Nottingham castle has its share of ghosts, so we ventured back for some Halloween fun!
The castle's most famous ghost has to be that of Roger Mortimer, the Earl of March, who was captured at the castle by Edward III, dragged as a prisoner through the network of tunnels, and eventually hung as a commoner. First sightings and rumours of Mortimer's ghost appeared around 1921, attracting so many tourists that police officers were placed at the entrance to Mortimer's Hole...
The ghostly voice of Queen Isabella, the She-Wolf of France, was also heard calling out in the tunnels..."Fair son, have pity on gentle Mortimer"...
Perhaps the most anguishing cries heard are those of the 28 children, sons of Welsh noblemen, hung by King John on the castle ramparts. The children had been kept as hostages at Nottingham castle, but when King John was out hunting in Sherwood Forest and received the news that Llewelyn the Great was attacking the English border, John ordered the immediate execution of the children...
