In this review I'm giving you my impression of the Swiss Halberd by Cold Steel. As far as historical polearm reproductions are concerned it's budget class. Is it worth your money? Let's take a look...

The pole axe is a bit better, but yeah the shafts were fairly inconsistent. I wound up with one that was warped, and called CS and they sent me a replacement. It has made it'self a good home in my home PC repair tool box. Also I used it to remove debris and tree limbs after my house got hit with a tornado. so that helped out a lot dragging out old furniture and whatnot out of the way.

To be fair, it is a *fairly* mass produced polearm and it's 120$ to boot so in all fairness, I expected something worse when hearing the price. I reckon if you were to get a dedicated blacksmith and have it made to battle specifications (I think that's a thing) I reckon you'll have much more fun with it.

That'd be a pretty cool blade to modify into kind of a Swiss army axe. Shorten the haft a bit, put a counterweight on the end and wrap it and you'd have a really nice multi-tool that's less than half the length. I think imma do that

I own a few cold steel swords, and really they’re not as bad as people say, at least the ones I own. As far as pole arms, I only own a spear, but you can tell by the design they don’t really care much about historical accuracy and fancy designs. They basically just say “It has the parts to make it a *insert weapon here* let’s get it out.
@Sheol02
@Sheol02 5 жыл бұрын
Cold Steel has a legit bad rep mainly because of their inconsistent quality: like the swords you own are fine, but the other guy may get the same swords, but that are poorly made, have defects or straight up broken. But honestly, it is understandable, why that happens - Cold Steel, considering to other swords/knives manufacturers, produces: a)budget products; b)at high quantity. They simply cannot have the same quality control as someone like Albion Swords, with prices that are 10 times higher and they produce their swords a smaller quantities. However, the thing that many swords/knives collectors really hate about Cold Steel is their advertisement. They often claim their products to be "The best knives/swords!". Which is obviously false, since they are making budget products. Plus, as I've said, Cold Steel is one if the biggest blade makers out there - their swords are usually the entry point of every sword enthusiast, and any "casual" that might want to buy a sword, cause "swords are cool", is likely to get one from Cold Steel. It's like fast-food to foodies - they utterly despise it, while so many "casual" people love it anyway.
@karkkosvolfe

@@Sheol02 I think it depends on how you are measuring best. You already covered the differences between virtually custom vs economical. Cold Steel seems to design most of theirs based on toughness against use. If you want the higher grade finishing, they make those and you pay more. That said, as pointed out, Cold Steel is a knife making company first. Swords, pole arms etc are a completely different beast from a manufacturing side. Ask Arms and Armor to design a belt knife or a folder able to take hard abuse. They would probably have similar issues to Cold Steel with swords etc. Because that isn't their exacting expertise. What I am getting at is, if you know what you are buying, ask the questions you need to and make the decisions on priority. Cold Steel products are not abhorrent. I doubt either of us has has the kind of budgets for custom &/or mastercrafted. Know what you are buying for the price and decide what is your priorities. Same applies to a lot of other things too, like firearms & ammunition. That said, I have had fewer warranty complaints with Cold Steel than many other companies over the years. Which is a not an abstract positive.

I definitely agree that the unfinished pole and missing screws are not okay. Other than that though, I am quite comfortable with Cold Steel's choices. In my experience, 1055 rusts pretty easily unless coated or polished, especially in my hot, humid, salt-water environment, and coated is a lot cheaper to accomplish. And aside from those aesthetic issues, it seems to me that the halberd is VERY functional and relatively low-visibility, which is exactly what you want in a halberd that you're using on your next tactical mission. Or the zombie apocalypse.

It comes oiled so as to keep the head nice and shiny, it is pre-assembled and is already sharp where it needs to be. I'm not saying that this _excuses_ the problems with it but I'd imagine it's at least _why._ It's just a matter of cold steel being willing to disappoint the 5 customers that bought thus really impractical to shit item the probably make less money on than one of their more common items like knives.

It looks like it was cut from sheet metal instead of forged. Even the socket looks like its rolled sheet metal that had a slit for the blade then welded shut. As for the pole, i could see it needing some shaping. Socket styles like that need the pole to be a little fatter so it bites the pole & gets driven onto the pole more securely but what you got was an unshaped pole, thats just sloppy. Add to it they didnt include a couple of pins to lock the socket & pole together, they'd be getting a nasty phone call about the quality of their goods.
@Picurs

There's no real scientific proven advantage to "forging" a steel blade vs cutting them into shape. There's places like this: www.joinordieknives.com/journal/2014/12/30/forging-vs-stock-removal-knives And also some good information on this 2004 (over 14 yo!) thread: www.bladeforums.com/threads/better-quality-knife-forging-or-stock-removal.288176/ But you can find plenty of sources saying the same. It's all a matter of preference to the making proccess and it's also easier to reshape the material as needed. In the end, the steel sheet was already forged, anyway. Just be careful, diving into the subject can be a real time sinker! You were warned! I agree with the rest, Cold Steel being even sloppier than usual, it seems.

@@Picurs i do agree with u regards the fact there isnt any real scientific proof the forging is better than just cutting to shape. I stated it not being forged because its suppose to be a period reproduction & for it to be an accurate reproduction, it would need to be forged. They couldnt just plug in the dimensions & let the plasma cutter go like we can today. I do appreciate the way you responded & brought links to support your point. pyruleanfire demon Well, plate can be cut to shape with hand tools after basic flattering. As for the welding effect on tempering, just riveting on a langot or two should be an easier and cheaper option than the round broomstick adapter they welded on. If cause there are also combination sockets that have a round part like this one, but extending down the sides as a pair of langots. (sorry if I spelt langot wrong, new word).

I would love to see a SOULCALUBER weapon breakdown covering historical influences and fantasy aspects as well as notes on practicality and points for coolness. With SOULCSLIBER VI coming out in November it would be perfect timing and it would probably get a lot of views and draw more attention to the game, which is said to be the last in the series if the sales aren’t great. I’m a die hard fan of the series because it is one of very few weapons based fighting games. I also dig the lore and fantastic aspects of it. If you’re still reading, thank you for doing so.

I'd like to point out that the English bill made by Arms and Armor, although it is beautifully forged it does have a handle with a round profile. As you point out Skall, a round handle is not conducive to edge alignment. As much as I love Arms and Armor, the handle is preventing me from spending $450 on a new polearm. Strangely, they did not repeat this with the Italian bill, which has an octagonal handle profile.

0:41 needs those "menacing" (ゴゴゴゴ) katakana in the background for full effect. Also, in all honesty, being as affordable as it is does make it kind of attractive. I tend to spend the bulk of my money on other hobbies, but I still occasionally buy weapons as a side hobby. A polearm that looks badass and doesn't break the bank certainly has it's place. I would be nice if there were more polearms on the market, though.

Skall, you ordered item #89MSW, but you specifically requested the squared shaft, which is designed for item #89PA and is not tapered. I agree that a proper halberd should have a squared shaft and they really should have sent you screws. CS certainly has some "consistency" problems and the fit/finish is hit or miss, but the non-tapered shaft?? In this case, it's technically your fault :) Love the channel! I hope KZfaq stops whatever shit they're trying to pull with your content. Best of luck, friend.

Hey Skalla, i just got into "Jugger" and i was wondering if your expertise could help me with deciding what type of "weapon" i should specialise in. i know it doesn't translate well to actual medieval fighting, because the weight of "weapons" is very low and target areas are different, but i think you might find the sport interesting enough to give it some thought. cheers for your awesome videos and thanks!

I've assembled all sorts of pole arms from shafts I've made or bought. I prefer red oak or ash shafts and would prefer to buy a head, sans shaft. Best tool for shaping the head-mount is a cheap Harbor Freight belt sander with the 6 inch disc sander on the side

Skallagrim is there any chance of you acquiring a wrought iron (not steel) helmet and testing it with your windlass crossbow and/or longbow and/or other wrought iron weapons? I believe that would bear more historical relevance to medieval armor.

Love polearms, really wish they would be featured far more frequently in film/books/games. Very few RPGs let you use polearms or spears or such, especially with shields. It is a shame.

If you have a little skill with making handles you could always make a homemade billhook to add to your collection. Just replace the handle on a bush hook (or ditch edging tool, I've seen it called both for some reason) with a polearm handle. That's actually kind of what they did in the past it seems. Even before I found out about medieval weapons I could tell that tool could do serious damage unaltered, let alone specifically modified.

Both very good and very bad. ( Situational ) Actually you need strict formations of disciplined soldiers (or peasent militia) stationed behind obstacles or standing higher ground compared to the enemy troops. Horse back maneuvers as mounted polearm units charging as shock troops;wearing heavy armor was popular- worldwide. To hit heavy where the enemy is weakened (especially from rear or wings) Very good for defending a spot or push the enemy formations. Whereas you would need extra shield and one handed weapon ranks, guarding your flanks/wings. Else you will still be easy to harass. Very weak against long range to close ups against units with heavy tip arrows, projectiles, javelins, one handed weapons paired with shield etc. ( surrounding the flanks of polearms ) Worst against mounted units with ranged weapons. Kited to death. Entire weight is packed up at the end of the pole so; extremely heavy to swing compared to all other weapons, very hard to maneuver, good only for thrusting or dropping its weight and pull back or push vertically. Ineffective horizontal offensive or defensive ability. Polearms ranks were hard to move effectively if you need to restation the troops immediately. Short spears paired up with shield is the only weapon with ranged advantage but also can compete most other one handed weapons at duels. Once again, they have lower defensive and higher offensive ability with ,all natural, strong lunges in to thrusts. But they re much lighter to carry around.

If I were to buy a Cold Steel Polearm it would be the Sergeant's Halberd. I was surprised to see the amount of wood shaping required for your model. I had a better prefit from a a stock waxwood staff I bought from Kennesaw to go with the Amazon spear head. 1065 forged/heat treated high carbon steel spear head only $30 US and the six foot white waxwood shaft a mere $20. I anticipated a bit of sanding but, damn! if yours was WAY off! Mine took a couple hours hand sanding (while watching KZfaq video or Netflix) but would've been 3 minutes on a decent belt sander. I've had great experience with Cold Steel in the past with reasonably priced offerings like the Shanghai Shadow, GI Tanto (for my nephew, Semper Fi!) and an Indian Ball Head War Club for my son. I have two pair of the Shanghai Shadows as hand to hand tools that double as throwing knives. The GI Tanto is one I'd also buy again as a hard use, survival and throwing weapon. Your Swiss Halberd? Maybe not. That's a lot of sand paper!!!

I actually just purchased thiss too after i saw the CS youtube video its a shame when the head of the polearm arrived the shaft was missing and i notified them. I just got the replacement shaft and they sent me a shaft from like the hunting spears, mines too thin, fits all the way in to the halberd hold and idk what i'm going to do. probably go get an oak railing or something and sand down to right size

I share you love of polearms, Skall! It made me wonder: how much is there in terms of manuals for spears, halberds and other polearms? There are quite a number of Chinese kung fu styles that incorporate formal techniques in their manuals, seemingly also intended in 1 vs. 1 situations. I can imagine spears not having much in HEMA, given that it was a mass peasant weapon, but what do you know of the other varieties?

There are a lot of spear manuals actually, it's just people don't like it as much as swords. Most of the longsword masters we know all have spear manuals including Johannes Liechtenauer, Joachim Meyer, Fiore dei Liberi and many more.

If you have a base to compare where does the cold steel halberd compare to their boar hunting spear? Personally find the boar spear nice for its price, and it’s haft just places on but didn’t have pre drilled holes. So I had to hand screw in the screws, but I also bought it from a local sword shop

Halberd is one evolution more improved and versatil than the spear, we can say that halberd is a mixed between war hammer, poleaxe and spear, depending of his design, you can use the halberd of five ways, like a hammer, axe, spike and spear. 1: The Hammer is used for break defense enemies (shields, armors). 2: The Spike is used for parring, grip and disarmed enemies (one handed swords, two handed swords, axes, maces). 4: The Axe is for vertical and horizontal attacks 3:The Spear is used for empaling enemies. 5: The polearm help you keep your enemies long away from you. Halberds are cool and useful weapons for close combat for protect entrances, but its "shitty" in a battle, because you can have many people around you and attack you in different directions.
