How to break in work boots 101: > Wear them > They hurt > Keep wearing them > They no longer hurt > Broken in

The amount of people who buy thick leather boots but then are surprised when they are uncomfortable when they've barely walked a mile in them is baffling.

@@wyomarine6341As someone who likes OT Rebilacs (fairly standard Japanese running shoes), I can say that the African Rangers OOB feel very comfortable. They're a tad bit stiff before break-in, but I think the extra height and added sole might be working against the Razorback. Not sure why people who want more comfort are opting for a rugged mid-top work/hiking boot. ARs are the way to go for a sneaker-like leather low-top boot.

Don't worry bro, I'll leave you a 5 star review as soon as I get off work today. Jim greens are one of the best values in the boot market EDIT: Thought this comment could use some context as it could be read as me just saying I'll 5 star for no reason. I've had my razorbacks for over a year and wear them every other day at work. I swap between them and my thorogoods to not wear them out too fast. I just hiked mt mitchell in north carolina last weekend with the razorbacks and i couldnt ask for a better boot for wooded and rocky terrain. I mean it when i say they're one of if not THE BEST value in boots out there.

I am excited about that cap toe razorback, with what I think is a leather midsole. So far I haven't had any issues with the synthetic one you have been using, (I have a pair or razorbacks and African Rangers) but long term I'd expect the leather to be even more comfortable.

Said this before but love the openness of Jim Green as a brand. I also want to say how much I love the wide toe box of Jim Green boots. With so many other brands having uncomfortably tight boots, Jim Green's wide fit is so refreshing. Also, patiently waiting to get a pair of the boots 3:29 Gareth keeps teasing lol.

That new style would probably do really well as a work boot here in the US. Looks like something I or my dad would wear back when we did concrete work. Steel toe not necessary but reinforced toe preferred. On the subject or break in. I've been wearing my new African Rangers on my days off around the house. Was pleasantly surprised that the PU footbed is now included. It also feels like these are much more accepting of aftermarket inserts than my other boots. I don't care if the toe box looks wide, I only care about stopping my nails from getting ingrown due to my toes being squished.

That’s how I got mine. I ordered them from Amazon. Exited, and waiting for them to arrive. I was so thrilled when finally got here. I’ve worn nothing but Red Wing heritage boots (1907, 877, and 10875). My Razorbacks are a welcome addition. They are so comfortable, and easy to break in. I can’t wait to order the African Rangers. Thanks Jim Green for an awesome pair of boots.

Put on hiking socks, only use around house till comfortable. Wash with Saddle Soap, let dry for 24 hours. Get a good leather boot conditioner, let that sit for 24 hours. You spend a lot of time at home and all heritage style boots mold to your foot. After a week or so you won't need the thick socks.

This video is a great idea. I love to see that a brand is paying attention to its customers. I work on concrete 8-10 hours a day with usually 10+miles, and I won’t lie, wearing my Razorbacks has been quite tough. Very sore feet, very tough sole. Buuut, I’m now a couple days in and I can already feel that the comfort level is getting better. Very excited to see where these go and when I feel I’ve fairly broken them in, I will definitely add an Amazon review. So far, love the craftsmanship and the toughness of the boot. I am constantly kicking very heavy things to move them slightly, pulling things behind me which I’ve hit my heel with a cart that weighs ~1,000 lbs, walking through snow, bags of concrete spilling on me, dropping lumber and other things on my feet and these suckers just feel like they can take it all. So far, knowing that there would be a break in period, I’m very pleased with them and so excited to see how they work even further!

Some people simply dont understand that a boot...any boot..is not going to feel like a sneaker. If it does feel like a sneaker then it probably wont last very long for its intended use. Break in period is something that all quality footwear requires, 30 mins is about 29 days and 23 1/2 hours short of a break in period😂

The razorbacks fit me perfectly (after taking advantage of Amazon's free returns til i got the right pair). You were one of the only companies to make a 13.5 size. The only issue is the high heel causes my back to spasm if i wear them for more than a few miles. Because of this, i have a pair of your barefoot rangers on the way and cant wait to try them out! I hope you expand your barefoot line. That market needs someone with an honest, high quality, durable offerings like yourselves to reset the bar.

I remember a pair of leather cowboy boots I got. Put them on, I could have them on for like 10 minutes, after that my feet SCREAMED at me, like I've never had such pain from a pair of shoes/boots before. But I kept at it, and after a few weeks they were amongst the most comfortable pair of boots I've ever worn. Leather needs breaking in, endure the process and reap the rewards!

I just got my razorback steel toes. I am not disappointed at all. Especially the toe box. I put in an insole that I like. They are rubbing a bit of a blister on one of my feet, but I am happy about that. I have broken in enough boots to realize that the stiffer and more unforgiving they are out of the box means they won’t end up all stretched out with a worn out sole after several months. I will be buying Jim Green boots from now on.

I love them so much I just got a pair of the new all black African Ranger with wedge sole for my office job. They look super nice for office work and have all that toe room! It's just unfortunate that here in America, people don't understand boots as much. They don't understand different outsole for different purposes, they don't understand break in periods. Everyone just wears running shoes and thinks that's the pinnical of footwear. If it's not a squishy memory foam pad that dies out in 6 months, they want nothing to do with it.

I just started breaking in my second pair of African Rangers. Started feeling a little bit of friction on my heels (of course because I put them on out of the box and did my typical hike of 4 miles with 1000 feet of elevation gain). No big deal. Slapped a couple of pieces of duct tape on my heals and did the same hike the next day. My first pair broke in quickly and I’m sure these will too. Just love the brand and the boots.

Razorbacks are my go to beater boots. Got them a few years back and the break in was horrendous. Now that I’m past it, they’re pretty great. When I got them, they were only offered with the original lug sole and it is garbage. Traction is perfectly adequate, over all height of the sole is very nice. But there is no shock absorption and they’re still extremely hard underfoot. I will have them resoled at some point, but I love the boots as a whole too much to part with them to get the work done. Now that they’re offered with other sole option configurations, they are a no-brainer. Go forth with confidence. Cannot wait for some baobabs

Here is my review... 5* hands down the best value boot you can buy. Good quality leather and craftsmanship. Resolable, but good luck wearing through them! For most people these will need a break in period. The insole is removable giving a rare option for boots like these. Here is the negatives, when YOU look down they look clownish but your feet will thank you. Also you'll go broke buying every every boot model they offer.

I own 20 plus pairs of boots.....Nicks, White's, Red Wings, Thursdays and 4 pairs of Jim Greens (2 pair of Vellies, African Ranger and Razorback)....with that said, my JG's are great overall values......my vellies are great to kick around in.....the rangers are great to wear in rough conditions and my razorbacks offer great support, with soft ankle and vamp padding while hiking. My biggest gripe w all the JG's are the midsole s (fiberboard???) And insoles (thin, cheap leather?).....I think I speak for most Americans......we are willing to drop an additional $40 or so, on all models for a leather midsole and quality leather insoles IMO.

Hats off for making this video. All fair points as far as I’m concerned. I received my Barefoot African Rangers this week. Wish I would’ve gone maybe half a size down, but that’s a risk you sometimes take ordering online. The build quality looks very good. Love the fudge leather. Razorbacks, got em on sale I love em. Only part that feels cheap is the padded collar, it could use a firmer foam and a perhaps thicker leather around the collar. It feels thin and might wear. But its interesting the way it is stitched, its possible to actually stitch a new heel collar on if need be ever. But the one piece uppper is basically cut like a sneaker, and the added enforcement of the padded collar is what converts its to a boot. Its a very good design. Not quite sneaker, not quite boot, right in between...Very good design for a middle/heavy weight boot. The last is generous and allows toe splay...Clown shoe...yup...who cares its good for the foot, comfortable. Perhaps a leather heel counter would be nice, the thermoplastic/resin heel counter does soften up and is flexible but it doesn't quite have the same comfort as leather. The jim green black lugged sole is very hard rubber, very nice feels like it will wear greatly. Heel blisters are quite likely because the heel counter area is narrow and tight, somebody with bigger boney ankles is probably going to need a more custom EEE width. I find different socks affect heel blisters. However the last has a wide toebox with a narrower heel pocket area. This is going to work great for many people and not others. My only suggestion if possible, switch the lasting board to a flexible but durable rubber midsole...it would provide better water resistance and more shock absorption. I'd love to see the barefoot shoe done with a rubber midsole and forgo the multi layered construction, it makes more sense to have a fully flexible durable midsole. The laces aren't that durable but they can be changed. I removed the laces so I could condition the boot, it caught my fingernail and I tore the threads out rendering the laces worthless...Paracord or leather for me :) The stock insole is very perfectly cut to fit...there is a small heel pad, one can easily modify that by gluing a thicker piece of neoprene/foam to add more cushion. I will put the lasting board through its paces and see how it holds up. If they can be re-soled once for the 145$ a pair price point that would be fantastic. A slightly thicker rough out leather would probably be much appreciated for work boots.

I also found them to be a bit "hard" under foot so I changed the insoles, put band aids on the blisters and continued to wear them. It took about a month but the effort was more than worth it. That was about three years ago when you were just starting to sell in the U.S. and these boots have become my favorites. It seems most of the one-stars are buyers being mad at themselves for making a hasty assumption and not thinking it through, and they push the blame outward instead of facing that they didn't fully understand what they were buying. Just came across this vid, as I'm eagerly anticipating my Buffalo African Rangers. As a former FBA seller, I learned not to get too hung up on product reviews after a while, unless the negative review is extremely detailed and the consumer makes realistic points to validate their negative review. Amazon reviews are like Facebook comments sections, where the world is basically welcome to comment whatever they like, as long as they don't use vulgar language. Anyways, this being said, any chance you guys can bring a combat "Waxi" to market in the future? I was introduced to the design through KommandoStore and really like the design, but they all seem to be sold out. I think it would be a great product for you guys to bring a replica to the American market. Cheers, and keep up the great work!

Many people dont understand that their feet swell. I cant wear synthetic shoes for just that reason. It is a real problem fitting shoes without different sizes to try. I found out long ago that boots too big are better than boots that are too small. But the way of breaking in new shoes is apparently lost knowledge in America. Fill them with water (after the innersoles are removed) and wear them dry with thick wool socks. My first pair of Buffalo Rangers needed this treatment.

Love my Razorbacks. My favorite hiking and general outdoor messing 'round boots. I did add a Keen insole to make them a bit more comfortable and took the nice quality felt and leather insole they came with and put them in my loafers. The toe box shape is unique, and along with the body of the boot being made of a single giant of giant leather, is one of the things I like most about them. They've done the Ape Caves twice and been all over the PCT in all weather and held up great.

@@JimGreenFootwearOfficial I just received my Razerback boots, I normally wear 9.5 US in RedWings, Ariat's & Skechers. The 9.5 US Razerbacks seem a little larger, I can put my finger between my heel and the the boot heel. Will these tighten up after break in or should I return them for a Size 9 US. I'm using try before you buy and have 5 days to return/exchange.

I guess I'm just a Jim Green fanboy.....I love my Vellies and my Baobabs. Yes, the Baobab is a little rough the first bit while breaking in, but most of us get that just the process. Thanks for reminding me, I'll be wearing them to the office today! Keep doing what you're doing.

Another great video, and I am glad that you address these reviews. I’ve read many a reviews of many good products, and come to the conclusion that people do not understand the review process. Yes, the Razorback is a monster of a boot, I am proud to be a very long standing customers and currently have 2 pairs of them, one with lug soles, one with wedge sole. Break in usually takes 2-3 days, it is worth every moment of initial little bit discomfort; but the Razorback is second to none. All my staff members get a pair of Razorback Safety Boots on their first day.

I love every single one of my Jim Green Boots. You can’t beat the quality for the price. I have flat and wide feet, so out of the box they fit perfectly. I can’t wait for the new boot to come out.

You guys are awesome and I WANT that new boot haha. Will it be as narrow as the shoelie though? I like the look of the shoelie but it rubs on my pinky toe a bit and I have had to stretch it. I have 4 of your boots and counting!

Just bought a pair and they are stiff but still pretty comfortable new. I am sure they will only get better as I break them in. I will say I did replace the insoles from the very beginning which may be why I feel they are comfortable out of the box. They seem to be built like a tank so I am very pleased about this. I am done with Keen boots as Keen boots seem to have gone down in quality. If these last and stay comfortable Jim Green will have a new life long customer.

@@JimGreenFootwearOfficial 6 months in and they are awesome boots. I now own 3 pairs of Jim Greens. The Razorback, the Vellies, and recently a pair of Shoellies. I am extremely happy with all of them, so much so that I tell my friends about them. All of them feel a bit tight at first but after break in they are the most comfortable shoes/boots I have owned. I love my vellies the best so far. I put some lace locks on them and they are so easy to slip on and off, because of this they have become my main footwear. They show very little wear after 6 months of everyday use and are extremely comfortable. Keep doing what you're doing and you have a new lifelong customer. The African Rangers are next on my list.

From a 2 star reviewer: I bought a pair of stockmans, and threw them on to break them in on a nice dewy morning where I’d have to hike 3-400’ elevation and around 5 miles in all, fully expecting to be blistered and battered at the end of the morning chores. However before my first step I knew there would be a problem. The vamp was several mil from contact with the top of my foot, except for the toe box with was clamping down on my toes, which had only a mil or two before the end of my toes were touching the end of the toe box. Meanwhile the width was a full centimeter too wide the entire length of the boot. I can’t imagine what size could accommodate the length/ width problem (plus the oddly low and tough toe box.) They’re obviously well constructed, just not in the shape of human feet. I’m excited to see you’re coming out with thinner models but I’m honestly gunshy about your lasts.

I just ordered a pair on Amazon for the black friday deal. I am excited about getting a pair of old school boots as I walk about 70-80s miles a week and want something that will last me. I promise a fair review and appreciate you for doing videos like this. I first learned about the boots from Rose Anvil. Have a nice day.

GREAT VIDEO. I love it when a company is open and willing to address criticism. Several things I want to point out as I'm sitting here in my Fudge Stockmans with the honey sole after working on my feet all morning in them. When I first bought the Stockmans, I bought the wrong size. The return process was easy and FAST. There should be no excuse for anyone to have to deal with an ill-fitting boot, so for the people complaining about sizing and comfort, if you don't like them, return them, and try another size / model. That's not a reason for a poor review. The Fudge Stockmans with the honey sole were very easy to break in, I think it took maybe a week? Great boots, I love them. I've also got a pair of Baobab boots. When I wore them the first time, my feet hurt. The second wear there was a little pain. By the third wear, the pain was gone, but you could tell that they were going to need a fairly long break-in process. After about four months of wear, they are fantastically comfortable. As the "clown shoes" comment, the wide toe box is FANTASTIC for me, I've got wide feet, and a toe disfigurement from a fracture that healed improperly. I've received nothing but positive comments on the look of the Stockmans. The Baobab has a more almond shape toe, so if they don't like the "clown shoe" look, go to the Baobab. I look forward to the new offering - as a big fan of the honey sole on the Fudge Stockmans, I hope the new offering has a honey sole option as seems like the honey sole is a little softer than the normal black sole?

I absolutely LOVE my African Rangers. I have worn mine basically every day for the last month. I feel like I barely had to break them in although the insoles did completely come apart on me in that time. I just wish they were easier to get in Canada. I want a pair of Buffalo Skin African Rangers, but paying the shipping from the South African website is not an attractive offer. It makes them much less affordable.

I’ve had a pair of Razorbacks for over a year and I quite love them. My one gripe with my pair is that when I bought them they came with a material insole instead of a leather one. Not sure if your different batches came with different insoles. My African Ranger also came with a material insole.

As I said, your boots are on my top favorite boots. I would still give them 5 stars. Yes they are a bit uncomfortable but I personally found they are great for hiking or yard work but not so good for working on concrete or hard flat surfaces. Some time back I contacted you guys about the issue and who ever I talked to was supper nice and willing to fix the issue. That is another plus for me. The heel issue in those reviews, I had that but I have had that with other boots and I just add a heel pad, Heel pads are cheap ($1 to $10) and can be found anywhere. They do seem to be geared toward women's shoes as most of the pictures show them in high heels but they work for men's boots and that is what I use them for. I find the silicone ones work better as the fabric and foam ones make a mess inside the boots as they wear out. Also I do not find the toe to be an issue, I tell every one they are perfect width. I do not think they look like clown shoes. The width is just right for my foot.

I'd love to see a zero drop last with an eva layer to minimize the underfoot bumpiness of a lugged sole. This with a leather lining would be pretty pnw winterproof. Id love to be able to use these things in snowshoes and kickstep up snowy mountains.

As an owner of the tyre sole razorbacks, I can say that the boots are awesome. My ONLY complaint is that the heel is not quite as high as I prefer and the back of my foot rubs on the counter and hurts a lot unless i use moleskin. If it was just a touch higher, it would be perfect. Other than that, I absolutely love my boots and thank you for making such affordable and durable (and in my case very cool looking) boots. 9.99/10

I’ve been enjoying my Razorback boots with wedge sole. I keep them well cleaned and conditioned, but I do not baby them when in the field. They are a bit firm under heal when standing on hard surfaces but otherwise have been comfortable. My only critique is that there is white material between the upper and the midsole that really sticks out against the dark leather and midsole. I notice the Razorbacks in the video have the same thing. Is this part of the lasting board? If this could be addressed, I’d consider the boots perfect.

I am a big fan of JG. They are ‘honest boots’ and it takes some time to be comfortable with honesty. While the shape is a matter of personal preference and a made up subjective reality, there is no question about purity of the material and accuracy of the technique. I am a shoe designer myself and can vouch for these aspects. The only thing is the perfect size and sufficient break in period. In my case I went half a size up and added a softer insole to make it a perfect fit. You may try on the shoe before you buy it to be fully sure. Once you know your type the rest is smooth. JG shoes become very comfortable after a few kilometers. I assure you.

The sole in my vellies was extremely painful for the first two weeks. Particularly in the ball of foot area across the metatarsal bones. I doubled up the insoles and removed of them after the first week. They are now my most comfortable boot. Although I wish they were sold with the wedgesole instead of the hard rubber. They are my most worn shoe. Give em a chance to break in

I wish they all came in wedge I would prefer a thicker wedge sole on all the boots. I don’t like lined boots either save all the work and use thicker leather.

Great video! But I think i will need some advice , my Razorbacks came 3 days ago and i experienced a kind of unique issue but firstly i want to let be known that i got them half a size smaller from what i normally get sports shoes because of the wide toebox I feared my feet are gonna be slipping,(im a size 41.5 eu and i got them 41.) My left foot fits in like a glove a bit resistance when i spread the toes and blisters in the back but i understand this will be fixed after some wearing. The main issue is with the right , my foot was not fitting well i could feel the pinky toe and the other two being squished together and the top of the arch was being pressed hard , also in the right foot i felt the toes reaching the end of the boot and generally i have alot of trouble fitting my foot in the boot. Is this normall for the break in period or should i go half a size up? . I love how they look from the yellow frog logo to the wide toebox and the green laces they are a boot with character and i wish the best to this company.
