This is one of the few shows that holds up and reinvents itself every season. It also holds up the whole way through and doesn't run longer than it should have.

"Didn't see it coming but it makes perfect sense." That's exactly why I think this has got to be my favorite twist ever. Not only was it a complete surprise, but it makes sense and re-defines everything we've seen up to this point. (In fact, I remember thinking that it made so much sense that I felt like kicking myself for not realizing it earlier. LOL.) So...where do we go from here??

One of my favorite things about ths if you go back and watch the first season again, its almost a brand new show, there is SO much foreshadowing, from small subtle moments with Michael and body language, to more blatant moments like him kicking a puppy into the sun. And other things said by characters.

I definitely want to rewatch s1 at some point to try and see all the foreshadowing.

For example, us NEVER seeing Michael without one of the four humans around until this episode. That was TOTALLY on purpose, so we saw him like they saw him.

Also, except for when Janet dies, Michael is never seen alone. That is because he wouldn't keep up the ruse if he was by himself. It's a very well done season.

@@Shelma32Reactions In one of the previous episodes, you were talking so emphatically about the "fake Eleanor" / "real Eleanor" thing. You said something to the effect of "They're both real! Neither of them is fake!" Hehehehe. I wanted to comment SO BADLY, but I stopped myself!

Ted Danson (Michael) and Kristen Bell (Eleanor) were the only cast who knew the true premise of the show from the start. There's actually a great video of the rest of the main cast being told shortly before filming this episode.

Ahhhh finally!!! And right in time for Christmas! I’ve been dying to say YOU ACTUALLY PREDICTED THIS IN ONE OF THE FIRST FEW EPISODES. I was actually gobsmacked when you predicted the neighbourhood was a sort of “experiment”. You definitely were picking up on some not so subtle hints that something is not quite right. Rewatch s1 again, and notice just how obvious and well crafted the “torture” is. How many times Michael purposely tries to antagonise and sew chaos between the 4 of them. My favourite demon!Michael moment is when Jason puts his hand on Michael’s chest to calm him, back when Tahani didn’t know about Jason. Just to piss off Tahani that her soul mate has better communication with everyone other than her. Also Michael putting down all of Tahani’s efforts when it comes to throwing parties. Seriously rewatch s1 with the knowledge that Michael is a devilishly good actor 😈 Also note that Janet’s outfit changes every time she gets rebooted. Gotta say, this show has one of the best “twist” finale moments of all time. Get ready, cos you’re not prepared for what’s to come. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Love, your fan from the land Down Under🇦🇺🫶

The genius of this show is that it throws so much at you, that you forget about suspicions it might be The Bad Place. In my own first viewing, I suspected it was The Bad Place in Episode 3. But yes, completely dismissed/forgot about that eventually.

@@Wiley_Coyote same!! Especially when you get into Tahani’s childhood trauma, you almost forget that something is a bit off, you’re kind of rooting for everything to work out for our characters. I think also the genius of introducing Mindy st Clare and the medium place right before the big reveal. Throw you off a bit more, make you question and doubt your suspicions.

Great reaction. Good point about the coffee. Love the twist (did not see it coming) and that all the clues were there. Michael did kick a dog into the sun. Michael's evil laugh is one of the all-time great evil laughs. And don't worry, season two is not just a copy of season one and the plot moves fast. Have a Happy Holiday/New Year!

9:43 The gag with the sliding clown panels is SO brilliantly funny. It's hilarious in itself as its own joke. But that's just level one. On top of just being a funny joke, it's also a call-back to a similar moment in the very first episode, when Chidi puts drunk Eleanor to bed: E: Goodnight. Ch: *sigh* Goodnight. *circus music!!!* On level three of the brilliance of the joke, it's a /one-upping/ of that previous joke. Every aspect is heightened. Episode 1: a rough start to the first day in heaven > a somber conversation about Eleanor's life > clown music! Episode 13: half an hour to choose which of your friends will be tortured for eternity > "This is truly the saddest day of my life." > clown music! But that's not all! It's amazing that at this point in episode 13, right before the big reveal, they call-back to this particular moment in episode 1, because that was arguably the first BIG hint that there's something fishy about the Good Place. The clown stuff wasn't caused by Eleanor being a mistake, it was MEANT to be here. And yet, Chidi's reaction to the clown door is "Well, THAT's terrifying." Boom. If that last part is just a happy accident, it's still awesome. But if the writers were deliberately calling-back to one of the first moments that calls the Good Place into question... I mean, it's just *Chef's kiss*

24:18 Yep. 😱 Welcome to the club. On why Chidi was there - part of the points they earn is not just for good deeds and intentions, but how much good is put out into the world. Chidi unintentionally put out a lot of misery to friends and family, probably cancelling many of his good points. 27:17 I would probably consider Shawn high management. The way he told Michael that retirement 'might' be on the table eludes to others higher than him. But he can also just be messing with Michael too. 😏 The clues were there all along. What helped fool me was Chidi and Tahani. Even though Chidi was very indecisive and Tahani was a huge name-dropper and could be condescending, I truly thought they were good people and deserved to be in The Good Place. And yes, Ted Danson really sold it as the good-hearted Architect that made some mistakes with his first neighborhood, that allowed Eleanor and Jason to enter his paradise. 38:02 I *almost* figured out the twist right before Eleanor made her announcement. When they showed the scene with Michael drawing up the plans for his neighborhood, and he was told to just do a good job, Michael wrote up a new plan that had The Good Place in quotes. That stood out to me - nagged at me - while I continued to watch the show. When Eleanor made her announcement, it clicked why that bugged me so much.

Yay! This was just the video I needed today. I think what I was most surprised about with this episode was that Michael gave up the goose so quickly. I expected him to deny it and for the question to hang over the show for awhile. But nope! I also love that you picked up on the coffee being weird - that's one of my favorite little details from this episode. Season 2 is going to be such a fun ride :)

There are so many little things throughout the first season that tell that they are in the bad place. Like the garbage, why would there be garbage in the Good Place? Having to wash dishes or do laundry. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in this episode is when Michael is looking over his plan, The Good Place is in quotes.

this plot twist is probably my favorite i've ever seen because it's SUCH a shock -- when i first watched it, in the second after eleanor said "this IS the bad place!" my first thought was, "aww, that's gonna hurt michael's feelings! he's been trying so hard but it's been such a mess that eleanor thinks it's the bad place anyway." and then ted danson started cackling, and i felt like an idiot haha. but that's what makes it so good!!! and the rest of the seasons are equally amazing, which is rare and wonderful

I love your point about how there are so many moments that the writers COULD have used as season finale moments, but restrained themselves. The same is true for the entire run of this show, and I've thought this exact same thought about seasons 2 through 4, but not so much about season 1. But you're totally right! Every moment you mentioned could have made a good cliffhanger season ending in a normal sitcom. I probably haven't thought about this in regards to season 1 because this twist is so big that in retrospect, it sort of dominates my memories of the whole season. (It's not a spoiler to say that they keep this pattern going right up to the end, right? There are no specific events spoiled or even hinted at by knowing this. I think it's safe...). I think this is really a testament to how awesome Michael Schur and all the writers are. There are so many great ideas packed into this show that they could have chosen to stretch out in order to justify more seasons. But they made the hard choice, over and over again, to keep their main focus on the STORY. It sets the Good Place apart from every other sitcom ever made, in my mind.

I think only "Mr Robot" presents a similarily strong "twist" at the end episode.. I LOVE watching reactors watching the first series simply because.. It reminds me of the same journey and.. Recognizing where they ACTUALLY are kind of foreshadowing things that ARE correct, but they don't understand quite how when or where it will come into play.. It just.. Works.. and THIS episode is the most fun to watch reactions on.. and.. This reactor literally turned the general reaction (mine as well when I first saw it) in to overdrive.. . There is a moment in time where the general thoughts and sensations just turn in to a constant repetition of.. "what?".. and.. after a while.. "What th F*".. It does take some time to re-adjust and.. reinterpret the entire f*g season.

lol one of the greatest series twists! Tahani always bugged me since day 1... nobody can name drop etc so often and be considered a good person. I just wrote it off as the writers not seeing those as negative traits, but nope. Never fear.. my big concern after this was it would be a typical show and the next season would just be a slight variant on the first season, but was once again surprised how this show keeps getting better and better. In many respects, this is where the show really kicks off. Enjoy! Guy in the pit... that would be Glenn lol
