I always played with the fibres of Lotus stalks and Lotus roots… never knew the fibres could be used as textile. I would pay more attention when I could get my hands on the stalks… not just for food 😊

I recently watch how plant can be made to be cloth, and i quite shock how many fibers in plant even tree bark can be made for thread and yarn, and it could be use for clothing/ textile You should check on it, sone even made from banana tree, flax, etc All of this is just using the fiber in plant

Wish they would explain what they are doing. Really old way to do it. And can see why it would be so expensive. And I hope the money goes back to these workers for the hard work they do every day to bring this beautiful silk to the rest of the world. Totally amazing talent

how can we buy direct from the craftsmen so the money goes directly in their deserving hands??
Who's transporting it to you? Translating your order? How are you going to find them? Import taxes? Etc...

To create a 1.7m long scarf, it takes 4800 lotus stalks. Therefore, the process to weave a fabric from lotus silk is very hard and time-consuming. In Vietnam, a scarf costs an average of 4 million to 5 million VND (~157 - 200 USD)

Wow this is incredible to watch how its made. But honestly they can't have health and safety there. No doubt been handed down from generation to generation.

I would have liked a more in-depth. For them to actually explain the process. This also looks like it's done by a few different production companies, and I would have liked more of an explanation of the differences of the different weights of thread, because some of that thread is pretty thick, and some of it is quite fine. It would have also been great to see the fine stuff be made, rather than the heavier weight thread which we saw being pulled from the lotus. Then showing the coconut husks being made into a woven rope carpet near the end has me second guessing that anything after the first few minutes is even lotus leaf at all

It’s the Americans that mainstream America mocks and tries to outsource to poor countries only for the labor costs in those countries to rise in 3 years to the point where it doesn’t make sense to off shore anymore….

The use of this word depends on the language of the country. Cannot impose your standards on naming something foreign. "Tơ" Silk, "tơ nhện" spider silk or "tơ sen" lotus silk in Vietnam all use the word "tơ" to describe their fragility. But when translated into another language, there are no words used to describe it. 😅 Native people call 실크 made from silkworms "lụa", but when translated, there is no English word for it so it is called silk same "tơ"
