This is by far the best school house technical but on point true instruction I've ever had on the game of golf. No one talks about these forces and I believe if we truly understand this force then early extension will cease to exist and all of us will play better. I will be working on this everyday throughout this Corona lockdown. Can't wait to get back to the course. Thanks Coach.

Too many golfers imagine pushing the handle towards the target, in order to get forward shaft lean. Exit LOW-LEFT instead. This is especially helpful if you're someone who struggles with blocks, or snap hooks. You'll feel like you're gonna hit a low fade, but the ball will fly straighter than ever.

OK Jonathan….. I’ve actually watched this instruction video multiple times over the last 6 weeks ! LOL! MY GRORGE I THINK I’ve GOT IT ! LOL! Thank you ! Now on 2 the range ! I’ve been trying 2 fully understand what is mean by both hand and foot pressure and the sequence in my swing 2 better take advantage of both ! Thanks again!

Jonathan, thank you for this video. You did a great job of explaining the forces of the club and how the shaft acts as a spring. It is useful for me to think about the fact that the CG of the club is trying to find the ground, and it is the golfer's job to control when that happens. You provide very clear instruction on that. Hi Jonathan, I love the analysis and downloaded your vision. It explains the learning process very well. I really love the game but I am sometimes discouraged because my swing changes do not last and, up and until now, do not have an explanation for it. This gives me a new start. Thanks Jonathan. I had this discovery a few weeks ago, that I needed to hold the club up with my right hand but press down with my left hand in the hitting area (maintaining the sharp angle of lag). Then to release it with incredible speed at the ball. First time in my life I could see lag in my swing on camera. Was able to hit my 8 iron nearly 195 yards, with almost no effort at all (you would think the ball went 50 yards based on my swing pace). As long as I maintain good width and rotation, I can scale this up with the longer clubs. I found it's just not possible to let the hands be passive as the club always wants to release early as you said at both points of the downswing (casting and early release points). Now I'm working on trying to get the hands around my body on the swing through, instead of pushing the hands forward down the target line. The whole just let the clubhead do the work is true as long as you know how to work the clubhead! Really appreciate the videos, especially because nobody talks about these sort of things.

Quite excellent! Thanks again. I can now understand better why I frequently struggle with early extension. Detailed notes to be done and then work on correct sequencing -particularly since cant get to the course etc at the moment!

Thanks Jonathan. This is a fantastic expose on the the forces we not only need to control but how we need to direct the force to optimise its effect on the golf ball. I think I now better understand what I need to feel my hands and arms doing and, importantly for me, why they need to do it. Before this video I knew merely that they needed to do it. Fantastic.

This video is great and the $.99 .pdf is even better. Thank you for your perspectives, insights, and your work. Your imagery (playing card bending corners) and descriptions (weightlessness) are really helpful and support a lot of my work that I do on my swing. I'm convinced and a multi-month believer in ground forces and how important they are to distance. I'm also convinced that my next hurdle is swing path, and your video and .pdf are helping me deal with that - especially the pushing and pulling of the extremities and how they move around and behind the body, not so much trying to sling out to right field with every thing. Thank you for your work. I would say your thoughts here on club forces are in line with another instructor, Mike Malaska, but you go into so much more detail than Mike. His approach might be good for beginners, but he doesn't add much for players wanting to understand more about what's happening. Thank you again.

Your videos get to the physics of what is occurring in the swing and that is something I need to understand because it describes the feel of what is happening. Other instructions say to repeat the drill but lack any idea of what the golfer should be feeling. Your videos are long but they have a wealth of information - so I need to watch them at least twice. Worth the time.

thank you for the video. I just noticed in a slo mo video of my swing that the shaft(stiff) was bending in a direction that seemed strange even though I made good contact. Your explanation helps me see I have some work to do to keep the shaft from bending towards the ground too early. You're the first to mention that in the golf swing here and I've looked at many many videos here as well as hogans book

This is pretty radical stuff. Watched thousands of golf videos and never heard anyone talk about pressing down on the club to keep it from casting. Would like to see this supported with some slo mo and pressure plates. Not sure I’m convinced yet, but definitely intrigued.

Johnathan, nice presentation. A lot of UK based coaches tend to use an excess of words in their videos to sound posh and sophisticated, (which wastes a lot of the viewer’s time) but you get right to the heart of the matter and focus on the subject with knowledge and authority. That’s a winning combination. Keep it up !

Just come off the golf course after using this technique and the difference is immense, really crisp contact with the ball. I would really highlight this move, I also look at all your other videos, as this is so important as it also helps in the movement of the hips.

Thanks! Good stuff! Seems like the swing is a trade off between applied force as shown, and centrifugal force with passive arms. Can’t have both at same time during swing. Important to choose.

Hi Johnathon I think this is 1 of your best video.My timing was affecting my strikes so tried your down and around then your not ball bound.The wood swing is better by being shorter and getting better pressure in and through the ball.

Great explanation. It might be useful to think of downswing rotation in two parts. Left pulls to club parallel, right turns through ball.

Great video and great explanations. Unfortunately, I am not fluent enough in english to understand 100% but I do believe I have understood the most important principles. I'm trying to get my swing started by turning my shoulders-hips straight back which bringing my hands down more inside but T do feel a drop in my arms & hands. Now I think I know what pressures my hands & arms should feel in that movement down. Am I on the right track? Anxious for the drills. Great job! Thanks for your patience & insight.

another gem sir! ...btw, your vid on pelvic tilt (apt & ppt) has piqued my interest ...first attempt at the range was sloppy but I can see it has merit ...I was hitting mostly pulls but the sound of impact off the clubface was impressive

The challenge and the mystery lies in the delay of senses received and actions delivered. As I understand it, this delay of nerve transmission, perception, and action is actually longer in time than the downswing to ball. And so "feelings" and intentions/actions are always behind the actual events. So realize that intentions timed at certain moments of feeling might feel "wrong" when in fact, they are correct because of the delay. I taught golf for 30 years, and I was constantly learning how to get students to what I called "phase shift" to get them ahead of the delays. My own opinion is that much of the problems with golfers are because they are under the impression they are perceiving, sending and acting in real time and don't understand the phase shift. You seem to be a very good teacher btw. Interesting video.

A remarkable discussion. I'm 75; I've been playing since I was ten. When I was playing well, in spite of a couple of 20 year layoffs, I felt a. that it took forever to go back and down again, and b. that impact was effortless. I didn't know vector forces from chopped liver. But I will retain this information and shag it away. I'm grateful for your clear (not pedagogic) explanation.

I never understood the downward pressure until I learned to bow the left wrist and face my right palm downward while maintaining pressure on the grip with my right index ( trigger ) finger at p-6. Of course one must be rotating the body in the proper sequence or the club head will be driven into the ground. Feelings are difficult to explain.

Well, its a shame you haven't got more views because I watch a lot of golf videos and this was simply one of the most insightful ever. Thank you for sharing. I try to incorporate your idea into my swing by visualizing standing in waist high water and using my hands to force a beachball under the water as I move through the hitting area. But instead of forcing it down the target line, your video shows I need to be moving my hands more dramatically left through the impact area. Based on my experience I would caution viewers against getting too "hands-focused"...the body "dog" still needs to wag the arms "tail". But golfers who have the right body motion who integrate the idea in this video should see a big benefit. Cheers!

Hi Jonathan, This is propably the best explanation I"ve ever seen of the way you coukd "use the force". Most golfers like me have their mind set on creating power with more force applied with the muscles. I have a suggestion. We should stop calling it the golf swing. Call it the golf whiplash instead. Load power into the club and release it. Handling that power like a judo fighter must be the key to stability and speed in the stroke.

At time 3:44 he starts talking about the "push-pull feeling" and seconds later said "the left hand pushing back, the right hand pushing forward"; obviously he meant that the left hand is PULLING back. Just to share one of the things I´ve found after several runs of this extremely interesting video. Thanks

I would just like to echo your comment as I couldn't have said it better. The commercial aspect driving academies lends themselves to "Clickbait", however the insights provided by Johnathan are fundamental & will always be a secure foundation of a repeatable easy swing (I think). This video was so good I watched it again. Its technically excellent, but it feels like your sort of talking to the 90% of students who are casters or early releasers. I'm a bit of a handle puller guilty of holding on. So the visualizations you demonstrate of stopping the hands and thinking about the axis in the center of the shaft nearing impact are very helpful to me. Kind of funny...when you said "this is where the release is taking place" you had my full attention, but then skipped by it like its automatic for everyone. Anyway, as you move forward with drills, etc., I hope you can help not only the casters, but also us handle pullers who hang on too tight to experience an effortless release. Thx.

Such courage! To tread where few golf instructors dare to tread. Oh yeah, we'll give you body movements, positions and even flight monitor data. But rarely is the interaction between the golfer and club and the forces generated ever discussed. I guess it's due to the complexity of subject or because we all have different feels and on a day to day basis. But if there was ever a "secret" to golf, this video has made it secret no more. It is the forces generated forward and back between the golfer and his club. Thank you. Would like to see more with emphases on, as the body is performing a move the force perceived is …..

I have been in search of how to not early extend for a few years now... rotation (along with your other exercise drills) , coupled with this knowledge is putting more of the puzzle together on how my body/hands can interact with the club to achieve “the position”. I’m definitely getting closer! Thanks again for sharing/posting videos.

This is my second detailed viewing Jonathan. How slowly and yet how quickly a year can pass in a pandemic! I don’t want to repeat myself -it happens of course as we get older-but as I was noting down almost all of your presentation, I realised this is really incredible material and I am so grateful to you for sharing it! What has struck me -somewhat belatedly!-is that no one iota of this information is discernible to a very average golfer such as myself, from watching or viewing the swing of either a pro or good golfer, unless you have some idea as to what to look for! Two questions if I may. Firstly, do you have a video of any specific detailed drills covering the points you made and secondly, what effect/results has incorporating the correct motions had on students who previously were not aware of essential hand/arm action? I know I am rather slow at times-although a year later seems a bit ridiculous!- but this is undoubtedly one of the most helpful videos I have viewed-ever!

Hi John, some people say that you need to keep arms raised when doing squat move until the hips are open to the target. I would like to know if this is an active or passive motion for the arms as they are supposed to maintain pressure to the shaft. Thank you for your great video!

Hello, excellent explaination on pressing the 1st preasure point. A side question: when i bow the left wrist, i feel lost that pressure. And to me in simple words: "down" is to speed up from the right side of the swing circle (from left heel to the right) before impact, and "around" on the left side of the swing circle is JUST to keep balance after the ball is gone. From where do you release maxpower? Left thigh? Thnks!

I find your analysis of the golf swing fascinating and helpful to understand this movement of forces in space....however my brain can understand these theories but getting my body to cooperate is a real challenge...I studied martial arts for many years

Continued and practiced kata which is a drill that is engrained in your body by a lifetime of practice to allow the body to instantly react to a violent situation...I use that practice to study and practice my golf swing and it helps...

Does the split hand grip help to create the feeling of the forces of the shaft and the left hand directing the handle behind you (left) as you turn through?

Theres alot of forces, working for and against, brilliant video...So here's my swing thoughts for my swing, (Not Yours, because we all have different body types, and react to our own body in different ways.)...1. Always stretch to the best of your ability, knowing on any given day, your muscles will not always be fined turn condition, which is why, flexibility may be more or less on any given day, so knowing this, you'll know what I'm thinking when I describe my swing....2. MY SWING, ..I call it..Along for the ride..My left hand pushes the club back, my shoulders start to rotate, both wrists start to hinge to the top of my swing, and my left shoulder is now under my chin, all along my right as rm just goes along for the ride back relaxed and natural, filling weight pressure on the inside of my right foot....NOTE: I only bring the club back as far as my body allows me too, I dont try and force or rotate more than my body tells me....Some days it's more some days less...3. My down swing...I start my lower hips 1st, then I allow my left arm to relax, and my right hand moves the club down, thru impact, where I fill my right/ wrist, rotate at bottom of arc, .....Note. the louder the swoosh the faster the club speed thru impact.....Note...Important note on the left arm with a question for you.....Which arm can you swing faster, the leading arm or trailing arm.....Its your leading arm...So letting my left arm relax as much as possible on the down swing, while releasing my forward motion, than my club, allows my left arm to build up energy and speed on the wat down, and thru impact and up.....4....Its my swing, and my instinct in my body on what it fills like for me, not yours....But using the basics of great instructions by great instructors, I've found my own swing thoughts, and movement that work for my body.....So when I run across at great video and instructor like this video, it gives positive feed back, on getting better or just sustaining what is already habits in my swing......Just let your subconscious get good habits, and routine, and let it fly......Leland

I havnt watched the video yet but i am going to add my pennyworth! Kids use their big muscles(unconsciously) to get a heavy golf club moving from an inert start, then they use them at the change of direction to get control of an even heavier golf club! due to forces they can then only apply acceleration to momentum when the club is parallel to the ground on the downswing.Men take the club away with their small muscles (hands/arms) then use their big muscles to hit at the ball with the clubhead!

I find my rounds are better when I’ve simplified my swing thoughts to just loading and unloading the clubhead, as you describe. Want more power? Just load and unload a little more forcefully. And stick the club head release, with arms fully extended. I like the orange whip and ge force clubs with the bendy shafts for this reason. The forces you describe become highly intuitive with these clubs, and the sensation becomes one of feeling the weight of the club head as your body whips it at just the right moment, shallowing it from the top into an outward centrifugal spiral, right through the ball. It’s really a thing of beauty!

Jonathan - would LOVE to see a video of you integrating the points of this video with your previous video " Learn how to use shear forces to turn your hips in a golf swing" which focused more on the role the lower body (which for me was a revelation).

Hi, you always explain the golf swing in details. from years of playing golf. I develop tennis elbows both hand and lower back pain. Not sure what did I do wrong and Im wondering I can get some great tips about how to prevent it and stop the injuries from happening. Many Thanks

Hi Ryan, the best thing you can do for your golf swing is prepare your body in advance. That means regular exercise, especially for your core muscles. Squats are very good for this but you should consult a health care professional for more advice. A good golf swing will make great demands on your body but nothing should hurt, if it does then unfortunately the problem was already there.
