FWIW: Your lament about wanting to build & stock a “Little Library” but not knowing how to get around the very understandable security concerns prompted the thought: Collaborate with a brick & mortar nonprofit (workspace? Mental health? branch library?) that has space for it and encourage your viewers to support the nonprofit when they go to check out the books. Maybe even create an ink stamp with which you can include the message inside the book? Public space allows you to refill it w/out sacrificing your home security. Just a thought. ❤️

Yeah, we don't have any in our village but a neighbouring village and one a bit further away has one. There's also a house, in a more remote location, that has a red phone box in their front garden. I works as some kind of wi-fi booster type setup for the village, or something along those lines.

Your book cull is called “weeding” by librarians. I’m currently weeding the fiction collection of the public library where I work. Time and patron use take their toll, and we need to make space for newer books. Since this hasn’t been done for decades, the weed involves thousands of books!

When I was a kid, I was watching an episode of "How It's Made," the one about toothbrushes, and I don't remember exactly what was said, but the narrator said something like, "This process is shockingly sterile. Because robots handle the toothbrushes and they are never touched by human hands, you won't find any bacteria on these." That made me chuckle because I had just finished watching the episode of Mythbusters where they showed that even brand new toothbrushes had some form of bacteria on them. Later on, I was watching a documentary about the hydrogen fuel cell car, and the narrator said, "Usually when people think of hydrogen, they think of this: *Shows footage of the Hindering* But it wasn't the hydrogen that caused it to burn like that. It was the lead oxide paste." I've never laughed so hard at a documentary before. "Ah-ha-ha! I think the Mythbusters would like a word with you!" That taught me to be sceptical. Even of documentaries.

For book people, combining your library with your partners' is an incredibly significant moment in a relationship. When I combined mine, we actually kept several "duplicates" because they were different editions or translation.
@Call-me-Al
@Call-me-Al Ай бұрын
Especially when you want to be able to mark in your copy, or lend it out, it's good to not eliminate duplicates. I used to abhor the thought to damage books in any way as a child, they had to keep looking brand new. But now that I'm "old" I want my copy to be more meaningfully and unmistakably mine.

My father was a professor. For the last 10 of his working years, he split his time between a major museum and the university where he taught. When it came time to consolidate back at the university house, he had accumulated nearly as many books at the satellite location as he had at home. He shipped home many boxes of books, and when they arrived there was no place yet to unbox them. As the moving van was being unloaded, the supervisor had to correct the workers who had started to put boxes in the center of the living room. He said when dealing with that volume of books, they needed to be placed along the walls, because if put in the center they could crack a floor joist.

I used to have around 40 linear feet of software and hobby books and around 50ft of movies and DVDs. I had to reduce the book collection when I moved. I still find myself looking for some of those old books. The movies were easier to consolidate. Doesn’t look at cool in binders but the collection is now in about 24inches of space. In my current office must of the self space has been replaced with all the electronics parts and tools from working on small projects. It was much more important to have access to the components than 20+ year old computer programming books for long forgotten technologies. (That is until you get the work assignment to help migrate an old application and you realized you got rid of your reference materials a few months prior.)

With my movie collection, I went through and decided there were some movies I was unlikely to watch again. I was quite harsh but also realistic with it, so it reduced quite a lot. This was way back when I started getting blu-rays and DVD's paid the price. I put them in large storage boxes (I don't care for movies in binders) and it was worth it, as in all these years I've only had to dig out one movie.

I love that you have magic books! I have maybe 3000 of them, plus magazines, and they’re a major contributor to my work as a maker in the magic field. I wrote one of my own too, as I feel it’s important to contribute back and help others grow. The value of a resource library can’t be overstated, it’s just so important.

A writer & maker here :) Love to hear Adam talk about the way he and his partner organize their books. My library is as much about reading and aesthetic as it is reference and gifting, too. I'm a fiction writer and essayist, so I don't have nearly the diversity of work Adam does (no billiards books here) but I have a decent amount of books about wildlife and nature, as well as books on craft, furniture building, and memoir. I've always resisted the trend to organize by color and instead go alphabetically by genre.

Regarding different trolleys for different crafts (e.g. soldering trolley / jewellery/ leather / resin / etc), I have one sewing trolly (because the machine is too heavy to bother swapping back and forth from shelf to trolley), and a general craft trolley. BUT I have storage draws that also fit in the trolleys, so I take the draws I want for a specific project and put them in the trolley to move to my workspace.

Here is Australia we call them street libraries, And it common for us to set them up on the nearest telegraph pole of the local primary/elementary schools. Its near to where it can help a lot and it gives the caretakers some privacy. High schools are also used and the content is usually weighted towards whatever is nearest.

Huh, the "baby fat" concept is really resonating with me right now in my current endeavor. I'm in the process of building my second case for my Eurorack modular synthesizer - incidentally learning a good deal about woodworking and overcoming my long-term fear of the table saw in the process - and the new case will have nearly four times as much room for synth modules as my first one. I _think_ that'll be enough room to keep me from running out if space any time soon, especially since I'm building most of these modules myself, but it really does take forethought to plan ahead for the things that you don't know you want to add yet. (The new case is essentially a box of ¼" plywood of assorted grades with three pairs of aluminum mounting rails across an open face, plus a power supply and distribution system inside; I'm intending to glue it together and brace the inside corners with 2×2s, fastened either with screws or dowels. The original case - which i made by installing rails and a power supply into a salvaged telephoto lens carrying case - will continue to exist, and I plan to eventually build a second, travel-optimized synthesizer into it once I have the modules to do so.)

On my neighborhood walk about there are a few home made libraries. A thought on how to get around the privacy issue: You could make one for the channel, then do a give away of some sort, share the pattern, and make the structure of a second one for yourself, then you could trim the final product of your own off camera. That way, there would be multiple similar structures out there, but they wouldn't immediately identify you. Maybe you could even partner with a local group for some event that would result in a few dozen being made.

I understand the security concerns about putting a library you make in front of your own house. How about partnering secretly with some other maker who also wants to make a library, then put your respective libraries in front of each other's houses--ideally in disparate parts of the country. Of course, the other maker couldn't do a video like you would like to do as that would defeat the purpose, but you could probably find a maker who is more into the process than the publicity.

i have an idea for how you might make a library of your books- you could possibly photoscan them and put them on a website! i'm not sure entirely how the legality of that works, but it would be a whole lot less upkeep. if you wanted to make a build out of it you could make a sort of diorama of a whimsical library and use that for photos on the website, or even a 3D space you could walk around in virtually? just some ideas! thanks for reminding me about the virtues of extra storage space!

Adam, I have a project for you that could point a spotlight on lost ancient technology. Predynastic Egyptian jars made from granite displaying precision akin to a 5 axis CNC machine.... I just fell down this rabbit hole. If you could recreate the precision without a cnc machine you would disprove the theory! If you can't, then you could be the first to do it with a CNC machine - and therefore the first one for thousands of years to make such an object.

I'm trying to read Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (at your recommendation), but it's struggling to grip me with its first few chapters. So far it feels like how I felt about Lord of the Rings, where someone is describing a journey in exhaustive detail, oftentimes describing things that I struggle to see how they're necessarily relevant to what the book is trying to say. I'm sure that's part of some of the theming of the book about taking trips on motorcycles vs in cars and taking backroads vs highways, but I kind of just want it to get on with it a bit?

8:05 For anonymity: You make thirteen little libraries-each slightly unique so they’re not all immediately identifiable as coming from the same shop and the same carpenter. Record video of the construction and maybe speak to making things at scale with variations/customizations. Give away twelve under a pseudonym. Keep your thirteenth a secret and keep it for yourself. Publish the video a while after all are installed. Lie and say how you wish you had one at your house but the bookstore owner next door complained that it clashed with their dinosaur statue and has got the HOA on their side.

I've seen in Little Free Library chat groups that the best way to ensure books won't be looted by opportunistic resellers is to fully blot out the barcode and/or ISBN number (or rip that piece off entirely, unfortunately), as well as mark the edges and interior of the book with a "Little Free Library" stamp so it appears in a more used condition than it may be. These steps make the book still readable, but less desirable for re-sale.
