The Godfather is one of the best crime movies I've watched! The characters played their part perfectly (and there's great character development too!). Kudos to all the actors 👏👏
The tone, tension and atmosphere of the scenes were just right.
If The Godfather is already so good, can Part II and Part III live up as it's sequels?

A reason that translations were not included for the Italian being spoken during the murder scene in the restaurant is because no critical information is being shared in the dialogue- the important part for audiences to focus on - is in Michael’s face, which conveys his inner feelings and the tension building from camera movements, music and editing. The strength of the scene is from the actors’ reactions rather than what they are saying. Any time that translation is not provided for Italian language means that the specific words are less important than the overall tone and visuals of the scene.

Because Sonny said in front of Solozzo that he thought it was a good idea, Solozzo thought maybe he could remove Vito and Sonny could be coerced into going along with it. I'm glad you noticed in the hospital scene that Michael noticed that his hand wasn't shaking - that's actually a pivotal moment in his character arc.

Great job following all the characters and story line. Far better than most others who I've seen react to this classic. As far as Part 2, I would strongly recommend you watch (and react to) it much sooner than later. It is every bit as impressive as this one was. Some say even better. I'm undecided, but both are absolutely top tier. Part 3 is a different matter but we'll save that for another day.

6:42 - It's a traditional bawdy Sicilian song, "Cc'è la luna 'n menzu ô mari" ("There shines the Moon above the sea"). The lyrics are a dialogue between mother and daughter on whom the daughter should marry; every time a candidate is mentioned, the mother worries he might use one of the tools of his trade (with a, uhm, suggestive shape) on her daughter - "Should I marry her to the butcher? He goes and comes around, always with some sausage in his hand... If the fancy strikes him, he may 'sausage up' my daughter!"

Before automobiles, people crowded into cities (to minimize distance between things), and most street traffic was horse-drawn. In modern times, we have forgotten how much horse manure was deposited in the streets. During warm weather, this was breeding ground for billions of horse flies, which are bigger than house flies, and they BITE. Up until the 1920', people covered most of their skin by clothing, even in the warmest weather. Men's shirts had a collar which covered much of the neck, particularly on the sides and back. As the cloth wilted by getting moist perspiration, it was held in place with a piece of cloth which could be tightened as needed, hence a "tie." (In Victorian times, they came up with the idea of a detachable collar which could be starched to cardboard-like stiffness. They were generally higher, with the tie visible. Later it became fashional to fold the collar over, covering the tie where it wrapped around the neck, although the Godfather and a few others were wearing this high collar in the wedding scene.) Almost all men in all walks of life wore a suit - even college students. I went to college in 1968 and even that late, students were not allowed to dinner in the college dining hall without a suit coat and tie. (Over that year, students went in to eat with the mandatory coat and tie over shorts and a ratty t-shirt, and the rule was abandoned at the end of that year.) For men employed in blue-collar jobs, they often had a required uniform but this included a bowtie. The ordinary tie was liable to get caught in machinery. Of course, as in this movie, bowties were also required in very formal settings like a marriage ceremony. PS - I can't recall ever wearing a bowtie, and if I did, it would have been a clip-on, as I have no idea how to tie one.
@henryellow
@henryellow Жыл бұрын
Before automobiles, it must've smelled terrible in the streets with horse manure everywhere. I can imagine people not daring to eat outside due to flies everywhere (and the smell, of course). The introduction of automobiles wasn't any better (now the smell of manure is replaced with suffocating smoke). I'm certainly grateful I didn't have to go through that. Yes indeed, the reason I have that attire was because I needed to wear one in the past. On many occasions. Not anymore though. A formal uniform with a tie (while operating heavy machinery) is just asking for trouble 😅 I've never worn an actual bowtie either! 😂 Thanks for sharing, John! 😊

@@henryellow In the Middle Ages, people in Europe used to throw the contents of their chamber pots (i.e., human waste) out their windows into the streets) But autos by comparison, are FAR cleaner. In 1920's, the men's short-sleeve shirt was invented, and woman's dresses rose far above the knee for the first time in a thousand years ("flappers") in response to the great reduction in horse traffic.

Strictly speaking, in Italian, the prefix "Don-" doesn’t (again, strictly) mean “Boss”. It’s an honorific prefix that is used before a person's name. It is derived from the Latin word "Dominus," which means "lord" or "master." The prefix "Don-" is used to show respect and is typically used before the first name of a man.

@BlueShadow777 's answer is quite accurate. I just wanted to add that the use of "Don" varies, as so many things do, between southern and central-nothern Italy. In southern Italy and Sicily it's used as a honorific for important or respected persons in general, in central and northern Italy is usually emplyed before a person's first name or full name to indicate that they are a Catholic priest. "Don Mario" in Palermo is the well-known and respected Mario, in Milan he's Father Mario.

The reason Michael asked Carlo about Barzini was because he wanted to be 100 percent sure that Carlo was guilty - becouse his sister. Dropping the gun is important because his family, with their connections, can make all the other evidence go away. But if he's caught with the murder weapon, there is noting they can do about that. For example, if there's a witness? The family might have the witness killed, or pressured to change their story.

A little late but here is some random thoughts. First, well done. Vito Corleone is based Frank Costello. Luca Brasi was based on Willie Moretti. Moretti was supposedly the one that forced band leader Tommy Dorsey to let Sinatra out of his contract. Willie was nothing like Luca though. The actor that played Luca was once muscle for the Colombo family. Johnny Fontaine is based on Frank Sinatra. With tiny, minute shades of Joe E Lewis. Moe Green was based on Bugsy Siegel. The reason that they decide to kill Don Corleone is solely the fault of Sonny. When they were meeting the Turk for the first time, Sonny foolishly spoke out. His father tried to brush it off and dismiss it, and later chastised Sonny for speaking out. But the damage was done. It was the pebble that started the avalanche. Because the Barzini faction then knew, that while the Don was dead set against drugs, Sonny really wanted the deal. So they had to get rid of the Don and get Sonny in charge. But the Don lived and the Corleone family kept their power.
@henryellow
@henryellow Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing 😊 The thing is... even if the assassination succeeded and Sonny became the Don, he would be hell bent on revenge. Would he still accept the deal in that case? Unless Barzini was willing to let Sonny run rampant until things eventually cool off (meaning Barzini was willing to sacrifice some pawns for profit in the long run).
@AceMoonshot
@AceMoonshot Жыл бұрын
@@henryellow Well, at the time, Barzini was still the unknown puppeteer. His family would not be on the front lines in the war. As long as The Turk was alive, I don't think Barzini cared who got whacked. The Tattaglia family were cannon fodder to him and the Turk.

"Don" doesn't mean boss in italian, it's a title originally given to members of the chuch or nobility and later to every highly respected person. It's originally a spanish thing but the spanish exported it in southern italy when they conquered it in the 16th century. One thing that the movie does wrong is that Don always follows the first name and never the surname, so "Don Corleone" is inaccurate, "Don Vito" would be the correct way to say it.

Glad you liked it. GF2 is widely viewed as just as good or better than GF. In GF2 you get a prequel and sequel in one movie. You get the backstory of how Vito Corleone came to power (played well by a young Robert Deniro). Then you see how Michael now runs the family and contrasts how Vito did when he was Godfather. GF3 had a very high bar set by the first two films and was criticized when it was released in 1990. But over time GF3 has gained acceptance but is unfairly compared to the expectations set by GF & GF2. GF3 is a fine movie and concludes The Corleone saga. You see how events from the two films affected Michael because they are much older now in GF3. Do yourself a favor and watch all three films.

@@henryellow Yeah, "those people" are idiots, lol. If ever there is a litmus test as to who has taste, and who doesn't, it's "The Godfather Part 3". What a waste of time and money and talent. When I saw it in the movie theatre, the audience LAUGHED at it. That should tell you everything. The studio couldn't even come up with the money to bring back Tom Hagen (the great Robert Duvall, fantastic actor). The original script revolved around Tom Hagen! Aside from the unrealistic 90s action movie garbage (a helicopter firing into a NYC skyscraper?), the LOOK of the movie is atrocious.....it does not have the same visual style as the first two. It's supposed to be a period piece that takes place in the 70s, and it looks like the late 80s. It's got the stupidest, creepiest love story subpolot. Al Pacino is terrible in the movie, he's nothing like Michael Corleone. Al Pacino even has said he didn't feel the character when he was making it. It just sucks beyond all words, it DISGUSTS me that people will take YOUR time up watching such mediocrity when you could be watching masterpieces. Instead of watching the crappy Godfather Part 3, you could have watched the movie that Al Pacino (Michael) and John Cazale (Fredo) did the very next year in 1975: the incredible, classic "Dog Day Afternoon". A masterpiece that hardly has any reactions! And it's a total beloved classic! I could go on and on. Unfortunately, most subscribers to reaction channels are dopey Americans with really dumb tastes. Like ten year old boys in the bodies of grown adults, it's pathetic. I hope you continue to hit classics, and also I hope you do some movies that no one else does. So many reaction channels do the same movies over and over again, and there are so many super classics that haven't been done yet. "Sophie's Choice", "Bonnie & Clyde", these are super classics. you're probably holding back an adequately savage mountain of contempt for the villains in movies but if you want followers you'll have to unleash that savagery in your reactions. a calm, reflective gently expressed perspective won't' 'rally the troops' to hear you, friend.
