Has there ever been a book about who the ghosts were before the book?

I'm pretty sure the ghosts are based off of pagan gods which predate Christianity because part of Charles Dickens' message was aimed towards the social issues and hypocrisy of Christianity so if you're curios about who they are/ their story I recommend looking into pagan gods and the pagan religion
