The German automotive industry has long played a key role in the country's prosperity. It employs hundreds of thousands and enjoys cozy relationships with politicians. But the COVID-19 crisis threw a wrench in the works. What’s next?
The prosperous German auto industry has long been lagging when it comes to innovating new automotive technologies. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the industry is turning to decision-makers for help.
But just how far will policymakers go to help the car companies? Arguing that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit them hard, the auto industry is demanding the postponement of stricter CO2 limits and a purchase premium for new vehicles. They maintain that nothing less than the prosperity of the whole country is at stake. But is Germany's success really dependent on the auto industry? And how much blame does industrial policy bear for the failures of the automotive companies?

In the United States, German cars have a reputation for being fun to drive, and luxurious, but unreliable and overpriced. Toyota/Lexus for reliability and financial prudence; Tesla for innovation. Audi / BMW for fun and beauty if you have money to burn on expensive maintenance and repairs.
@lonelywanderer3558
@lonelywanderer3558 3 жыл бұрын
Also, expensive to maintain. Lexus is a lot better because it has the same reliability as Toyota. I have owned Audi and VW, and they were both ok, not great, and the gas mileage was a total scam. Toyota and Honda are the best, Nissan for RWD. “Fun to drive”? No, German cars are too heavy to feel fun. A fun car is like the 350z, MX5, or BRZ - light RWD with the best Japanese suspension technology.

Yes but not a word about corrupt medias, while no mention of Tesla. Advertising is a kind of corruption, Total has recently canceled a huge advertising campaign in a French newspaper after an article not so kind on Total. Not to mention the interview of IG metall may have come at a price, and this Union is more interested by its survival than workers interest.

I, for one, have abandoned German car manufactures. I say that as a German who loved the the Audi A4 cars. But starting in the late 90s, I stopped fawning over German cars because they were not innovative. Toyota introduced hybrid cars while the German car industry poopood them. Then, Diesel Gate emerged showing that all German car manufacturers prefer cheating over real innovation. This was the nail in the coffin for my appetite for German cars for quite a while. My next car will be a Tesla - not BMW, AUDI, Mercedes, or especially VW.

Yeah. Now Toyota are investing in hydrogen power, which is the right thing to be doing. Don't buy a Tesla, buy a Toyota Mirai. Electric cars aren't as environmentally friendly as the media make them out to be. The batteries end up in landfill when their lifecycle runs out and the rare Earth metals used to produce them are minded using slave labour in Africa. Electric cars are just a trend. Once the masses realise the things I mentioned, the people who bought electric cars will be desperately trying to sell them.

DW videos are often trash. Majority of their car videos are almost heavy in nationalism. Notice how they said following ww2 cars are mass produced which is factually a lie. Germans didn’t invent the car or iCE per say. Germans invented in the 1800s a toy for rich people that could occasionally travel a few kilometers when not breaking down. You can look at turn of the century newspaper coverage of the automobile to see what Germans invented. Several other inventors in other nations helped usher in the era of mass produced automobiles that were used as a means of transportation, not Germany. Germany created the origins of the car, not the car itself.

That is a load of bullshit 😂 If you want a decent EV car with decent range they are still VERY expensive cars. The ones that are cheap are just trash cinese or very very low range crappy cars. The Tesla S is 80-90 k $ in US and 90-100k € in EU The equivalent from Mercedes is about 20k more. The Tesla 3 is around 40k € Lowest you can go is a VW ID3 at about 30-35k € but it's quite full of bugs (i've tried it) and also it's a cheap plastics galore. These are high prices even for a white collar european, let alone rest of the world.

Not just cars, Japan as whole is collapsing economy with most debts and non innovative with plastic quality in their cars. S. Korea is also third after USA, Europe, while Japan being the first in biggest debt*** Chinese cars lack quality among your selection of nation when it comes to automobiles. Lacks the ingenuity. German cars may be overpriced in repairs with fun too, atleast its priced that very high bec of its best tech and quality and Durable in crashes. That is why is expensive like Apple , right yellow triggered? I am conveniently using Apple and an Apple user, its made and assembled in USA, it’s so durable lasted for more than 7 years now on my third to fourth Apple. I still use them all. Samsung phones lack that maybe improved but they overheat plenty of times. Sony, not close. Chinese, the worse. Every time, throughout history, when there is an industrial revolution, the most dominant industries are always the hardest hit. This is not due to the fault of the company, but rather to the democratic financial structure of any business entity. The main purpose of any business entity is to bring profit to its shareholders year after year with the lowest possible cost. Social and environmental impacts are treated like 2nd class citizens. The sooner Germany realizes that the internal combustion engine is a thing of the past, the better for Germany. If the Germany sees this new challenge as an opportunity rather than a drawback, then it might have a chance.

Over the last 100 years, these auto makers got really good at stamping pretty things out of metal, making 1% improvements each year and enjoying government protection. Why would a talented electrical, chemical or software engineer want to work at a company that clearly has zero respect for these professions? Meanwhile, Tesla is now worth far more than all the German car makers combined.

Career politicians are career politicians the world over. In Australia, we have no automobile industry , so our politicians are hand in glove with the fossil fuels industry, granting them huge subsidies, opposing solar and wind generation, counting on lucrative post-politics sinecures on company boards - being paid millions not for any skills, for they have none, but for their contacts and access to those in power. Sortition now!
