Hi Pete, I generally don't comment on youtube videos, as I want to be a silent viewer, but today's video is different. I was around 18 years old when I started watching your content on KZfaq and now I am 20, your videos have led to me doing a lot of things differently in my life, especially my view towards the world. You may think that not many young people are watching your videos, but every young person watching your video counts towards something good. Thank you for putting these videos, it gives us hope that not everyone is out there to see us fall.

My husband is 53yr old chemist and we have 2 acres with 6goats. I grew up on a 26cow Dairy farm with 20acres. He has always enjoyed farming of old school variety. We both look forward to watching your shows as others have said for the relaxed wholesome positive real live action farming view and the "dadjokes" and reflections are real and are also entertaining. We love when you interact with the animals, He enjoys the old tractor sections and when you talk about why you choose each one and why you are doing things when you are doing them. the cooking portion is new looks delicious and simple. Bonus! We enjoy when your family is a part of the daily "going ons" of daily farm life. In short it helps us to feel like we are part of farm life. Thank you VERY MUCH!

Based on your methods I got my cheap, used equipment and was able to bale enough to feed my cows and sell enough to return half my equipment cost in the first year. I plan to grow the farm and build a business model that works in my area. I love the mechanic videos. It’s part of farm life for those who don’t do debt.

So here's one demographic I bet you thought you'd never reach - I'm a 53 year old female medical transcriptionist living in Vancouver, Canada. I've never had the pleasure of meeting a cow or a horse or a chicken and I love your channel. I don't even remember now how I came across you, but I'm hooked. The closest thing to a farm that I've set foot on is the petting zoo. "How terrible!" you must be thinking. That very well may be, but it's because of you and only you that I now only buy organic from (relatively) local farmers. I now make a trip out into the "valley" once a month and stock up on meat grown and processed right on the farm. I also buy local milk, cheese, eggs, and veggies all because of you. Thank you for what you do and for taking the time to share it with all of us!

Retired aerospace engineer here. I'm not watching to learn how to start a farm - I'm just enjoying your channel because it provides a window into a world pretty much 180 degrees opposite my own life. It's fascinating to me to see what farm life is all about and you're a wonderful teacher for that. As I have a degree in mechanical engineering and have worked on cars and other things my whole life I also greatly enjoy your tractor content. Again, a window into a world of mechanical content that I previously knew nothing about. Personally I think your channel provides the perfect balance of animals, machinery and philosophy, and I hope you don't change it - It's perfect just the way it is.

I'm 37 and have been having a rough time with my mental health. After a long day of teaching 5th grade math, cooking, and cleaning my 7yo daughter hands me the remote and asks, "Wanna see if Pete made a video today?" I can exhale. You are a true light while I struggle with that dissonance of the dream of life at home farming and life at work. Thank you for continuing to encourage us all! For anyone who hasn't read your book, they should order it! I can't tell you how many times I stormed into the living room to read aloud excerpts to my husband- you are able to so clearly describe this tug of war of living two lives, one of which doesn't feel...natural. Feels so relieving knowing I'm not just a broken human and that there is the possibility of living a life true to my virtues. Thanks for sharing your life with the world and showing us we aren't alone.

I think this comment section is exactly Pete's point. There's a bunch of 40+ and 60+ year-olds commenting here (nothing wrong with it at all just to be clear but it supports his point that young people aren't really watching the channel) and he's pretty much preaching to the choir (which is why he talked about people either homesteading and the midwest). He's not really getting viewership from young people in areas just outside cities which is where small farms can succeed.

Hello, Pete! I'm 26, and have been watching your videos for half a year. For me, your videos have really brought out thoughts about stewardship and the relationship between farmers and animals. Hi Pete. I'm a 55 yr old dairy farmer in the heart of the dead food zone here in south central Illinois. I own 40 acres, rent another 40, and milk about 45 cows. My milk is sold to a conventional market. (Prairie Farms) I am surrounded by 1,000 acre farms(and bigger) in this corn and soybean heartland. You indeed are correct about the Goldilock zones. You are also correct in the fact that your channel is a product of your farm. I agree that there are lots of good things that are the results of homesteading, but I cringe at some of these folks who are losing money on everything they are doing on their homesteads except for the money they generate with their camera. The most popular ones speak at events and have rock star status and give expert advice on all these things that many times they have very minimal knowledge about.(And again, are providing food for themselves, but beyond that aren't financially feasible) . The fact that what you are doing on your farm is providing you mental, physical, AND financial rewards is what makes your channel great. You don't need drama like having your wife have a baby in the van at a gas station (You can't make this stuff up!) to have an informative and even entertaining video. Ok, so I don't know where you should go with your channel, but the fact that you are real folks doing real things is completely appealing and will never get old. One more note. Hillary cracks me up, but I'm also suspecting she keeps you grounded and is a big part of the success of your farm.

Thank you for sharing with us the value of a simpler life, and an easier and less stressful way to find purpose each day. Swimming in the pond, playing baseball between the chicken coup, bank barn and pig pen. A home run was when the hall went over the barn, and a foul ball was when it fell in the manure pile! Hello Hilarie & Peter. My husband, Roney, and I are retired here in Smithfield, RI. We have no farmers in our present family situation. In my husband's Italian family, they were famers in Italy and then some of them had smaller farms here in the US. It's always fun listening to those who remember the past. We've enjoyed following your channel. My husband loves when you work on your tractors, and I love seeing and hearing about your animals and watch how well you care for your farm. Love you speaking to us like you did today. Stay as you are and please know that we love and respect the life you've chosen. Be well and safe.🥰🐱🐮🐷🐓🥚

I'm 23 and before stumbling across your channel I held many of the closeminded and stereotypical views about farmers. I always knew it was some of the hardest work out there but I didn't appreciate all that went into operating a family farm. Your channel has completely changed how I see farming and has even got me to start visiting my local farmers market! I also wish less industrial, high quality farms were more feasible but I don't know how that would have to take place legislatively or culturally but I am doing my part to support my local farmers. Even if you don't change the world, Pete, you've made a huge impact on thousands of people.

Jon- and isn't that an effective way to change this world, being an honest example to so many? I love to watch one of your videos in the evening Pete- it reinforces my belief that there are good people in this world acting from integrity, and keeps me positive about our future. Hi Pete, I just wanted to reassure you that your initial goals for the channel are still there and more. Each week, you are giving inspiration on how to deal with the challenges of life. Whether it's on a farm, at a job, or home. You give viewers simple ways to think outside the box to solve problems or make things better in their lives by showing them how it worked for you on the farm. Your views are true and honest, not sugar-coated. You show the successes and the hard decisions and how you got there. I think you give people confidence to try new things and new ways of doing something by showing your experiences. Not everything you do on the channel will ever meet the needs of every viewer all the time, but each video contributes to the library of life lessons by Pete and Hillary and that's a pretty good read so far.......

Pete, you are connecting us to our past, reminding us of our grandparents farms, and the stories they told of "go-daddys" used to plow, and tenting beans, and all other kinds of farming tips. At 67 yrs young I was raised in the city, with grocery stores, and fast food, and restaurants. Only planted a few small gardens over the years. But watching your channel is a link that we are all going to need to go back to local farms for everything. This is not just a dream. You are helping to change us from a processed food, big business society back to100 yrs ago to quality food from local neighborhood farms from people that we know. We believe this is essential for the future of not only our country, but the world. Pls keep it up. You are making a difference.

Hi Pete, Thanks for the opportunity to comment on your show as I have been watching for a couple of years. I'm not a farmer, but a retired quality analyst that has worked in manufacturing and software development. I'm analytical, like you, and require data for all my decisions that I make about life, happiness, and success. What I have noticed about you from other "farming" channels is that you reflect actual life on the farm and the fact you depend on the farm to make a living. I learned more from you about farming, the conflicts that arise, and the problems you face and solve, and lessons in life as well. Your channel provides many different subjects and as a result, I am positive that your analytics denote your subscribers make up a diverse group of people that like to watch your channel. Topics such as restoration of tractors, explanation of equipment function, routines you follow to ensure the continuous stream of quality products are produced, are interesting not only young people hoping to get into farming, but also to me as a layman still learning about life, the role others play in society and community. I don't need analytics to tell me your subscriber base is just as diverse, or for the reason that I tune in. So, what next do you ask? One remarkably interesting adventure is your plan to breed quality feeder stock. Just as you accomplish on the Dexter's, you know what your market needs as you were faced with an unfulfilled need for quality feeders. I do expect tremendous success in this venture much as you have experienced with your skills in past endeavors. Pete, you already know that your family plays a huge role in your success. I really get a kick out of and sometimes laugh aloud on your discourse with Hillary. You don't let politics get in the way either, and I know over the last two years it's been tough; however, you roll with the punches and continue producing quality food. After three years, I'm sure KZfaq is a grind to continuously put out fresh content. This diverse content is what sets your channel apart from other channels. As I stated in a previous comment, I hope you continue to provide content if you are content in the KZfaq process. It's far from perfect but it has succeeded in accomplishing many of your goals for starting the channel, and picked up a few crazies like me on the way...

Hi Pete! My wife and I are both 27 and we're living in bustling Austin, Texas. To me your channel radiates positivity, hope, and acts as a much-needed reminder that if you're passionate about something then you can always make it work. Neither of us are city people.. but due to work and life circumstances we haven't been able to make our way into the farming life as soon as we've wanted. We both firmly believe that's where our hearts and minds want to be, and for 20 minutes or so a couple times a week your videos let us escape there before resuming the daily grind in town. The environmental aspects are extremely important to us as well, a mindset that has developed after so much exposure to seeing things done the wrong way (living in Austin and previously Atlanta all of our lives) and now, thanks to you, the right way. Sincerely, thank you for all that you do. It continues to impact us more than you know, and before long we'll be right there with you!

I'm a 20 year old construction foreman, and your videos have given me hope that one day I can turn my grandpas cattle and former commercial chicken farm into a successful occupation that will support my family without an off farm job. The mechanic videos are a key to any small farm like yours unless you just have boat loads of money, and they've given me the courage to try to tinker with my ford 8n and get it running as beautifully as your machines do. Your farm is going to be my model as my grandpa gets older and steps away from a lot of what he does now. Thankfully I am also in a similar goldilocks zone around the cities of Fayetteville, Arkansas home of the UofA, and Bentonville, the home of Walmart headquarters which both attracts a lot of the kind of people who is your market base. It’s due to your encouragement and wisdom shared that he gradually built up the knowledge and courage to make the move to a becoming a small business owner and we are now six months into his self-employment as a farmer. Pete I'm 64. Farmed and worked away all my life. Retired in March now just farming. My youngest son got me a Spotify subscription 3 or 4 years ago, what a blessing. I discovered podcasts and through them KZfaq. As a result of hearing and seeing new ideas, we have totally changed our operation from cow calf to stockers allowing me to run larger volume of marketable animals on our acreage. We have 180 acres 50 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA, which I now know is a Goldilocks Zone. :-) I've been selling freezer beef, half's, wholes and quarters. Just sent my first steer through an inspected processor. I don't know at this stage in our lives we want to try farmers market, but we do have other options. Our two boys are grown but help when they can. It's mainly my wife and me. (We heat with wood too) Not many folks farming around us. I enjoy having lunch and seeing what you and Hilary are up to. Enjoyed learning and watching your experiments with grazing and fly control last summer. We have several old tractors and enjoy repair videos. I had that valve body apart and put new pump in our CIH 885. I learned to drive on an H. I know it must be time consuming and a lot of work, but I hope you keep 'em coming.

Hi Pete and Hillary. My husband and I love to watch your videos and look forward to them coming out. We purchased our homestead June of 2019 and 6 months later the world went crazy. We planned a big garden but planned nothing more but to have flower gardens and Scott was going to work on restoring old cars after he renovated the old farm house. Well do to the world we have changed the directions and increased the veggie garden and added a fruit orchard. Scott likes to work with vintage equipment because you can do the work to maintain and keep them running. So he purchased a Farmall Super A and restored it. Well he now has more restored equipment and loves using them. We came across your channel when we decided to get into farm animals over a year ago. Scott wanted to know how to make hay on KZfaq and up came Just a Few acres. We have been watching ever since. We learned how to care for chickens and got chickens, ducks, geese and of course our beloved Shetland Sheep. We are graze farming all the animals and your videos have helped us so very much. We want to help people and with this crazy world people are going to be hungry so we will be able to feed them with what we do on this 4.5 acre homestead. We have been able to give to the local foodbank and to friends and family in need. By watching your videos you have encouraged us, taught us how to farm as we have much to learn. Pete you have helped Scott figure out ways to do things to make this place run smooth. So please know that you have helped so many people and keep up the good work. Keep sharing your farm, your family, your animals and restoring your old farm equipment as you are teaching so many of us. May the Lord richly bless you, your family and the animals that you care for. Blessings to you and yours.

I have stayed since I very first found you. It's inspiring. To me, for one, it was seeing someone change their life totally, mid-stream. Not maybe for increased wealth as alot might, but just for quality of life and personal fulfillment and ideals. It can be done. Not to mention, it keeps me really grounded, that altho we would like that personal zen as well, a reminder of how much hard work it was and is! :) Plus, I like your darn level-headed plain common sense thinking and opinions on life. I grew up in Western NY and gosh darn it I wish I knew ya but at least definitely wish i could hit you up at the market each week. Be well, I say don't change a thing imho :) I must admit tho, i don't often watch the mainly tractor videos, but perhaps I should. Sometimes there seems to be very non-tractor-related topics that come up. I'm one who would get aggravated and probably throw a part across the room if something wasn't working, it's a good lesson to just say "darn you, screw! why did you have to do that?!" LOL

Hi Pete, I am probably not your typical viewer. I am 65 years old (It seems so strange to say that out loud). I grew up in Columbia county NY where there were some small family farms. My family had a fruit farm where we grew apples, grapes, and plums. I watch you channel for a couple of reasons. I enjoy watching you work on the 'antique' tractors (they were not considered antique when I was young and used them on our farm). Fruit farms are hard in our area because a couple of bad weather seasons can put you out of business. This is what happened to our farm. In the mid 70's a lot of state regulations came into play regarding the use of pesticides on the trees. This added a 'licensing cost' to the farmers. That combined with the cost of the chemicals cut into the profits to the point that the farm was no longer commercially viable. I enjoy the animals too. I worked on a small farm when I was a teenager where we raised sheep, goats, cows (dexter), chickens, and horses. That farm was really a hobby for the owner and never intended to be commercially successful.

I think you resemble a great work ethic and determination for people! From your long methodical hours to make sure older equipment is running top notch so your not hundreds of thousands in debt to newer tractors, to your patience of studying your animals and doing cost analysis to see how they fall into your farms plans. Your making your dream work for you. No matter where the channel or your farm goes, Id see it as a win if its in line with your dream! Your like the father that many of us wish we had sir, patient, kind, funny, hard working and you love your wife dearly and it shows. As always, I enjoyed your video. Thank you and may God bless you and your family.

Pete, you help people regardless of whether they are [aspiring] farmers. I'm a programmer and love my job, but I'm watching 1-2 of your videos daily. Stress is gone. Fortunately you have many of them, should last for some time. Your positivity and insight, your animals, your tractors... I was crazy about tractors as a teenager.. Hear sound of diesel far away, and I was off to the fields. I'm 56, my career won't last forever, maybe farming will be my next step. Thank you, and please keep going...

I'm an almost retired nurse that lives in the country. We don't farm but have a few cows and mules. I like to hear/see you talk about and enjoy the small pleasures in life. The smell of a spring day. Watching animals enjoy their feed. Walking through a field and seeing what pops up. Good stuff, thanks for sharing your good stuff.
