The Golden Child is a 1986 American dark fantasy martial arts action comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie. The film stars Eddie Murphy as Chandler Jarrell, a Los Angeles social worker who is informed that he is "The Chosen One", and is destined to save "The Golden Child", a kidnapped Tibetan boy with mystical powers who is said to be the savior of all humankind. Alongside Murphy, the film's cast includes Charlotte Lewis and Charles Dance.
After a Tibetan boy, the mystical Golden Child (J.L. Reate), is kidnapped by the evil Sardo Numspa (Charles Dance), humankind's fate hangs in the balance. On the other side of the world in Los Angeles, the priestess Kee Nang (Charlotte Lewis) seeks the Chosen One, who will save the boy from death. When Nang sees social worker Chandler Jarrell (Eddie Murphy) on television discussing his ability to find missing children, she solicits his expertise, despite his skepticism over being "chosen."

FUN FACT:: J.L. Reate (pronounced Ree-A-Tay) is not a dude!! Jasmine Reate was cast as a boy in the film for a much more youthful look. FUN FACT: Charlotte Lewis is not of oriental descent.

My childhood classic ✊🏾, “I want the knife please” “I have stole from my brother numsey I should be purged,I should be punished” “ That’s the little MF that stole my hundred dollars” lol many quotables. Prime Eddie Murphy was on a role.

Not enough convo around the comedy in this film. That's what made this movie great, not the effects or the writing. Eddie's comedy was the star of the film. Miss you Tone! You bring balance to the conversation 😊

The Golden Child's power was that he held the World's sense of compassion in his heart. If he touched someone, he could bring out the compassion in them, and they would fight to protect him. If the Golden Child was killed, Earth would fill with only selfish people and humans would destroy themselves at a faster rate. Saudu needed the Ajanti Dagger because it was made of alien properties, it would be used to kill the child because he would not eat sullied food. Chandler was declared "The Chosen One" because of his tenacious drive to find, look after and find homes for "Lost" underprivileged children. It's safe to assume that Chandler was put in the system himself, it would explain his passion to not have children suffer the same fate, or at least recover fast from it. 33:19 The Oatmeal wasn't at the Bikers's lair. The Oatmeal was in a different bando Numpsi held her in, they most likely killed her and bled her out there (very dark). The Biker's were basically a bunch of peados, they had her hanging around with them doing god knows what and then sold her to Tommy Tong and Numpsi.

None of Eddie's initial films that made him a "Breakout star" was meant for him... Even Beverly Hills Cop. It was meant for Sylvester Stallone. He wasn't expected to do as good as he did in 48 hrs which was originally for Richard Pryor. The Golden Child and Best Defense were the first two films that didn't perform well at the theaters.

That was Best Defense the movie he had a small part in. It was a super small part. Beverly Hills Cop was Sylvester Stallone's movie at one point but they went in a different direction and Eddie got the movie. Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 great movies.

When it comes to the Golden Child, must take part willingly for it to work which is why They thought starving would work. They moved locations when investigations would get too close to messing up plans. The Bikers & those who ended up "deleted" during were willingly paid off to participate so to speak. Any more clarity I gotchu b/c this is a classic fav of Mine 🎬😤.

To respond to the "hot take" at the end. And he brought it up earlier in the review. The reason Eddie turned down the cheeks is because of the scene he asked her father for advice. The father told Eddie he has to be pure, and Eddie made sure he was talking about getting the cheeks. And when Kee was talking to her dad after that, she said "I ruined myself for him" meaning she gave him the cheeks (not being pure) already. That's why Eddie turned her down because he was listening to the Father and trying to be pure even tho he already got the cheeks. A sign he really loves her

Y'all forgetting that Beverly Hills Cop wasn't even a movie for Eddie Murphy. As I learned from when you guys reviewed it, that it was a movie for Sylvester Stallone. Eddie walked into a movie that was basically already shot and completed for another actor, that was a proven box office star. Eddie was an unknown in so far as movie Hollywood. The Golden Child would likely been his first staring role had Sly not quit on Beverly Hills Cop last minute.

If they did choose to do a remake I think they should make her a girl but lead everyone to believe she was a boy like this film as use it as a plot twist. Kee Nang backstory could be that she was a potential Golden Child but she was almost corrupted by Numspa, she was saved before the ritual was completed but enough damage was done that she could no longer be the chosen one. This would also explains the abilities she has.

I love this movie! I never understood the hate it gets? Eddie came with some truly funny improve moments here! The jumping the wall with family and gun kills me! The asian man speaking in another language with Eddie just pointing his finger at him. Eddie saying "Are they of this world? Or do we have to project there?" Prime Eddie and extremely underrated. Can you guys review "Hangin' with Homeboys" from 1991? Classic black flick or New York flick.

Your Eddie Murphy history is WAY off. His first movie was not the movie "in the tank", which is titled "Best Defense". His first movie was as a co-lead in "48 HRS". His sophomore film was "Trading Places". Both films were mega hits back to back while Eddie was still on SNL, and to cash in on his stardom, Paramount paid him tons to be featured in "Best Defense", which he ended up regretting because it wasn't a decent film. In the same year, 1984, his first headlining role as a solo draw was "Beverly Hills Cop". This is the movie that amplified his success in Hollywood, and made his status as a leading man official. THEN came "The Golden Child". All of these facts can be easily found online. Eddie fans know his first movie. Come on, brothas!!
