And do you know these people personally? How would you know his parents are to blame? This girl knew he was planning to commit suicide, and instead of telling his family, her parents, or the authorities, she encouraged him and pushed him to go through with it. Did his family do that? No. She had a very heavy hand in this tragedy, regardless of what you might ignorantly think.

@@rebecaa7482 they are saying their was domestic abuse going on in the home between the mother and father and that Conrad’s father had beat him up one day and there are police reports that prove it. I don’t know what to believe. There is no such thing as perfect home life or family. But I do not think his parents are to blame. I don’t think they seen this coming. I can not say the same for her who he called in the process of killing himself, he told her he was scared because his truck was filling with poison and instead of telling him to get help, calling the police anything to help him, instead she told him to get back in. That to me says a lot. I live a town away from Conrad Roy’s family and I’ve heard many people say good things about this family I do not know them. This is just my opinion.

Me too. I hate how the media basically made it a story about how she was this horrible person. After watching the HBO documentary, it was quite clear the real picture was quite a bit different. He had a history of depression and suicidal thoughts (IIRC other attempts also). His home life was dysfunctional and his father was abusive (police were called at one point).

@chellymrdillon Conrad's father was abusive to him (police were called and conrad had marks on his face--this was all over Conrad not putting away a dish--) and I just don't think (in my opinion) his parents cared enough about his mental problems considering Conrad attempted suicide numerous times and his mom claimed she really didn't know what was going on with him

It does not in anyway excuse what she did but they were both severely unstable and in need of help. This whole case was a gray zone in the law and it's why Judge Moniz was so explicitly clear when he announced the decision in the case.

You should watch the HBO documentary, it shows that the both of them had very severe mental illnesses, he was very abusive towards her and they were toxic to each other, a real tragedy, she needed a lot of help too.

this is the sad part. she will. and they probably will "humanise" her and paint her as a victim of circumstance.

And this is an awful attitude to have, just by watching the documentary you can tell she is a complete mess. Conrad was also a complete mess, had a father admitting to beating him up and saying it was right and he would do it again, a mother who denies ever knowing he was feeling suicidal eventhough he had tried 4 times before with 1 of them putting him in hospital. There isn’t even any evidence that she ever told him to get back in the car, it was never written in a text and the calls aren’t recorded, after 2 months she claimed she told him to get back in, this is a girl so out of touch with reality that she had been contradicting herself constantly and now suddenly what she says has gotta be true. The fact is that Conrad wanted to die, he convinced her that nothing would ever get better and this would be best for him, he made her believe his mum was on board with it, he manipulated her into supporting him and made her swear to never tell anyone, if he never met her he would still be dead today because clearly his parents weren’t gonna get him the help he needed. This girl wasn’t living in reality at all, she wanted desperately to help him and he manipulated her into believing this was the best way. The only things at blame here is mental illness and Conrad’s parents.

She is the most innocent one on this case. If you even read the report at all. You can clearly see the girl had done nothing but discouraged him for months. Even Conrad at some point suggesting HER to commit suicide as well. And thats aside from constantly talking down to her. Nothing She or anyone could say or do would prevent him from commiting suicide, He had planned it for a long long time. He made up his mind & the girl was the only person He could even speak to

He wasn't all that normal either. The way he texted her and talked about killing himself was not normal. He wasn't even confiding in someone he knew but someone he could take advantage of. She has mental health issues too. I don't think it mattered that he told her about his thoughts of that she told him to do it. He was inevitably going to do it no matter what.

Honestly the trailer makes her look very cold and calculating. I’m not sure that the show will show her much sympathy. That said, I don’t think we need a show about an event like this.

They should care about the truth. Research the best they can the portray it honestly. Whether or not she’s a cold hearted monster or someone can sympathize, their job is to the tell the story. Never mind in the trailer she seems like a crazy attention hungry psycho but you don’t pay everyone’s Hulu fees.If you don’t like movies trying to get the character’s perspective why watch something based on real people? Plenty of one dimensional bs to fill the hours up. If they didn’t try to under her motives then they should have never done the movie. Period.

I feel like the new trend in biopics is not to justify the aggressor, but to show that very often they look at themselves as the hero in their own story. Sometimes giving the monster a chance to 'explain' to us why we're no different and what their motivations were opens a door into their psyche. Not for just entertainment, but to educate and inform. Go back 100 years and see how unlikely it would be for an average member of the American public to believe a young white girl would do this successfully. I absolutely think these are types of stories that need to be told, I just really hope they do a good job of being respectful.

Speaking as someone who has been on the receiving end of female bullying and abuse, and who has been pushed to consider suicide and self-harm, I like that this film is presenting Michelle Carter as she is; an outwardly attractive young woman, who is also an inwardly terrible human-being. Remember, looks can be deceiving, and outer beauty does not confer inner beauty.

Manipulation can be incredibly powerful, especially from someone you care about. In the end, only Michelle knows the true motive. The fact that she told him to go back into the car when he was at his most vulnerable state - that proves her guilt to me.

It seems triggering & from someone who has struggled with depression on and off all my life and then with my mental health, I would rather just stay clear from it. That is really sad and I am glad you clarified. I never heard about this story but I got that vibe from watching it.

Maybe they'll explore that idk, I still think ill watch to see how they tell the story. It is shocking though reading comments that saying things like "this is my favorite case" or "I can't wait, I hope Elle Fanning wins an Emmy". It feels really unsettling and insensitive. I think they should have left it alone but now I'm just hoping for the best. Maybe that's naive of me but I'm an optimist.

It doesn’t look like they are glamorizing it. It looks like what it would look like through the eyes of the world. As someone who didn’t know anything about the case at first glance in the start it looks like a girl who very much looked guilty. I say this because most trailers don’t really start by spoiling a death, unless its CSI etc. But like CSI now that we know there’s a death we immediately think the remainder of the show/movie will evolve around this death. The parents empathize and the people unknowing of who she really is act fond of her. The people opposing her, the police and investigators are out right saying what she did was awful. Two sides one opposing one with or unsure of her. Please explain what part of the trailer is glamorizing???

@@WickerSticksSinema I’ve recently been watching The Dropout on Hulu and when it comes to real life stories like that, it doesn’t feel as miserable or tragic when watching that story unfold compared to this tragedy that happened several years ago. I personally had not heard about the story behind Elizabeth Holmes before and the premise behind what the show is about did intrigue me because I hadn’t seen a story like that before.

The media painted her as a one dimensional villain when reality was much more nuanced than that. I’m not saying what she did wasn’t wrong but Conrad already had tried to commit suicide two times before. Sadly it seemed like a matter of time bc he wasn’t getting any help. If anything I would put most of the blame on his parents, his father was physically abusive and his mother was neglectful.

Ppl take them as gospel but they're really being sold a certain narrative. Like the Staircase for example. There's probably misinformation out there but documentaries really aren't as reliable as people think they are. They can cherrypick info and manipulate your feelings.
