What happens in the brain during menopause? As it turns out, the brain gets remodeled, and even rewired, during that very specific time of life. And, while menopause often includes symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, and mood swings... you may be surprised to learn it’s not all bad! On this episode of Chasing Life, Dr. Sanjay Gupta learns from neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Mosconi that there are upsides to this biological phase natural to half the human population. Plus, ways female-identifying people can prepare for it, and a possible link between menopause and Alzheimer’s.

I am almost 60. As a professional university professor, this episode was disappointing. To say that there's a grandma brain that allows women to basically "remain useful" by offering guidance to the young was shocking. Would we ask if men's older brains allow the old man to continue to be useful? Nope, I think it's not even a show. When I retire, I don't "need" to be someone's wise grandma guide. I'm going to travel and enjoy some hard earned "me" time.

@lolab808 Well, I was on birth control pills for 34 years straight & active pills only every 21 days for 16 years & never had kids so her notions on this mean nothing in my world. And yes, are profoundly sexist.

Unfortunately I was thrown into surgical menopause at age 44. It was an utter nightmare as it happened directly after my hysterectomy. Fast forward 10 years later and I am still not the same. 😢

Yeah, allopatheic medicine/operations are used for population control and very much used against women. That's why a country of weak men sucks.

Plus the way that women have been treated by the medical system to date… Our pain is downplayed, our concerns are minimised. Our health issues have been “mansplained” for ever and ever.

I was unable to take hormone therapy as I had previous blood clots (pulmonary embolism) and suffered from hot flashes for 10 years from age 50 to 60. I was prescribed pregabalin at age 60, which has been shown to lessen hot flashes and now (thank goodness) I don't have these symptoms anymore.

This is an area that gets ignored so much by not only the medical community but also the general public. I am post menopause and had probably an easier transition than many women. However, the loss of estrogen in my body has been tuff. I am glad that Dr. Mosconi touches on it here. I never considered the mental impact of a loss of estrogen. But it makes perfect sense. Younger women should take note of what is ahead of them during menopause, and I think preparing is very important. I wish Dr Gupta would do more segments on this subject. Perhaps if we could educate the general public about menopause and aging in general, we could eliminate some of the terrible stigma society puts on us aging members.

I am also wondering if the cumulative moral injury insults during the reproductive life , or repeated traumas .also is changing the brain function amplifying the hormonal changes. I am glad there is some research happening, perhaps that will affect the level of gaslighting male doctors do . Currently medical care for women is abysmal

Bad thing? Well, it happens to all women as a part of the life cycle. But yes, menopause IS a bad thing. Menopause is NOT equivalent to puberty or pregnancy. Those two are "building up." Menpause is "going backwards."
