He’s a weirdo. And while I don’t love his voice or style ( I def don’t hate it, it just doesn’t quite grasp me enough to pull me in) I do enjoy that he seems to really branch out in a few projects, he’s creative and talented. I want to love his projects…But I just don’t. Respect him though. I have watched and listened to a lot of his stuff. He is mad creative, and it is interesting.

I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be Sean. His father who he was so close to was murdered when he was so very young. Tragic loss coupled with the constant comparison to his Dad musically. That's a heavy load for anyone never mind the son of a Beatle. He has done his daddy proud. Good on you Sean. You are a force in your own right.

Sean toured with the Frog Brigade last summer, so keep an eye out for them as well. And check out the Claypool Lennon Delirium stuff too if you haven't yet - it's a mix of the dreamy proggy stuff Sean excels at and the eclectic metal/funk stuff Les is known for, all wrapped up into one.

I personally think, Sean Lennon is his own man. Yes, he's got some of the spirit of his father and the creative sense of his mother but most we all put him under a Beatles microscope for every little thing? Can we all overlook these things? It's time to allow him to create without so much prejudgement over what he does or does not do. Really sad, I think he a very talented and creative artist in his own right. So is Charlotte Kemp Muhl and the rest of the band. Please support this band, this is real music not Justin Bieber or One Direction or whatever is on the radio today.
@CorduroyPaco5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%. I hate seeing comparisons to his father over every little thing...poor guy has had to deal with that his whole life...not only did he lose his father in one of the most awful (and public) ways but he can never escape his shadow. I love Sean for Sean and the music he makes which is some of the best music of the day.
@danopticon4 жыл бұрын
I love GoaSTT a lot, and Sean’s bass work with Cibo Matto (remember that??), and honestly I kinda forget he’s someone famous’s son… for real! in a sense, because John Lennon was alive for most of my childhood, and the Beatles had only just broken up and their music was literally recent and not exactly “canonized” the way it is now, and the ‘70s didn’t yet feel like the ‘60s were ever going to end or that progress would stop (Reagan - ugh! - wasn’t even a rumor yet), and Sean only much later became famous, and pretty much in his own right, and is close to my age and almost feels like a peer, I never really connect him to John Lennon the rock/pop/art icon so much. Sean Lennon to me mostly feels like some guy I might’ve known and gone to school with who became famous, and is - as opposed to his dad, who feels eternal, embedded in history, at the apex of pop music’s pantheon - his own relatable, accessible phenomenon. Having said that, since Sean speaks with an American accent, it’s… well, I don’t know if weird is the right word, but especially in the context of his not wanting to live in his famous father’s shadow: do you think he _knows_ he sings in a Liverpool accent? I mean, that he does that _is_ a little unusual, isn’t it? And he’s definitely doing it, right? I’m not the only one who hears it? I mean, he really doesn’t seem to want to exploit his father’s fame. But singing in an accent different from your speaking voice is usually a conscious choice. And singing with a Liverpudlian accent is so regionally specific, and can’t be “coincidence” given who Sean’s dad is… I guess, if he’s not trying to ride his dad’s coattails, and if he maybe really doesn’t know he’s doing it, maybe he learned to sing from his dad and his dad’s albums? so he only know how to sing sounding like he grew up on Liverpool’s docks? But I think that’s what reminds people of John Lennon when they hear Sean sing: whether they know it or not, what they’re recognizing is the accent. It’s likely Sean is bi-dialectical: in the same way that kids who grow up hearing three languages grow up polyglots and can speak all three, kids who grow up immersed in more than one accent can usually switch between them fluidly. I’ve just never heard of someone not wanting to be associated with another person’s fame, but then adopting that person’s accent when performing in the same field as that person. Hey Charlotte, if you get tired of having a famous, wealthy, talented, and well-adjusted boyfriend, call me!

@@danopticon agree.. my Mum was British and barley lost her strong accent in the 30 years in America.. I was born and grew up in NY.. the kids and teachers at school would have never understood me if I spoke like I did at home with my Mum.. so I was assimilated into speaking “American” to fit in.. but I never really fit in, inside bc inside I was British and thought in a kind of British framework.. I never realized it til much later.. that I was actually a modified combo.. now as an older adult, I am clearly half n haulf (insert British accent) I am actually way more British in my thinking than I ever realized myself.. it’s simply innate. So I would think that socially to fit in (somewhat) the American accent comes out but when deep in creativity innately he is very much a Brit and like his Dad.. Very British.. and it is similar to being bi-lingual in some ways. Taah.. ever so for understanding.. ☺️

A friend handed me his history essay after it had been marked by our stern lecturer. It was covered in red ink telling him all the points he had missed. Equipped with his good points and the lecturers suggestions I endeavoured to produce the "ultimate" essay. It was good, damn good. My friend agreed. Eventually I received it back. No red ink just a mark in a circle at the end. Despite covering everything in depth, I received a lower mark. After listening to Seans music, the depths, his obvious skills, his intelligence, I understand my lecturer was simply bored how derivative and unoriginal I really was.

The lead-off song could have been something on Gish, those minor chord runs and even the lyrics. It is similar and perhaps shows influence but is not derivative in any way. These guys have great stylistic range. This (grunge retro?) is very distinct from the 1966 zombies style cabaret-rock that drove them through the “Luxembourg Gardens.” Hearing music like this that is so recent makes me feel better about the world. This man had done beautiful things combining his nature and his nurture, his genetics and his genius, in about the best way anyone could imagine. Wow, thank you Sean and Charlotte.

Sean, it's an understatement to say your father would be proud. I wish you had stuck with the Saber Tooth group it's just so...I really don't have words. The level of musicianship combined with creativity is...again I don't have words. Let's just say your father would be very proud. I'm not sure how you even do all of that, to be honest. Now if we can also switch to a very cheerful angle on it, you will have the entire spectrum covered as it is very heavy in ways that conjure up things from the depths of the soul I can't identify as bad but most certainly very, very heavy.
