Gagarin's Legacy: A Silent Sea (2011)
When Gagarin became the first man in space, he was part of a group of astronauts who had fired the USSR to space domination. We look back at his achievement and the people who shaped it, in this extraordinary HD film.

Plumes of smoke mushroom around the rocket as it shakes itself free, slowly at first and then shuddering speeds away from the earth. "That day the era of humanity in space started", Kubasov, a fellow astronaut, says of Gagarin's feat. The men and women of the USSR space programme look back on it fondly, it was the pinnacle of their efforts, a glorious symbol of the USSR's might and prowess. The man who helped design Sputnik describes the three most important moments in space travel, the first satellite, the first man in space, the first man on the moon; two of the three were Russian victories. But in Russia, while this may be the year we remember Gagarin, his and the Soviet Union's achievements in space have long been buried by forgetfulness. "Nowadays you stop someone in the street, they wouldn't know who Gagarin is", says his niece. Yet even if the world has moved on and space travel is off the agenda, they are still proud of what they achieved in what now appears to have been the astronaut's golden age, "The importance of space exploration has not declined, but now nobody cares."

Such an amazing movie! Funny how poor these astronauts are today and so rich in the same time. You can sense the nostalgia over soviet times, when the values were different. The scene were they drank for the youth that is interested in the space program made me share a tear. Слава Советский Человек! Слава трудовому советскому народу !

Nothing but respect for these Russians. Not to mention that many hardworking scientists and engineers worked their butts off behind the scene. It is worse than tragic that the Russian space program halted. We know the main culprit was the cold war which drained the resources of the Soviet Union. But I do understand why there are no trust among countries. That was the way we were and it will stay this way until the end of our species.

This documentary was phenomenal. Though those monumental achievements in Soviet-era space exploration were most decidedly awe-inspiring - the aspect of this film that captured me the most was the focus on the human element; I appreciated the true-life connection to a few of the people who helped change space travel from a fanciful dream to an astounding reality. Thanks so much for posting.

You can disagree with politics of Soviet union but damn they have gone from simple farmers to astronauts in less then 50 years.

Just find it curious that Gagarin came from a royal family with money... is picked as first choice... and in a time when socialism denounced such connections (some got Syberia, others got to bean astronaut, Sure all legit!

If the Great Apollo programs were hoaxes, I guess the Russian, Chinese, British, Japanese, German, and French scientists must be really stupid because they all officially recognize the moon landings by the Apollo Astronauts.

I agree with you on the part of your comment "real spaceman". However I reject the part "hoax moon walk". As long as I live I won't acknowledge false facts. I breathe for Soviet philosophy but will not undermine the accomplishment the west has made in the field no matter how tyrannical their actions are with toppling other gov. and people for their own interest

gagaron was killed because he disagreed with how poorly built many of the Rockets were and his friends were getting killed
@bluenosedfish3839
@bluenosedfish3839 4 жыл бұрын
Gagaron's death was because of another plane passing by while breaking the sound barrier meters away from Gagaron's plane which led to an uncontrollable spin. The reason why both planes didn't see each other, were due to terrible weather conditions according to Alexei Leonov, who was part of the investigation commission during 2007. There were only 2 Soviet cosmonauts killed during Gagaron's lifetime. Valentin Bondarenko which died from a fire in a altitude testing chamber, and Vladimir Komarov which died from aparachute failure. None of which were related to rockets...
