My grandpa was captured during the "battle of the bulge." He was a sniper so that means certain death. The German who captured my grandpa threw his sniper rifle into a ditch so no one would know that this American P.O.W. was infact a sniper. My grandpa never knew this German's name, but was sure he had saved his life by hiding his rifle.

Ah yes, I know this story.. I visit the Hürtgen forest often, and it's a very mysterious place.. The mix of horror and sadness that you feel when walking through the tall pine trees.. The story about Lengfeld always fascinated me. The first time I learned about it was when I was a kid, visiting the cemetery.. There are so much more beautiful stories like this.. No matter what uniform we are wearing, we are all human.. War is sad. Rest In Peace all innocent and young soldiers who died in war, no matter what side!

This reminds of a story my mom told me about a relative who was a kid in the Second World War. He and his family were hiding from the firefight taking place in his village. Eventually, the family moved across the village to another house away from the fight. At that house, the kids were allowed to play inside the courtyard of the house with a ball. At one point, the boy kicked the ball too hard and it landed outside the courtyard walls. He ran out to grab it and picked it up, then heard a shout in German. Looking up, he saw a German soldier standing quite a ways away from him. The soldier told him to follow his directions exactly. The boy was scared and confused, but obeyed the soldier's orders. The soldier directed him where to step to get back to the courtyard gate. The kid had been standing in the middle of a minefield.

We fight for a victory we cannot win without a sacrifice, without a war, without a loss, without a spark of hope. A hope that someday we'll enter as soldiers and return as normal people, to our families waiting for us at home ... but most importantly, to the people we faught with. Scary thing is, that soldier you were shooting at during the war was also trying to fight for freedom, but not for his ... but for his county. The main reason most soldiers shot at the enemy is not because they want to kill them or hate them, but because they want to stop them from killing them or their comrades. He was an exemplary company leader and he claimed never more from us as he was willing to give by himself. Led by him I was on patrol straight into the american forward outposts. When the american observation ammunition detonated on trees with a flogging bang and we got the impression that the enemy broke into our positions he never said "Go and check" but "Follow me". An old friend of the family was a soldier in the Wehrmacht stationed in france 1944. He was a gunner on an MG42 and was hit in the neck/shoulder and heavily wounded, while his assistant gunner was rendering first aid the position was taken by US soldiers and the "battle" was pretty much over, but instead of just shooting him and his friend, their medic helped stabilize his condition and the americans told them to just leave with another german soldier that managed to surrender. He always told me when I was young how grateful he is and how much he regrets picking up a rifle in the first place. (After being released his friends who where not wounded where able to get him to a field hospital and after being released from medical care, he deserted and hid until the end of the war with one of the guys, he straight up refused after that to ever touch a gun again.)
