The Life Cycle Of Garlic Explained! Garlic is a unique crop in the Allium family (Onions, Shallots, Scallions, Leeks, etc) that over winters in the ground and sprouts the following spring, finally harvested that summer, 9 to 10 months after first planting.
Its a LONG crop that often confuses the new grower. Well, let's eliminate that confusion and completely cover the life cycle of Garlic from cloves we plant to the bulbs we harvest!

Thank you so much for this garlic quickie explanation. I've tried growing garlic for years but was putting it in the garden in spring to no success but chives. I planted my garlic last week this October 2021 so I look forward to harvesting bulbs in July 2022! I'm a very happy gardener! 🌱 🧄

Buy a grow tent. Yeah, a grow tent. For weed. Garlic and many crops in general love them. I’ve got my garlic going strong. It’s only about two months old and it’s nearly a foot tall.

Thanks for posting this, as being in zone 5a, we have brutal winters and I was concerned about the fall green sprouts emerging and then freezing. It's my first year growing garlic!

Hey, thanks for watching! Yeah, its not the freezing that kills the plant, its that they are a wick for moisture to rot out the bulb. The Garlic will always send up more leaves in the spring. So its not ideal for them to "pre-sprout"...it not a death sentence either. :-) Cheers!

I planted garlic this early spring, we had a very hot summer and did not grow. Now that it cooled off to fall it has started to grow so I am going to leave it over winter. Hopefully it will continue to grow next year.

After seeing you other garlic video, I subscribed and planted garlic. I'm in Tasmania, Australia and don't know the variety. It's spring here and tgey have been in for about 6 weeks. About 4 inches high. No true winter here. Can get a frost. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration.

Right on, the fact that it sprung up is a good sign. Some softnecks don't need that chill or at least not a severe one. Keep us updated on the progress, should be interesting to see the final results!

It's cool you showed us some roots. I'm excited for next year's garlic. I'm planting 5 or 6 varieties maybe more 🤔 24 cloves in so far. Waiting for my peppers to finish up for the rest. Let's see how planting peppers then garlic then back to peppers works out. I'll have to figure out how to properly amend the raised bed in-between. My parents thought it was good but didn't produce properly. I'll be adding compost mainly. Should I add cow manure? If so when? I'm thinking for the peppers and not sure about before planting the garlic 🤔. So far I only used a granular.

Right on, sounds like you're on top of it over there, great to hear! I avoid animal manures for Garlic. I don't amend or feed them all fall/winter as they are barely growing. Then in the spring, I'll liquid feed or amend with some compost. Balanced is the key....don't go high in nitrogen. :-)

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I am curious why you avoid animal manures for garlic? Is it just about the nitrogen? I mentioned before that we amended with rabbit manure, but it is not like other animal manure in that by itself, (no rabbit urine) it is not too hot and does not need to be composted before using it in the garden.

I can’t thank you enough for all your fab videos on growing garlic new live in south and planted garlic 3 weeks ago. They are already up to 8” green leaves. Do I cut them down to send more energy to bulb? It’s a long way to spring. Thanks for your input. Gayle

Hi Jeff! I'm in 4b, last frost date May 22, I missed the fall party to plant garlic, so I planted some in containers at the very end of march, and put them outside since we are still obviously getting below freezing temps at night. We have had about a week/10 days of warmer days reaching between 10-15degrees C, I noticed my perennial flowers starting to come up, but not the garlic...do you think I still have a chance, or should I stop wasting my energy? thank you so much! obsessed with your videos! Also so thankful your in Canada! such a rarity to find good information for us!

Hi, love your videos they are very informative. I live in zone 5b and had no idea that I missed my time to plant garlic. This is the first year I will be planting new veggies aside from the usual tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. I just put 27 cloves of garlic in the freezer today and I’m going to keep them there for about 6-8 weeks. I think that’s what your video said about garlic anytime. They are going in containers on my deck. My last frost is about may 15th, will I be able to plant them in the containers and place outside after they come out of the freezer at the end of April or early may? Or should I just take them out and use them for cooking and wait until the fall to try? Thanks for all your help and keep up the good work!

Hi G G, the quicker you can get them planted the better. Yes, you are simulating freezing, but Garlic also usually grows for a month or so before setting in for winter. Trick it for a few weeks, but that's it...get it sprouted and ready for outside planting on your last frost date....especially the hardneck kinds! Best of luck! :-)

Is it necessary to mulch garlic in the Fraser valley where we do not get extreme cold?

I'm in Victoria, mulching does a LOT more than just mitigate low temps. Weed suppression, eliminates erosion, dissipates our crazy heavy winter rains, and generally keeps the top layer of soil bio-active and healthy, which is where all the action happens (nutrient fixation, etc).

Hey John, it CAN be done....but grass clippings or shredded leaves work better. Paper tends to clump and suffocate the cloves. Cardboard would work better if you don't have access to grasses, straws, or leaves. :-)

I normally don't have to Connie, as 9 times out of 10, I'm planting in the rain (lol) and the time of year my Garlic goes in is the fall.....right before the wettest 6 months of the year.

Question off topic. If you had a volunteer tomato plant that was at least 4' tall. It has no tomatoes and very few flowers would you pull it out? Do you think it would it ever produce tomatoes? Thanks

Hey Shirley, depends on where you live. For me, winter is coming, that tomato plant would have been cut down a month ago. For someone in the tropics where tomatoes are perennials? They could easily keep it growing and producing next spring.

Can you grow garlic indoors? I am trying for shits and giggles and they have tall green sprouts ... It's been a month or so. Should I just leave them alone ? Lol

Yes, softneck can easily be grown with enough light and just moderate temperatures..... Hardneck is trickier because it needs a chilling cycle.

Just curious. Can you plant a bulb without the skin on it?

You can, and they often grow just fine....but sometimes they rot....so I wouldn't remove the papery coating on purpose....But when you're doing hundreds of them, sometimes the paper just falls off and I go ahead and plant them anyways, :-)

Cabbage is tough because it can never get to flower if you keep harvesting it. Bok Choy is just like lettuce...leave a couple of plants to flower and you're good to go!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks, but no... The bok choy seeds in their little tiny pods are almost microscopically small. How do I get them separated out of the pods (the pods are only about one mm wide themselves) and the small particles in the bottom of the bowl? You can't winnow with blowing on it because the seeds themselves will blow away. I'm really struggling to get them out of the pods, out of the bowl they're sitting in, and into an envelope for the winter.

@@goatkidmom My seed saving book rates cabbage and bok choi in the advanced category of seed saving - meaning they're not as easy as say tomatoes are, to save seeds from. They suggest using a kitchen sieve to separate tiny seeds from pod remnants and stems. They also mention winnowing with a fan. Blowing is too gusty as you've discovered but a fan on low combined with enough distance from the source might provide acceptable results. Good luck!

@@kevinrowbotham545 Thanks, I have sieves of almost every size imaginable, not sure why I didn't think of that. I know that you have to cut an x into the cabbage to allow the stem to come up, but I haven't figured out the correct season to do this, or whether or not I need to overwinter the cabbage first. Which seed saving book are you using? (I've been gardening for 53 years, and seed saving for about 22, but you learn something new every year. 🙂)

@@goatkidmom I am in Canada so I am using Seeds of Diversity Canada's seed saving book. Head cabbage is a biennial so yes you would have to overwinter the head. I have only been saving seeds for the last few years so the book has been very helpful. They seem to assume the flower stalk will just grow from the overwintered head. I would guess that the head will have split on its own but I don't know enough to be sure.

No one grows garlic from seeds. Sexual reproduction in garlic production almost never happens. Garlic is biennial because it undergoes a winter vernalization period.... ie, it grows over two growing seasons

I have only watched a couple of your videos and you are factually pretty clueless about garlic. Never heard you mention what sub-group garlic your cultivating or the length of the dormancy period. The ignorance is actually my financial gain, keep up the good work.
