Glad to see I am not the only one who appreciated the lore depth of this character. Everything about him fits what I know of traditional fairies.

I absolutely love this character, and the way Marc Warren played him was wonderful. I was so fascinated when I first read the book and saw how well he tied in with so many different aspects of fairy folklore. He deserves so much more recognition.

I read the book twice and saw the movie series several times and no matter how much I read, watch and review this marvelous and mesmerizing story, I am always thrilled at the story. You cannot miss a word of the book because you have the sensation that everything, absolutely every word is crucial to the story.

I so agree. I've read the book twice. And I wish I could forget it all, so I had a good excuse to read it again. It is hard to put my finger on why it is just so utterly wonderful.

I thought The Gentleman was brilliant! Also, I found the whole series very amusing, in a very dark way.

Absolutely agree. I love this book and have tried to get others to read it . Long before they made the series. I did think they might find it difficult actually portray the book. But they did it well. And yes , having seen varieties of, all my life. He is as close as you'll get to fae. I believe.

I think they did it very well! In many respects it reminds me of Neil Gaiman's Sandman in its depth, not just of story but also of lore. JSAMN is, I believe, one of those masterpieces which will always be very difficult to adapt, but they did a fantastic job. And I agree, he is the closest you can show to what fae are really like.

the first that comes to mind from contemporary story is Prince Nuada Silverlance. I thought he was the actual hero of the story in the Golden Army as he wanted to restore Nature and Gaia back and get rid of all the polluting humans.

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I haven't heard the audio book yet but it's on my list! I think the miniseries did a great job considering they only had a handful of episodes to capture a masterpiece. It's one of those books which is impossible to get 100% right.

E. C. Hibbs I thought it was! :) It's a collection of short stories, one of which features Strange, and another is from "A Child's History of the Raven King", the book Norrell took such exception to; all except "The Duke of Wellington Misplaces His Horse" (though it easily could be) are set in the world/alternate history of Strange and Norrell. My absolute favorite is "Mr. Simonelli or The Fairy Widower", with "Mrs. Mabb" running a close second.

Nicely explained! Have you read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? Contemporary urban fantasy series with top-notch faeries. Currently up to book 15 which is daunting, but book 4 is where the faery stuff really gets going. Fae politics becomes very important later on. The wizard magic is well done too; if you retcon out the 'everyone knows about magic' stuff, it could be the future of the Strange & Norrell world.

Do you have any suggestions for folklore books that have faeries that are similar to the Gentleman?
@Ereldor
@Ereldor 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for such an entertaining and informative video. I'd also understood that it was a belief among royal families in Medieval times that baby Princes and Princesses were in danger of being snatched away by faeries as they were being delivered, which unfortunately led to Queens giving birth while being watched by a dozen people to be sure the child wasn't taken! Is that true?
