it got amazingly quiet, the kind of quiet where you can hear your heart pumping!

@@gorrdd yeah, it was strange. Leaves can be pretty loud. It just hit me when I stopped at one point how totally quiet it suddenly became.

@@RideAlongAdventures Yes, I just remember riding over leaves as a kid. It was fun. But for hours and hours... that's another matter. The one thing that does not communicate well in these videos is the duration of time. Only your description of complete silence, once you stopped, gives the impression of hours and hours of riding. Even then, it's only as a reflection. Inexperienced people see your video and they think this is just a piece of cake. It can be depending upon the conditions... both weather and physical conditioning. The video can become a real distraction to the real thing. I think you need to continue communicating what you are actually experiencing so they get the picture that this isn't always a piece of cake. It's like newbies on the RAGBRAI in the dead heat of summer. Gord

@@gorrdd thanks, Gordon. Good feedback. Yeah, sometimes it's hard to give the whole picture. I don't know if you can tell but Day 3, I was wiped out. it's hard to communicate that.

This was epic. Thank you! My husband and I have GAP/C&O on the top of our retirement bucket list. We're set to do this some time in 2024. Your video is going right into my notebook of good reference material. As for winter topics. I'd love to know more about your creative process in general, like what are you using to edit with and how long does it take to go from raw material to a polished video. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Perfect-thanks. I actually already started writing some ideas for that. Regarding retirement: good for you! It’s an adjustment but I’m slowly starting to relax and embrace the change. That’s probably a video by itself. 😊 Thanks for watching!

Thank you, David. Perhaps we could make that work sometime! I'm beginning to think about some sort of meet up on the GAP. It would be fun to do it as a group. When I rode the Erie Canal trail in September, I saw a group of about 30 people and you could just tell they were having the time of their lives together. I like my alone time but I would love to experience a smaller group as well. let's stay in touch!

I loved the train at the beginning, that was f'n cool!! So, did you actually see the Phantom on this trip or were you again, looking the other way? (The idea that you have ridden several times past this coaster and NOT noticed it, blows my mind)!! I love the FAQ's and I vote that on every ride, you do this. So, here is my question: Why doesn't the wifey come along with you more often? So, I am planning on retiring next December. So I will be planning on the GAP and the C&O maybe in May or June, or I may wait until the fall. Here is an idea I have been thinking about: A subscriber ride - one choice is the bike train at the Lehigh Gorge in Jim Thorpe, PA. That was a blast!! You ride the train with your bike and they take you the 25 miles up the gorge, and then you ride down back to your car. I think it's only on the weekends in the summer and fall. Of course the GAP and C&O would be awesome. Thanks again for all your rides, keep pedaling, my friend...

I know!! Riding along side of the train was just wild. Yes, I stopped briefly to look at the rollercoaster. :) The wifey is up for 10-15 mile rides so these longer journeys are just not in the picture at this point. Maybe some day. Yeah, I've been thinking of a Ride Along Adventure meet up next year. It could be a lot of fun and, yeah, that's a great suggestion of Jim Thorpe. I gotta get back up there some time. I only rode is once a long time ago (when the bridge was out) and I remember it as really beautiful. Retiring in a few weeks or a year and a few weeks? Either way, it's a blast. It's an adjustment for sure but also a great change.

Lol...those were pretty high on the Buckeye scale. I bought two and saved one for the evening but it melted with a chocolate covered graham cracker and created a new mutant dessert. Seriously looking forward to the C2C. Hope your plans are working out as well. I was just looking into alternate routes for the "gap" section. I've heard people say the rural path is VERY rural.
