The Boston Globe

7 жыл бұрын

Four stories tall, loud as a locomotive, and with at least as many moving parts, The Boston Globe’s printing presses on Morrissey Boulevard will come to a stop next month.
Since 1958 they’ve kept a tight schedule, pressing ink onto newsprint and churning out daily papers into the wee hours, long after New England has drifted off to sleep.
The seasoned hands who play this finely tuned instrument have done so for decades; some families for generations - skin flecked with ink, senses attuned to the pulse of the machine as it turns out tomorrow’s front pages. Soon this nocturnal symphony will end, at least in Dorchester, as the Globe moves all of its printing to a new facility in Taunton.
Here’s a video tribute to the machines and the people who have kept the news rolling all these years.

Bitcoin exchanging above $23,000 as the year 2020 comes to an end, and bitcoin is still showing positive signs. The bulls are still very strong and active and with the recent halving, the price of bitcoin has set a new highs this year 2020 as predicted by professional binary analyst, such as Mr Richard Bruce of Binary Trade Options. What this indicates is that now is the perfect time to accumulate and increase your portfolio either through dollar-cost averaging or trading. DCA is good but less effective compared to trading I am currently trading under the guidance of Mr Richard Bruce and investing in the platform he introduced to me. I have made 15 BTC from my initial 1.5 BTC in less than 4 months. Investors should have trade experts guiding them in their trade so as to make more profit and Mr Richard is someone I highly recommend, so if you are a newbie or lack the needed knowledge in trading in binary, you can reached him directly on Instagram @richard_brucefx or whatsapp +1 971 512 2836 for inquires into a profitable trading system

My dad worked in a printing press until the company went bankrupt in 2007. I remember going into the press and watching the printing process. It was certainly memorizing.

I spent 30 years running presses, they are right how it feels there is nothing like it. I did get out of it when the industry starting falling apart and made the switch to digital at a mail fulfillment center printing med statements and delinquent notices, never did care for it that much for it. Even though, I did get work on a single web roll to roll HPT200 ink jet, if you had a web break, you were up the creek, the web was 450 ft from end to end, it could run 52,000 an hour (every page was different name and color)

@@chikkenbonz Mostly Goss Urbanites and News-/Color Kings, with time spent on various sheetfed and roll-to-roll presses. A while ago I wrote a long-winded, incoherent, self indulgent synopsis of my work history, so if you... Naaah, screw that; it's already written, so here it is if you wanna read it. If you have watched a lot of these videos, you may have seen it already in a slightly abridged form: I did this for so long that I remember when the plate burners used those brittle, smoky electrode sticks to burn the plates. I went from flyboy at 18 to operator at 56; from 1972 to 2005; from newspapers to job shops to businesses forms to newspapers, from San Diego and Encinitas to San Luis Obispo/Atascadero/Paso Robles, CA. I worked on and repaired 8- and 12-unit Goss Urbanites, as well as 7-unit Fairchild News Kings and 9-unit Fairchild Color Kings, in addition to Harris and Didde Glaser roll-to-roll web presses. I developed an ability to mix Pantone colors that matched the book exactly, including 6-digit opaque inks. The in-between times were spent on Hamada, Multilith and A.B. Dick sheet fed offset duplicators. A desire to make myself more valuable inspired me to learn how to operate, repair and maintain an SLS 1000 10-station inserting machine, IDAB stackers, and various portable conveyor tables and tying and strapping machines. Because the press work often went later than the people in the composing, camera and plate making departments worked, it was necessary to gain a working knowledge of those processes, too. In one shop I also got to climb around for hours on and explore a non-operational early-20th-century 12 unit, 3-story-high Hoe letterpress that sported brass guard- and handrails, that had been shut down in a labor dispute years before our press was installed. The big ol' Hoe (get your mind outta the gutter) was still webbed, rolls in place, thick-skinned ink still in the fountains. In a time of powerful unions, the press crew shut it down and walked out in the middle of a press run. When I first started printing, it was because I'd just gotten married and had to find work right away quick. I spent big time filling out applications anywhere that didn't require experience. A newspaper/job shop was the first place that called back. I never dreamed it would become a life long trade. My official title was "donkey", in the printing vernacular a warm body with minimal brain function whose purpose was to keep the pressmen from becoming exhausted by doing anything. We were summoned with "Hey! Need a donkey over here!", which meant "I don't care if you're on lunch break! Get your ass over there and shaft some rolls!" All for the generous compensation of $1.40 an hour. I couldn't believe the things those wild, insane bastards did. I mean, the whole trade was like that at the time; every one of the people I worked with either drank too much or couldn't drink anymore. Swing shift would punch out at 23:30 hours, buy a keg and put it on the loading dock, and go home when dayside shift came to work. Drugs (stimulants) were ubiquitous, handed out freely for the 14, 18, 20+ hour shfts, and no one wore ear protection - I didn't for my first 10 or 12 years; I don't know why I can still hear well. We stuck our gloveless hands in flammable solvent for hours, without a thought for what carcinogens were absorbed through our skin. The labor laws in Cali back then allowed for overtime pay after 40 hours, but not after 8. Consequently, it wasn't uncommon to work a shift of 40 hours straight, then get sent home before OT pay began. I'm astonished that no one got flattened. Safety laws and measures were ignored, but nobody cared; that was for ⁋µ🅍ꌦʂ (the intended word wouldn't pass the KZfaq™ Mythical Council of Elders® Code). Boy, were we _stupid._ Did you ever use monkey poles? They were steel poles about 1½" in diameter with 4- or 5-square-inch steps clamped the length of the pole on alternating sides at staggered intervals. We'd climb down the pole holding on with one hand and gripping a 90 lb. steel roll shaft in the other. What idiocy. The terminology was wonderful; outside of the pressroom, if you said to someone, "After we mounted the new blankets, I went up on the balloon to adjust the trolleys so the webs would feed," they would back away slowly and use soothing words to keep you calm until psychiatric help arrived. One day I realized I had become one of those wild, insane bastards when I wasn't looking. I couldn't wait to get away from the stink of ink, but a few years after retiring I found myself wishing I could stand on a 3rd-level, ink-stained, diamond patterned deck plate once again to cut color and register perfectly a 4-color process photo that will appear above the fold in news racks and stands all over the county for everyone (meaning me) to admire; or stand at the console, finger on the go-faster button, as I yell over the roaring silence of the press, "SAVE 'EM!" When I left the trade after uncountable trips up and down those cold steel ladders and poles, my legs were as hard as that steel, but my knees were shot and arthritic. I have titanium wrapped around my spine, too. It's just as well; I didn't have to watch the big, heavy Sunday editions, like those I threw when I was 14, shrink down to the pathetic pamphlets they have become today; or see the presses that created them get cut up and sold for scrap because now the individual papers are all printed at one facility in another city miles away. No one knows how to make those four-cornered paper hats anymore. What a shame. Now I bore disinterested acquaintances with a running critique of the flaws that are invisible to them in some meaningless free coupon shopper as I examine it minutely, page by page. Boy, do I feel old.
