After so many years of German supremacy, as 1942 drew to a close, the Allies were really beginning to make headway. The British made a crucial breakthrough in North Africa, and the Americans pushed the Japanese out of Burma and New Guinea, while in Russia the Germans found themselves surrounded, as the winter snow set in over Stalingrad.

My Father was 29 y/o when Japan attacked us. He was a Sicilian immigrant, with no birth certificate,, so he could only volunteer for the USMC, who would take anyone. Thus it was, that Dad was in the very 1st platoon to walk on to Guadalcanal, on 8/7/1942. he was there x 6 weeks, caught Dengue Fever, & had " combat fatigue ", from lack of sleep. it took 20 months in New Zealand , & another 6 in Oakland CA., Naval Hospital, before Dad returned home to Denver. he was awarded The Navy Cross & the Purple Heart, & given a small lifetime pension. My Dad was the best man I ever knew , & I miss him terribly. -------------MJL, 77 y/o

Look up Liam Dale’s channel. This is part of his 24h epic series. He has versions that are 8 hours long and they are the best to go to sleep to. Must have listened to the series 20 times. That and Battlefields and The World at War. It is difficulty to top those three in regards to quality and they all have different approaches to their narrative.

I think this particular one is hour 5 or 6. Leaning towards 5. He has other great documentaries too. I emailed him one time (he had issues with MGM or another company like that and his videos were temporarily down) and he responded right away. Edit: I’m so wrong. This is North Africa so it’s about half way through. Maybe episode 12.

I'm of the same opinion. I wonder, what was that high purpose, that _a clearly very intelligent and moral person_ who made a decision that in war documentaries death and suffering must be blurred out, could have had in mind? Maybe it was "to give an impression that war is a funny game where guys run around with fireworks screaming hooray"?

It's very simple to understand. THESE days Google has to have a blanket approach to satisy the advertising criteria of EVERY country in the world. That's it. As a btb.. the channel here chose to blurr the dead people. MY version, I simply deleted those shots and I don't have one single complaint about their absence. I personally believe if you need to see corpses and people burning alive to understand the horror of history; that's not about your opinion of censorship. Its an interest in gratuitous imagery. Get a tube of KY and head over to the websites that can sort you out in that department. :-)

Wow- 1080HD! Without it, this film would be hard to watch. Another great job, Liam- thanks. And if Liam doesn't pronounce things like YOU do, don't worry- he's British, and they were a LOT closer to the War than most Americans were. My father was at Tarawa- accent on TAR. Others say TarAWA. It offends my Ears, but it's a small price to see such fine films. :) So, send SHtalin to Shtalingrad to see Zhukov-lol. BTW, Eastern Europeans like Poles and Germans say 'V' instead of 'W', so Werner and Warsaw are Verner & Varsaw.

It is not accurate that German air power was only committed to the Osrkrieg. The Luftwaffe staged a huge operation against Malta as well as supporting Rommel. In addition, by 1942, the Germans diverted substantial resources to opposing the British bombers expanding the strategic bombing campaign, both air craft and artillery as well as munitions.

Market Garden failed because of General Brereton's poor planning of the airborne drops, General Gavin ignoring orders to seize the bridges on day 1, and really bad luck that two SS panzer divisions were resting in Arnhem. Oh, really? How about Italy, Hungary, Romania, Finnland? And don't forget, the then Germany also included Austria and part of Chechoslovakia. Not all of it was literally occupied, part of it was included in German Reich. By the way, the first German POW in the famous Kursk battle was actually not a German but a Slovak - corporal Bruno Fermela. And the famous Operation Uranus which doomed the German 6th Army in Stalingrad began by breaking through Romanian, then Italian and Hungarian lines. In Russia there were even Spanish (Blue Division) and French (the so-called Anti-Bolshevik Legion) on the German side. The latter though bas badly mauled in the Moscow Battle and after that was used only in anti-partisan role, the brave French were at least good fighting civil population.

As for Finnland, don't view it as a small peace-loving nation as it seems now. They were capable of forming an over half a million army to help Germans surrounding Leningrad. And the Finns fulfilled their objectives coming to the river Svir. It were the Germans who failed joining them on this river thus finally fully surrounding Leningrad. Germans were beaten in the Tikhvin battle and couldn't unite with Finns. By the way, now it's widely accepted that Stalin's reasons for the war with Finnland were laughable: he justified it by fears that Finns would help Germans in the future war. The defense of Leningrad. Today they say it was all rubbish. But exactly that happened: Finns help Hitler in his war, they went far beyond pre-war border and would be totally happy capturing Leningrad.

I agree with you partly. The US was already in the war against Germany, the U.S. government had ordered the US navy to hunt and destroy German U-boats before Germany declared war on the U.S. . And plus US navy was escorting British ships before Germany declared war. The victors say Germany declared war on neutral America but that is like the “Iraq has weapons of mass destruction lie” Also the enigma code was broken and so enabling the enemy to read Germany’s most secret messages. Mussolini misadventures in Greece caused German to send massive military assistance to save him from certain defeat and which caused Germany to delay the attack on Russia by 6 weeks. In Crete Germany lost nearly 500 transport planes plus Germany had used up large quantity of fuel.some units were still in Greece when operation Barbarossa started. The Germans had decided that due to the delay caused by helping Mussolini, it was too late in the year to start the attack on Russia but because the next opportunity would be the next year and there was no way to keep it a secret, they decided they had to attack. Yes the Japanese too they contributed to Germany’s by not attack Russia in the East as Germany had requested. And yes later in the war Hitler should have listened to his generals And the Finns refusing to completely closing the blockade around Leningrad and Germans had insisted they did, in fact the Germans that it was already done but they outright refused. German requested permission to send German troops to do it themselves but once again the Finns refused. Hope its not too long.

For the most part, Japan destroyed British forces wherever they met them in WW2. They had the obvious terrain advantage but even still its not a stretch to say Japan put and end to the British Empire in Asia through their victories and shattering the Empire prestige.

Market Garden failed because of General Brereton's poor planning of the airborne drops, General Gavin ignoring orders to seize the bridges on day 1, and really bad luck that two SS panzer divisions were resting in Arnhem. In reality, Monty just presented a modified version of his narrow front strategy to General Eisenhower. Monty didnt really plan the actual operation because he wasnt a Corps or Division commander,

Two things that I think most people who studied this time period might agree on. German intelligence and German logistics were both awful. It doesn't matter if it's in North Africa or in the Soviet Union, the intelligence and logistics of the Germans was always second-rate.

@@teddymcfail4359well, in the beginning, the German opponents were either amazingly disorganized (France) or too small to effectively resist. Additionally, Poland, which might have succeeded against Germany alone couldn’t win the two front was presented by the USSR in the East. If Stalin wasn’t so paranoid and incompetent over his own people, he would have listened when he was told exactly when and where the Germans would invade. But he ignored that completely.
